Coding contests >> Visual Basic Game Programming Contest
Posted by dxprog on 18:52:00 01-29-2002
This contest is to see who can make the best game in Visual Basic. You can use Windows API, DirectX or anything else that works for you. Games will be judged by type (RPG, Platform, etc.), by speed, by graphics, by ease of play, and by storyboard (if any). Good luck and may the force be with you.

my first Q corresponds to Peter's, so I shouldn't mention it again.
my 2nd Q is, until when do ppls that take part in this have to submit their things? Coding a whole game is pretty tough, even if you have some months (I'm talking about easy to play and good at once games). I don't know how that is in VB, but it shouldn't differ _that_ much from when you code it in C/C++.
So maybe also give a deadline.
3rd Q is, are ppls also allowed to use OpenGL? imo OpenGL is much more powerful, and also a lot faster, so it would be a good choice too, especially for game programming. I'm not gonna take part in this because I am running linux only, and am not willing to install Windows anymore for a long time. These Qs are just to make some things more clear to those who want to participate.

my personal opinnion (and i like vb) is that coding a good game in vb is much harder than learning c++ + opengl + coding the game + doing graphics. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 13:28:00 01-30-2002
indeed, learning isn't hard... you can lear most things easily. but making a good game in C/C++ also isn't easy. btw, why do you post that? you wanna make me angry or something?
anyways, just as also mentioned above, those are not Qs that will help me further. I've posted them so that ppls don't post them afterwards, and these were pretty unclear.

/me just wanted to say that vb is not optimized for that sort of thing, so optimazing your game would be harder than all of above mentioned.
Posted by Peter on 22:14:00 01-30-2002
it greately depends on what kind of a game it is. and what hardware you want it to run on. my KillMac game (point-and-shoot) was quite simple and didn't even need optimization . I don't think it'd get a high ranking if I still had it at all..

hehe, is that something like that Moorhuhn thingy? thet was a big hype some time ago never liked it much tho :/

Note to all: I guess in my hurry to get into things I overlooked several important aspects. Sorry for that. Also I didn't realize that a large percentage of you are linux users. So I am canceling the contest, but I do want to thank you all for pointing out my mistakes.

Posted by Peter on 19:43:00 01-31-2002
no problems.. you don't have to cancel it at all, just make some things clearer .
Posted by dxprog on 20:03:00 01-31-2002
Thanks Peter. The name of the game is RPG. Use whatever you want language C++, VB, QBasic. You can use whatever API you want (OpenGL, DirectX, Windows API). There will be a winner for each language. Games will be judged by graphics, storyboard, and ease of game play (controls, menus, etc.). If there are any more questions feel free to ask.
Posted by dxprog on 20:08:00 01-31-2002
Oh yeah. Deadline is July 1st. If anyone needs more time feel free to say so.
Posted by KaGez on 02:08:00 02-01-2002
dxprog:
Thx for replying on that post
I'll not take part in this this time, even if I'd _hell_ like to join you guys with this I've still never programmed a game, only a little incomplete tetris with SDL.
I'll think of it again, and if I can get something done till June 1st I'll submit it for sure! =D
Every have fun coding games! "It's serious bussiness!", you can really earn much money with good games these days

I might try to join the contest later on, right now I'm quite busy and I lollipop quite much anyway . I could try an ASCII mode RPG ....

I'd recommend us all to collect a list of portable compilers/intepreters. There are few UNIX-specific languages/tools, but lots of Windows-specific ones (Microsoft wants monopoly, they _shouldn't_ care about portability). There are more portable alternatives to for example QB. Making a contest for only Windows users is - in a way - discriminating. You also prepare yourself to switch from Windows (it's a fact - almost all serious programmers use another OS).
Posted by KaGez on 13:21:00 02-01-2002
if you ask me, if you're serious about programming, want to stay legal and keep the costs low, then one of the *nix variants should be best (no matter if it is FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBD, Minix, Linux or whatever). Mos of them are free, and much more stable and bring everythign with them acoder needs

Posted by robost86 on 14:17:00 02-01-2002
Minix and OpenBSD maybe aren't known as coders OSs really But sure, they're better than windows.
Posted by fsvara on 14:37:00 02-01-2002
OpenBSD is known as a very secure server os imho
Posted by dxprog on 15:10:00 02-01-2002
Question - where do you get one of these OSs? The only languages I really know are QB and VB. I don't know enough C to put in your eye. I might buy Mandrake Linux for myself.
Posted by robost86 on 16:51:00 02-01-2002
Don't

linux and vb is useless combinatio

Posted by robost86 on 16:52:00 02-01-2002
btw, svara, I've got that impression too.
Posted by robost86 on 16:54:00 02-01-2002
Also, the only languages I really knew a few months after starting with programming was QB. But I moved on, and I never had to regret that
Posted by moondude on 17:58:00 02-01-2002
oh kagez i cant only program js so see that i'll program a game too. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 02:28:00 02-02-2002
moondue: you won't get it done anyways, so better don't start ...

dxprog: if you want to install linux, you should first see at the table of distributions out there p http://www.linux.com . They've got a quite complete table, also with descriptions for each distro.

please don't get me wrong but:
i just wanted to say that i live in Yugoslavia and here you dont pay for the programm, you pay for the CD. Any CD costs 2euro (game, programm, anything).
But Anything except linux, or any legal programm. (you cant buy that here)
shame on Yugoslavia. after all we live in 21century.

Is it possible to do a dual-boot with windows? Or can I alter my config.sys file to selct between the OSs?
Posted by KaGez on 12:51:00 02-02-2002
dxprog: Linux comes with one of the best bootloader around, called Lilo. You can have a GUI for it if you want, and you can boot almost every OS with it that is out there. So you could trash your config.sys, and install Lilo (most distros do that automatically).

Posted by dxprog on 13:19:00 02-02-2002
That's good. But from what I've seen you need floppies. My floppy controller was killed. Is there another way without buying a CD?
Posted by IbYdI on 13:32:00 02-02-2002
theres a programm called System Commander, that is used when you have hd with different partitions and oses.
i dont know where it can be found on the net,
but i can send it to you if you want.
Posted by KaGez on 14:43:00 02-02-2002
dxprog: you can DL the ISO-Images of for example the Mandrake Linux CDs, for free, and then just burn them to a CD. Or, you can DL all the files, put them on your HDD and install linux from that partition. Another way would be to use the debian installer (it's for debian only tho). You Download the installer (80MB), then start it from M$ DOS, and then all files you want to be installed will be installed from the net

so, you don't really _need_ a floppy drive

Posted by dxprog on 16:57:00 02-02-2002
Kind of a big download. I might be able to copy over the kernel from a bootable Linux utility CD I have. I really don't have that kind of space on my PC either.
Posted by Peter on 23:12:00 02-02-2002
or you could use some lighter distro (Vector Linux is 80mb I think..). I know it's still quite big but if you have an ftp prog that supports resuming you could download it anyway..

where do you live btw? some ypn member could send you a distro.
Posted by KaGez on 00:43:00 02-03-2002
or maybe hand it to you directly :~)

Posted by dxprog on 02:20:00 02-03-2002
The thing is that I have about 250MB in total free hdd space (all of the used being put to good use I might add ). I am in the US.
Posted by Enhance on 07:34:00 02-03-2002
lol don't worry dxprog there are some windows users here, by some I mean me

lol j/k, this contest should be interesting, I'll prolly be participating
Posted by KaGez on 08:05:00 02-03-2002
dxprog: 250MB only? could get tight after installing X and GNOME/KDE ... is repartitioning impossible?
[addsig]
Posted by Peter on 17:58:00 02-03-2002
I use Fluxbox rather than Gnome/KDE
Posted by dxprog on 21:33:00 02-03-2002
No way to repartition my drives. One is for Windows and windows utilities and the other has VB, VC++ and my projects. I think I'll stick with Windows. It's my native code.
Posted by dxprog on 21:35:00 02-03-2002
Enhance: What language you using?
Posted by sacah on 08:50:00 02-05-2002
Windows rocks this world
unless you talkin bout versions after 98se
(-:
So with this comp, you can use any language???
/me a little confused.
Posted by dxprog on 22:44:00 02-05-2002
How do you achieve DOS video mode 13h in C++?
Posted by kpyro on 00:48:00 02-06-2002
I am getting into Visual Basic, I actually am making a game right now. But I had one question: How good does it have to be? I mean if mine isn't that good will you like criticize it??
Posted by dxprog on 02:36:00 02-06-2002
kpyro: I will not criticize "bad" games. All the games I have made are pretty pathetic. So don't worry. Stick with it.
Posted by KaGez on 09:01:00 02-06-2002
kpyro: since most of us are fair we won't say stuff like "this sux" or seomthing, but there are in fact some asses out there (who are also members of the YPN), who do such things.

Ok, I will admit Im an ass, but you must fear my 4 total posts, and my l33t batch coding skills
(-:
Some ppl are game programmers, others are just programmers. You coding skill cannot be judged on your game programming, so dont worry, were all understanding.

sacah: lol =)
Posted by Darioush on 20:52:00 08-20-2002
This started out as a cool post, ended in a dumb one so, i have to say that i'm relly sorry for it.... but hey, EVERY1 read the first post again
Posted by sacah on 18:12:00 08-21-2002
Yes, I would have to agree, a rightiously sweet mate called sacah agreein with a dude just below snoopy on the sweet with a capital 3 scale is a pretty dumb ending to a thread.

Geez, I though this thread went by the waside. According to later posts this contest ended last month. [addsig]
