There may be a reason for this, but theres no Windows thread, in General Computers theres a Linux one, but what about a Windows one, for all the ppl who love Windows??
Just a suggestion
thanks

Most people here know Windows well enough.
Linux is still some kind of a special area, and a lot of stuff is harder to figure out, while Windows problems are a lot less common. So if you have a Windows problem, I'd suggest you to post it in the General Computers section.
I don't think that a Windows forum would be any active. correct me if I'm wrong.

peter: agree - what would you say about windows? in linux there is so much to explore, but trying to do really creative stuff with windows is like punching a whole in a 20m concrete wall...
Posted by sacah on 07:23:00 02-24-2002
You would post same things that you post in the Linux section, just related to Windows, but Windows is still very much unexplored, Ppl look and see its not open source, and say it lollipops, and you cant be creative. Trace the reg, do some disassembling, and you have to be bloody creative, Explore till the cows come home, Windows has far more to explore than Linux, plus there are a lot of programs, addons(so to speak), shells that could be discussed in the Windows section.
To modify Windows you cant just learn a silly mid level language like C and change stuff, you have to learn ASM, and link stuff together, I find the hardness more fun, which leads to being more creative, I think you ppl just stop at thinking of Windows as a stupid User OS, its very much a programmers OS, in my thinking more so than Linux.
I am verytired at time of writin, but Im pretty sure I meant everything I typed.

windows a programmer's os? heh... yeah, it takes some low level stuff to look into it, but that doesn't make it a programmer's os. it was deisgned from the ground up for normal users, and newer versions _always_ get (better?) new interface to make stuff even "easier" - see windows xp.

Peter: you have less problems with windows?! I dunno how it is to you, but I _never_ had a properly running windows... at leats you can't call that "proper" for that price ....

Windows is so instable here.
I'm so happy if it works for lets say, 5 hours.

Giday, I slept well, and have just looked at my previous post, It seems very hostile, Sorry, I still think there should be a Windows thread, but no I dont know how many ppl here explore Windows, most just hear ppl sayin that you need Linux to learn anything. Thats wrong, I mem when I was younger I was like Windows lollipops, Linux is what you should be using, But now I actually spent a whileon Windows, looking around, Im likeing it more each day. When I get a second computer I will install Linux, (If I can find and Aus Distro (-: ) , but Windows is very stable, Its mainly poor code on 3rd parties behalf that crashes and causes problems with Windows, the same thing can be done on Linux, except that most programming done on Linux is currently by intelegent programmers, who know whats going on behind their code, not using a point and click system, like a lot of Windows programmers. I ran for 3 days on net and everything fine, then I got bored and wanted my Visual Studio installed, and you need to restart for the MSDN libaries to work )-: You just need to get the right programs and Windows is very stable, but yes I must say, Windows does vary from computer to computer.
You were lookin for a new poll idea, mabye have a poll askin if there should be a Windows section in the forums, and if ppl would actually use it etc. Something along those lines would help you make a better decision based on not just your (probably) bias minds, but what the users on YPN think.

BRAVO SACAH!!!!! WINDOWS ROCKS!!!
Posted by IbYdI on 11:43:00 02-25-2002
ill just agree with sahac.
im a win user from 3.0 versions and i still enjoy it. (still i dont like windows xp since is too user frendly, but win xp offers you the best hardware support ever... im having it on my laptop and im able to connect everything onto it, and it works instantly...)
anyway bout window crashing. win on my machine runs for days without restarting, and it doesn't crash.
but it really chrashes often when you use/install lot of shit programms that are never done by shit programmers who cant destroy a variable, so they stuck your memory...
but for example in 1998 ive had so much great time exploring windows api functions with various spy's...
all in all i like win. and i agree with sahac completely.

about win being stable: "win" isn't stable. Some versions are, yes, but win9x is _crap_crap_crap_ when it comes to stability.
The best uptime i've ever seen on a win9x box was like a day, on win nt4 half a year is no problem.
Posted by Govtcheez on 13:56:00 02-25-2002
You can't compare Win 9x with any flavor of *nix for stability. NT/2K/XP are much better comparisons...
Anyways, I'd like to see a windows board, as I'm starting to get into Win32 programming.
Oh yeah, and my ME system would run just fine for as long as I had it on...

I use Windows 98se, As I stated earlier it stayed up for 3 days easy, while I was using it normally, and I dont just use my computer, it gets abused, and it stayed up 3 days easy before I restarted to complete my instilation, but I have seen a few computers where 98/Me would not last 5 min, But not many, and the problem is the user in most cases.

yap, it's all in the user...
"windows is like a woman.
you need to know how to play it."

Oh, that's the trick. But Windows is even more complicated to satisfy than a woman! And that's a lot! I could run Win98 for days as long as I don't run any programs, but if I want to be able to use it the way I want, it will most likely freeze after half a day.
Posted by IbYdI on 12:45:00 02-26-2002
let me be honest,
i restart win every 3-4 days.
and these programs are always on:
1.kaspersky antivirus
2.zone alarm
3.rMirc
4.winamp
5.musicmatch jukebox
6.windows commander
these programs i use few times a day
1.B's recorder gold
2.corel photopaint 10
3.rebirth 2.01
4.magix music maker 2000
5.reloop 2
6.sweet little piano
7.jeskola buzz
+ many others that i dont use all the time.
And with all of these programms (for example i use all the music programms at the same time mostly) my sistem almost never crashes.
explain it?
like i said, you need to know how to play a woman

Heh, I might be blind, but I don't see Internet Explorer anywhere on your list... If you use that and it only crashes every third day (when using the computer a lot) you must have some supernatural power.
I think there are exceptions. But as they say: exceptions prove the rule .
Posted by IbYdI on 20:36:00 02-26-2002
well, if you disable java virtual machine
iexplorer works just fine
*and i use it everytime im searching for something on the internet* sometimes more that 5 instances ....

Peter your just unlucky with computers, I use 98se doing all my work, running lotsa programs in BG etc, 5 Ie's open at once, 3d renderin in the bg, and my computer runs fine. Or mabye you just been knockin Windows for so long with ur linux buddies that you have forgotten the truth, and just remember the exagerated lies about Windows.
When I was with the police, we had a dude that durin summer could turn the Macs on and off by just touchin the keyboard, he would build up that much static elec, that was cool, but he had heaps of probs trin to type up a crime report or something.

Well, sacah, that's you. Everyone I know, including non-linux fans, agree that Windows 98 and ME are instable. There are exceptions and strange cases but that seems to be the most common thing.
I use 98 a couple of hours a day at most, nowadays, and in average, it hangs once a day. Not a big deal. But it does make me frustrated.

hehe, i have frends with lot of problems with windows, all computers in school also hang a lot.
i mean its all in the user, but still i dont see me using any magic to keep windows stable, it just is stable , well configured...

Posted by Govtcheez on 14:29:00 02-27-2002
I've never had any problems that weren't self-inflicted on my ME box...
Posted by sacah on 08:27:00 02-28-2002
I think I have said it before, but i could not go for 5 min without Me crashing, but I have had a very stable, 98se, but yes at school, they were poorly set up, and they would crash oftern, but my coz and freinds say Me is more stable than 98 for them, it just depends on what the gremlins in ur computer fell like that day i guess.
But anyway, off the stability of Windows, and back on purpose of this thread, I would like at least a poll askin if ppl want a Windows section in the Forums, Also just so ppl know, I dont hate *nix, and when I get a second computer it will have Linux on it, but I will always love Windows. And I must say that I think Linux will end up same as Windows, except not as good, so we will have to look for the next underdog OS to switch to
