I am going to start using UNiX until I get Linux. What is UNIX in comparison to Linux? Are they anything alike? Please give me some info on Linux and UNIX because I have never used them... thanx

linux is just a unix-workalike... there are houndreds of unix clones, "workalikes", etc. out there... most of those still in use today are used for special applications like servers and mainframes... for an introduction to the world of unices, you might want to take a look at open-,net-,freebsd, linux, solaris etc...

Which is the best developing environment?

Linux, *BSD, Solaris is what I'd say here now. They bring everything you need for C/C++ and Perl development afaik.

I think Linux is the best of these, because it's the most common and it is used by most ppl in here! [addsig]

yeah, the answer'd be like "the one you can get most help with", and that's definitely linux. second would prolly be a BSD.

I haven't tried any BSD, but of the OS I've tried (DOS, Windows, Minix, Linux), Linux is definitly the best!

BSD and Solaris aren't bad, but to work quickly and efficient linux (especially debian if you've got some experience ) is far the best

solaris is mainly used on servers and corporate environments... it's afaik one of the last commercial unices that is still (regularily) used on the desktop, especially for applications like CAD or CAE.

dunno about that... today you can do far more CAD and stuff with linux and other UNIX variants... I didn't deny it!
