I thought it would be interesting to have this topic. I personally have mandrake 8.1, but today I'm installing Debian.
So, what linux distros do you guys have and why did you pick that distro over the others?

I'm running Debian SID here, too. It rocks Maybe not the best thing for the Linux beginner, but for anybody with some Linux expirience, it's just great
The only prob with it I see is that Debian is often pretty slow to get new software even into unstable (SID is the "codename" for Debian's unstable branch).
I guess I'll try gentoo soon, with that you can really be on the cutting edge. The only thing I'm sorta scared of is the time it takes to compile everything (AFAIK gentoo's package management actually manages the sources only, and compiles everything itself).
I mean, compiling something big like GNOME or KDE would take really long...l
Whatever, I'll install Gentoo anyway once my current SID installation gets wrecked... Tho my current installation is the best wokring one I've ever used... Been stable for a really long time, never had problems

I would like to help you, too, but I'm doing only Web programming for more than a month now. So I'd prefer my next project to be some "real" programming again.

I am going to be working ona a game here pretty soon. It's an AOE type game except it takes place out in space. I'm going to start on it as soon as I cream my little brother's butt in a media player contest.

Yep. He's using his drag-and-drop thing and I'm using VB. We're going to see whose is better.

Posted by MoX on 15:03:00 07-09-2002
Let me guess...both lollipop? And isn't that drag'n'drop thing called VB?
Don't take me serious, but from my point of view drag'n'drop stuff, VB and HTML are about same level
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 23:42:00 07-09-2002
Excuse, I didn't word that right. He does drag-and-drop programming. There is no code involved at all. That's the difference.

Hehe...
Don't mind it. Your bro will come to his senses later. There'll be a time when he decides to do real programming or no programming at all.

Posted by dxprog on 03:25:00 07-11-2002
He'll probobly choose the latter. He can't even get into BASIC programming.

Posted by MoX on 15:23:00 07-11-2002
Well, give him some time!
I don't know how old he is, but he may change his ways, later on.

Well, I'm on Gentoo since saturday now and it's really cool.. I suggest you try it.. it's a bit of work and takes some time to get a fully working desktop but it's fun and works nicely

new distro in here
Now I'm a proud and happy user of gentoo! Built everything from scratch, so it's hell fast, and everything is as I like it
and, best is, I can rely on the pkg system, without fearing broken pkgs everyday, like in debian.... that's the main reason I switched... debian's pkgs (espacially apache and php) broke every few weeks...

I _have_ Mandrake 8.1 and Debian 2.2 R7.
I use Debian (now installing )

debian 2.2? that's a really old one you've found there
2.4 is the latest stable debian (called woody)

I am using Red Hat 7.3, and i like it. However i am going to try another linux distro, as soon as i get my hands on the CD's. Unfortunately i do not have access to a CD R/W .

if you're experienced with linux already, you should try gentoo
it's not too easy to handle, but it works great once installed
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 18:38:00 09-03-2002
I guess the same applies to SourceMage. But I think Gentoo is a bit more stable because SMGL is still very experimental. But, if you got the experience it is a hell lot of fun!
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 20:27:00 09-04-2002
yeah, as far as I've seen SourceMage and gentoo are quite simmilar. Only the package management system and directory structure seems to be different. The rest is quite the same I think
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 07:56:00 09-05-2002
heh, kagez, but that's actually almost the only things that differentiate most distros except for the stuff that the "consumer" distros add to make it nice of course...
Posted by KaGez on 17:38:00 09-05-2002
yeah, but for example RH is also not that different from gentoo, but it lollipops like hell
And, source mage does not lollipop like hell afaik
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 18:13:00 09-05-2002
SourceMage's dircetory structure is quite similar to RedHat's. That's why it's so easy to install sorcery, SourceMage's package manager, on a RH machine.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 19:12:00 09-05-2002
I still don't like RH tho
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 01:16:00 09-07-2002
Well, RedHat is okay, you can install and pull up a RH server/firewall/router in a matter of one hour and a few minutes. Okay, I guess the same applies to almost every binary distro out there. What I consider RH's greates weakness is the pain of keeping it up2date.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 11:12:00 09-07-2002
and I think that that is one of the most important thing in a linux distribution There are so many changes everyday, if you don't update at least once a week, you're left behind
[addsig]
Posted by ItinitI on 12:25:00 09-12-2002
I used to use Slackware 8.0, but now use Red Hat 7, but I'm thinking of trying TurboLinux 7.0, or a BSD. But this Gentoo is starting to sound interesting.
Main reason I want to switch from RH7 is for a newer kernel, and maybe a little bit more do-it-yourself than RH is.
Any pros/cons with TurboLinux, NetBSD, or FreeBSD?
Posted by MoX on 16:11:00 09-12-2002
You can simply compile your own kernel on a RedHat system, too

Posted by KaGez on 17:32:00 09-12-2002
mox:
that still doesn't chage the fact that you can have a bigger degree of DIY in other linux distros
but, _if_ you wanna switch to gentoo, I would advise you to wait another month, because there should be a new gentoo (1.4) around in the next few weeks. 1.4 beta is out already, but it's still using gcc3.1, and afaik they wanna switch that to gcc3.2. Already usable tho

I'm using a heavily modified installation of Slackware 9.0 at the moment.
Posted by eosp on 12:30:00 09-23-2003
I use RedHat 6.0 because it's what came with a book on linux I have. Oh the RPM lollipops worse than M$! I can't load anything with it.
Vim rocks, so KaGez is right about something at least. Emacs is worthless, sorry if anyone is insulted.
Compiling nasm by source code!

Why does it "suck"? It's easy to use and you can get packet dependencies from http://rpmfind.net
