People say this HDD lollipops. Why? The specifications is as good as any drive's, only that it's fairly cheap and can store a lot of stuff (80gb for $240). I want to buy some extra storage... Maybe if i get money for it.

Anybody knows something about this?

i think the problem with HD's is not the storage or rpm, but the quality, their length of life.

I am very happy with my 30gig IBM hd, but i heard very bad stuff about the ibm 70 gig ones.

i heard that the best 80-100GB drives are the MAXTOR ones... heard they have a great speed and a very good lifetime and durability

crap ... the fastest and also best rated HDDs are the Quantum Fireballs atm.
and, btw, I use a WDC too (20GB one), and it's very silent, and fast too. Nothing to say against WDC ...

I once had a WD 3-gig hard drive that died after 2 1/2 years. An old, old, old Seagate 408-meg hard drive lasted over seven years of daily intense usage.

I used that WDC HDD for 3 years, and now it happily runs in my GF's comp, still as fast and silent as in the beginning. The benchmark results also haven't changed since the time I tested it first, and that was when I bought the thingy.
I think you shouldn't judge hardware by old models of it. most companies that failed with something before just renew the whole factory and start from 0 again. I think you all know that story about Creative's GF2s. For those who don't know:
Creative's GF2s had major problems, like hardware conflicts. They also fried their own core if you used them for a too long time at once.
But, after this, the new generation of Creative's GF series (GF3 series), are almost the best out there. Almost all shops that have some 3d demos running on their PCs use Creative's GF3 series for the graphics part. Creative just renewed _all_ their factory inventory, and started from 0. I dunno if WD also did the same thing, but I'm pretty sure they did, because WDC HDDs you buy these days are often very good, in lifetime, as well as in performance and silence.

Hm, never heard of GF2 problems. I use a GTS and it's running nicely yet..

some time ago there was a GF3 test in the linux magazine, and they came the conclusion that the linux drivers from nvidia were very unstable.. perhaps it has improved, do you ahve any info about that?
Posted by KaGez on 13:54:00 01-23-2002
I think I've read something about this on ZDnet some weeks ago. Nvidia has improved those linux drivers _very_ much, which you can also feel if you play Tuxracer @ 1280x1024 with a GF2. Dunno how it is with GF3s, but since they use the same driver I think it's the same. And, nvidia also wants the ppls on linux to be satisfied... they don't wanna loose any customers, and _many_ of them (for example game developers (those in a company)) seem to use Linux... dunno why they don't bring out Linux games tho :/

what does our docot say about this?

doctor: "Uhm, yeah, this boy is under a heavy imaginatio-loss, which can't be healed. Anyways, he should lay in bed the whole day, so that he doesn't loose _all_ of his friends, if he has any left"

Hey. I have a, don't laugh, 425MB WDC that's around 10 years old and I has three bad clusters. Now my, again don't laugh, 512MB seagate is on the fritz and that has to be newer than the WDC. WDCs are great. Thank you very much. [addsig]

hhe.... my very first HDD was only 100MB big... it rocked! you could even install M$-DOS with some games and maybe even a graphical menu for starting programs!
I never had problems with HDDs, only with one, a fireball.... I plugged it, powered on my PC, and all I saw was flames ... that lollipoped... so far for my HDD and my CPU... both got fried

I am using a 8 gig Maxtor, and a 6gig Quantum Fireball 3.5 series.

I have an old Western Digital Caviar drive sitting right here, 12100, it is 2gig. I also have a 1.5gig spare Quantum Fireball. I wish these were bigger drives, oh well though.

What I would give to have a gig or more of space. Be happy with what you have, because there is someone who is worse off. :'(
