Linux >> umm, some help needed....
Posted by Sebi on 06:42:00 06-05-2001
well i just put mandrake linux 8.0 on my system, but when it came to configure it, i had a small problem with my internet configuration. it asked for a dsn1 and dsn2. well i didn't know those, but the help icon on the bottom told me that that was ok... linux would just find that out. but then it asked for a net driver, and for 1. i didn't know what EXACTLY it ment, and 2. i thought it ment what like ADSL modem i have, and i searched the list and i couldn't find mine on there... so i got a problem... how do I do this? I mean, linux would lollipop if I couldn't connect to the internet....

well, I've never installed a dsl-modem before but I figure there's a generic driver. Maybe, that's not as fast, but it'll work... however, I can hardly imagine that your device isn't listed. Are you sure?

Sebi , NEVER search for the model names in a Hardware DB ... in most cases you have to specify the Chipset on the card (in the modem) and then it worx ... I also got the same prob with my Eth card , but after I figured out what chipsed it used , it worked perfectly =) Try to go to the HP or the maker of your modem (or whatever you are looking for) and look what chipset it uses , and which drivers it needs for Linux .
One more thing ... doesn't your ADSL line work with dhcp ?? check that out too .. I can hardly imagine that it doesn't . Anyways , that's all I can help you with for now

hehe, these servers are DNS not DSN.
(it stands for desoxyribonukleinsaeure).

Eh, not really, it actually stands for 'Domain name service', and you ahve to put the IP adresses of your ISP's dns servers there. These adresses must be listed somewheer in your ISP's documentation.

As for the dsl connection, I have no idea. I have set one up, but in SuSE, and not by choosing it from some menu, but by compiling rp-pppoe myself, and writing start and kill scripts... That's not exactly what the newbie wants to do =)

what does pppoe and the 2 other ones stand for anyway? i'm searching the web for drivers right now, but i think that linux doesn't support my USB modem... well, i still hope it does, but....

you need to get a module for it...

Ask on LNO, tell them what your dsl modem is called.

rp-pppoe is just a userspace daemon for ppp over ethernet (the protocoal needed for dsl). Start and kill scripts are just there to make sure it gets started on bootup and killed on shutdown.

It is a **Bit** more advanced that the autoexec.bat in dos, tho.
Look in /sbin/init.d, /etc/rcX.d for start and kill scripts. the start scripts are called something like 'S20xxx' and the kill ones 'K20xxx' (the numbers can differ).

well, if pppoe means over ethernet, then it won't work for me, cuz i have a dsl modem, that goes over USB, and i don't use a ethernet card... but... i found out that there are no linux drivers yet for my modem, however, there will be beta tests for the drivers this summer,... imma go and see that i get signed up, i don't care if its beta, i want DRIVERS!!!!! ahh!!! and then i decided that i will use my dial up account in linux until i got the drivers, or until i call my ISP company and tell them i need a dsl modem with an ethernet card, and they tell me that they'd be glad to gimme one in exchange, since they are overstock with the ethernet modems... but, NOOOOOO, i configure my dial up account, and try to go online... nothing.... so i go to harddrake, and what do i see? my dsl USB modem, AND my PCI modem are BOTH on the OTHER DEVICES LIST!!! AHH! well, and since i am new to linux, i don't know if there is any way to get them OFF the other devices list and into the normal list... well, see, i mean, it has to be a good sign to somewhat, at least linux detected both devices... well, later guys...

lemme say one thing :
HardDrake only sux ... the DataBase of HardDrake is totaly oldered , so also if the kernel supports your Modems , Harddrake won't recorgnize it , cuz it isn't in the database . but with common ( AND older) hardware HardDrake worx ok ....

well, i contacted BOTH manufacturers, the one for the dial up modem told me to call dell and get the drivers from them, and dell told me to call the other manufacturer, cuz they ain't got no drivers... damn, now i'm screwed... and the USB modem drivers were in Beta stage, and when i asked for them, they told me a guy would call me back the next day... i'm still waiting....
