General YPN >> YPNCON
Posted by fsvara on 14:24:00 03-18-2002
Yes! This is the official brainstorming/planning/flaming/discussion thread about the YPN CON 2002.

What is the YPN CON 2002?

The YPNCON 2002 is a (potential) YPN conference, where YPN regulars, or less regulars will have the opportunity to meet in real life!
I think this is a good idea for the following reasons:
1) For the sake of doing it...
2) Because meeting in real life is so much better in IRC
3) (insert your favourite reason here)
As you can see, there are plenty of good reasons for doing a YPN CON.

When will the YPN CON be?

2002 would be best! Why? Because that means it's this year, and because it's a nice number (the next one of this kind will be 3003, and we can't wait for that...).
For practical reasons, a good time to do it would be summer, because everybody is on holiday then.

Where will the YPN CON be?

In Europe preferrably. Why? Because that's where its center of gravity lies, IMO (And because me, the writer of this document, lives there ). Most of the people in Japan will come to Europe in the summer, too.
Now, in what _country_ to do it? I suggest the Netherlands, (and JaZper, for that matter ) for various reasons. First of all, it's pretty centrally located, then, there are a lot of other.. er, very good reasons that speak for themselves

Soo, what do you think? Input is very much appreciated!
Posted by MoX on 14:41:00 03-18-2002
Hey, netherlands would be great, 'cause it's no distance from where I'm living.

But...

How many days will the Con be long?
Where do we live(or better: sleep) during the time of the Con?
What is the program? I mean, will we only meet and greet each other or will we do something funny/useful in that time(Another way to put this question: Do we take our Computers with us?)?
[addsig]
Posted by Govtcheez on 14:45:00 03-18-2002
What about us poor saps who want to meet all y'all but don't have the $1000+ for overseas plane tickets and stuff?
Posted by dxprog on 14:48:00 03-18-2002
He's got a point
Posted by MoX on 14:54:00 03-18-2002
Hmm...Neither do we have the money to come the US. I think most ppl in the ypn can reach Europe easier than the US, but that's just a speculation of mine.

Anyway, I think the has to come true [addsig]
Posted by Govtcheez on 15:05:00 03-18-2002
Yeah, I know that, but everyone knows that the US is better, so we should have it here

I know what you mean, and you're probably right - I more than likely wouldn't be able to get time off of work or school, even if I did have the cash to burn
Posted by fsvara on 19:23:00 03-18-2002
govtcheez: that's why i thought it would be good to do it during in the summer... and well, the netherlands are a lot cooler than the US

as for taking our computers... well, it would be cool if everybody had a labtop... but i'm pretty sure that's not the case. (i don't have one either).

Well, in the .nl we'd stay with JaZper, who already agreed! :)
i hope he has enough place, lol.

if doing it in europe, we could (Maybe!) have peter, moxx, fabs, jazper, me (i mean ME, not "me"), icebird, kagez and a lot of other regulars at the event.. well, if 75% of those can't come, we'll still be a few
Posted by Govtcheez on 19:41:00 03-18-2002
-->that's why i thought it would be good to do it during in the summer... and well, the netherlands are a lot cooler than the US

That wouldn't really make a difference for me - there's 2 weeks in June and 2 weeks in December when I'm not either at work or in school...

I'd be fine with it, but 6 months after that, I want one in the States - I'd be willing to put people up....

shit. what should ppl who has 250$ 16years and bad folks do? i mean id like to meet you all. but im kind of.... i mean none eould let me to spell_chk[netherlands]. even if it would be in lithuanian i would probable be not allowed
Posted by Peter on 21:23:00 03-18-2002
We should have some space with room for computers + power supply . If you can bring your computer, do so.

The Netherlands? Well, how big is JaZper's house? And I don't see why the other "obvious reasons", eg. weed, would be related to a YPN conference. If you wanna have that kind of fun, then do your private trip.

Nonama: well, if not else, you could communicate by paper? seriously, I don't think it'd be a very big problem..

In my opinion Germany would be a better choice. Then svara has to buy us everything we want. It's also more central on the YPN map. We all can sleep in a tent outside svara's house
Posted by KaGez on 07:07:00 03-19-2002
ok, I will go to germany in the summer vacation, but I will definitely not go to the netherlands. Reasons?
1) I don't have that much money
2) I don't have a laptop, and I know how boring it is to sit there when other are on the PC, and you can't do anything besides sitting there and try to get their attention, which is near to impossible
3) I have _no_ idea how to get from germany to the netherlands, and I also dunno how to reach what in the netherlands

enough reasons? If it is in germany, I'd love to join you guys, that is, if my schedules meet with that
[addsig]
Posted by robost86 on 08:42:00 03-19-2002
I guess this meeting will end up in 2 people visiting svara at different times
Posted by MoX on 08:50:00 03-19-2002
Hopefully not!!!

I'm okay with us meeting in germany, though I live nearer to every town in the netherlands than to some german cities. Especially Freiburg where svara lives AFAIK is a much longer way for me. But I was there recently and it's a cool town with small 'rivers' running through the streets.

Well, germany or netherlands - I'll be there!

Posted by fsvara on 11:47:00 03-19-2002
actually, the netherlands thing was meant more like a joke, but heh, as JaZper said he could host us ;P

kagez: as for the price, you can get from germany to almost everywhere in europe by train... there are special prices that make it pretty cheap (as in: not very expensive)...
Posted by nonama on 11:52:00 03-19-2002
gernamy. it looks much more realistic

i might get there. and what abiout lithuania?
Posted by Peter on 14:26:00 03-19-2002
Oh, forgot to add that the place has to have a good connection.

Germany sounds good to me.
Posted by Govtcheez on 14:31:00 03-19-2002
The US. You people will cater to my needs.
Posted by kpyro on 19:01:00 03-19-2002
I agree...US...
Posted by Peter on 19:17:00 03-19-2002
As 100% of the admins wouldn't be able to go to USA, that seems to be an impossibility.
Posted by Govtcheez on 19:32:00 03-19-2002
No. You will cater to my needs, or you will not cater at all.
Posted by Govtcheez on 19:57:00 03-19-2002
If my demands are not met, I will boycott YPNCON 2002.
Posted by MoX on 20:24:00 03-19-2002
Too bad! I guess the YPNCON is doomed then!

[addsig]
Posted by Govtcheez on 20:32:00 03-19-2002
That's right! Who's going to yell random swear words and make random bodily noises if I'm not there!
Posted by kpyro on 23:48:00 03-19-2002
I don't think that it will be possible for everybody to go to one place. Maybe there could be one in the US and one in Europe... Just a thought.
Posted by -KEN- on 01:21:00 03-20-2002
::gasps::

Govt! ::smacks govt around a bit:: You can't do YPNCON before "One Fine Day" or "Flashdadee-Fest"! [addsig]
Posted by Peter on 07:30:00 03-20-2002
Well, if the US citizens who can't afford coming to Europe organizes a meeting, it's just great. But none of the admins can come, or at least I can't, I don't think the others could.

it's not a bad idea.
Posted by KaGez on 12:13:00 03-20-2002
at least I can't go to the US!
[addsig]
Posted by Govtcheez on 13:31:00 03-20-2002
-KEN-: I can and will, if there's one I can go to... At least everyone here's talking about actually doing it.

Kagez: Why's it such a big deal for you to come to the US from Japan, but Europe's easy? Aren't they about the same distance?
Posted by fsvara on 14:15:00 03-20-2002
fabs and kagez have relatives in germany (and fabs is moving there anyway), that's why.

btw, that's that stuff KEN was talking about?
Posted by Govtcheez on 14:36:00 03-20-2002
--> that's that stuff KEN was talking about?

I'm gonna take a guess and answer it like you said "what's that stuff..."

One Fine Day is the same sorta deal as YPNCON, except for cprogramming.com - doubleanti thought up the name, and it stuck nicely...

Flashdaddee Fest is, again, the same deal as YPNCON, but for flashdaddee... Ken just made up the name now, AFAIK... Not a bad one
Posted by robost86 on 15:22:00 03-20-2002
Yes it is.
Posted by kpyro on 18:46:00 03-20-2002
I don't think that it really matters if there is an admin at both meetings....
Posted by nonama on 18:57:00 03-20-2002
germany. i think it is the best idea for europian guys. i mean. its not far from every country. its not expensive. what else? oh... everyone likes germany. but what will usa, india and australia ppl do?
Posted by kpyro on 18:58:00 03-20-2002
All the US, Australlia and others not living in europe can come to the US
Posted by Govtcheez on 20:21:00 03-20-2002
Listen - it's obvious no one's gonna come if I'm not there, and if it's not in the US, I can't go, so let's just make this easy and put it in Michigan.
Posted by kpyro on 23:49:00 03-20-2002
Michigan...I used to live in MI...How about somewhere more centrally located in the US...Kansas,Missouri? [addsig]
Posted by Govtcheez on 13:41:00 03-21-2002
Nope, only MI.

Where'd you live in MI?
Posted by dxprog on 14:10:00 03-21-2002
How about Oklahoma
Posted by Govtcheez on 14:17:00 03-21-2002
What the hell is there in Oklahoma besides dirt? (and a good basketball team)
Posted by kpyro on 18:42:00 03-21-2002
Petoskey, Cheboygan, Good Hart and Mullet Lake (Places I lived in MI) [addsig]
Posted by Govtcheez on 18:44:00 03-21-2002
Cool - I've lived in Big Rapids, Sault Ste. Marie, Flint, and various places around Lansing...
Posted by kpyro on 18:45:00 03-21-2002
Sault St. Marie isn't near Lansing.

Right, and neither are BR or Flint... I'm just saying where I've lived...

You want the easy version?
Born in Big Rapids
Moved to Charlotte when I was like 1 (Charlotte's 20 miles sw of Lansing)
Lived in several houses around Charlotte
Moved to Lansing till I was 7
Moved to the Soo until I was 10
Have lived in Grand Ledge (10 miles w of Lansing) since then... I go to school in Flint half the year, and that's why I listed it...
Posted by kpyro on 02:26:00 03-22-2002
Great. I lived in Cheboygan from about 4 - 7 and then in Petoskey from about 7 - 10. Then in North Carolina for about 3 years and then here in a living hell, Montana. [addsig]

Posted by kpyro on 20:41:00 03-23-2002
Are there any females in YPN?

No, I'm not a pervert I was just wondering because my friend is part of this one programming community and they have no girls. [addsig]
Posted by Peter on 20:45:00 03-23-2002

I'd say Germany too .

So what is up now with the YPNCON???

Summer is coming soon(already warm and green outside)...So maybe we start making decisions... [addsig]
Posted by Error404 on 00:55:00 04-05-2002
Well, I live in the US and my mom thinks it would be a good opportunity for me so I can probably go!! Plus this will be my first time out of the US and always looked forward to it. I hope this all works out. [addsig]
Posted by kpyro on 01:03:00 04-05-2002
My idea still stands. We should have a YPNCON in the US and in Europe. That way more people could come. It would be alot less for us in the US to go somewhere here then across seas. Then those that don't want to or can't fly don't have to. It looks like US is winning anyway. [addsig]

I could jsut get a tube ticket and leave you guys to fly over
Posted by MoX on 06:41:00 04-05-2002
I think I'll prefer the european YPNCON, because it's not that expensive, closér to me and the YPR is there... [addsig]
Posted by sacah on 09:50:00 04-05-2002
Ok, god to be of YPN, decide and say, YPNCON is running here at this date etc, those that can will get there, those that cant will not.

Or we could sit here saying where it shouldbe for 15years till were all old enough/rich enough to fly somewhere
(-:
Posted by MoX on 10:54:00 04-05-2002
Right, as I said, we need decisions. Rather than saying "We could it make in this or that county" we should find out where we could really do it. I mean, who can offer room for all of us? Has anybody from the YPR arranged something? [addsig]
Posted by MooKeen on 01:56:00 06-22-2002
You people are crazy if you think this might actually work. I don't know parents who would let their kid fly to another part of the world to meet people they've never met. I have enough money for about... two days in Germany, but my parents would never let me. [addsig]
Posted by MoX on 03:51:00 06-22-2002
Maybe your parents don't let you go...

But what about the many guys from europe? Why shouldn't we meet?

And btw, there are some people in here old enough to travel on their own... [addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 04:02:00 06-22-2002
well, i don't have anything swpecial planned.. but i'll meet fabs probbaly.. that doesn't really count as ypncon tho
yeah, mookeen, ypncon is for people in europe mainly i don't believe a lot of people would fly from america or asia or whatever to europe just for ypncon
Posted by dxprog on 08:43:00 06-22-2002
Do we really need to meet each other? [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 22:54:00 06-22-2002
then let's just meet all in japan!
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 01:08:00 06-23-2002
dxprog: No, we surely don't need to. But some of us have become friends in here and would therefor like to meet in real life.

I'm one of those who'd like to [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 02:01:00 06-23-2002
I've made friends too, and it would be nice to meet them. But is it worth paying thousands of dollars to see them? I kind of like it this way. It's hard to explain why though. So don't ask. [addsig]
Posted by sacah on 13:23:00 06-23-2002
Why?

Im not asking about whats hard to explain, but about the very fact that it is hard to explain.
(-:

We shall meet someday.
May the AMD be with you.
Posted by MoX on 02:24:00 06-24-2002
We shall meet. And if the meeting will take place in europe I'll only have to pay some hundred euro (and that would already be quite expensive).

So, as far as I know KaGez and Fabs are coming to germany this year, right? Do you come at the same time and could there be a meeting with some guys from around? I think it would be fun! [addsig]
