I deleted the "Another opinion" post as it is no code or tutorial. We got this messageboard for a purpose.

M, everytime I meet someone who calls him/herself a hacker, I am at first very careful with the what I talk to him/her about. Because the word "hacker" has so many different meanings in so many different places, it's impossible to know what a person means, when he/she says that he/she is a hacker.
What I am totally and fully against is people who break into machines and scandisk them up, just because they have a temptation. I can understand certain temptations and we have all been there. There's hardly anyone who can say, he/she has never cracked around on the school-server or some similar machine. It's when you're not really good yet but just a tick better than others you wish to show-off what you can do.
Then eventually, you get over that, usually this happens when the gap between you and other people gets bigger. I'm talking about the knowldege-gap of course.
I think most young programmers have experienced something similar or are experiencing it now.
But I'm not defending crackers. Breaking into computers and scandisking them up is making life harder for others and since life is already hard, I think crackers are stupid. But I'm not the boolean-type. Crackers are not all bad because like I said above, I think cracking is simply a black-phase most programmers go through in their early days.
Hackers however are great people but I don't usually use the word. I'm just making sure people don't get me wrong because the word hacker is abused by so many stupid and bad people that society thinks, a hacker= a cracker. And that sux.
Hacking describes curiosity. A hacker is a person who is driven by that curiosity, a person who wants to explore and know things around him. A hacker is NOT a person who trashes other peoples PCs.
Examples of people who I think are true hackers:
Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox.

So I agree with many things Matt says and HappyHacker describes exactly what I said, that dark time in a programmers life. Also that sentence saying that we are punished for everything bad we do but rewarded for everything good we do, that's a sentence everyone may wanna think about.

I don't spend a whole lot of time on the message board so i didn't see this until rightnow... Anyway I'll try to keep it real with my tutorials.
Anyways the reason i use the name "happyhacker14" is because i wanted to describe the two main things that i am interested in, Happy Hardcore(RAVE) and Programming. the easiest way to describe programming is hacking, I am also 14 years old, therefore you have "happyhacker14".
And why does i say that i joined today? I would have posted 22 messages today and gone to the HOF. (I think i joined may 30th)

I don't know how it is in other countries, but in Sweden a "hacker" is some kind of a dark genoius .
Well, at least the people think "hackers" (hmm... well, 13-year old kids with BO) are very intelligent kids who know alot about computers... (and we programmers get of course no publicity, except for some kids who stole some code and made a cool VB program).
I'm getting angry, everything is so sick...
Bye !

sorry , but a hacker is just a good programmer ....

actually KaGeZ is right, the originaldefinition of hacker is programmer.
Posted by robost86 on 23:15:00 06-17-2001
Well, who said swedes are smart?
Posted by robost86 on 23:16:00 06-17-2001
Swedish has some strange words. When we don't want a word of our own for something, and we don't want the english word, we make up a new english word!
The "swedish" word Freestyle means Walkman, strange, right?

Yeah, a hacker is anyone that programs or does advanced stuff with a computer. A cracker is anyone that tried to break into systems and use bugs in scripts for their own gain.
The use of "hacker" in relation to what a cracker really does is all due to the ignorance of the media early-on.

Media lollipops, they can't get one word right. They don't even know what a programmer is (yep, I am serious).

btw , what the hell is a Media lollipop ??
sorry ... but I wanna know that

If lolliepops are candy, and some candy are air heads, does that make the media air-heads? ;p

wtf!?!? I didn't write "Media lillipops"!! No idea what that means.

hehe, you guys are indeed funny. have you guys not noticed that when you write "sucks" the word displayed in the message is "lollipops". Because, naturally, a lollipop is to be lollipoped right?

I don't like threads about the term hacker. So many people say the same thing everywhere. It gets on my nerves a little bit to see threads wasted on such stupid things. ::fwordhere:: the term hacker, if you want to be cool call yoursel a hacker, if you are a good programmer call yourself a programmer, I don't get the big deal. If the term hacker tends to be bad to people, don't use it.
Just know that no matter what there will be 13 year olds with a warez copy of vb and some virri they downloaded calling themselves hackers, so why not create a new term? Or use an old good one, 'programmer'.
To me and even non-computer-literate (i dont know why i did that) people it sounds smart and deserves respect.
I don't know why I am posting this, I am just sort of tired and bored. All the girls got me crazy, they don't know what they want, none of my girlfriends, hehe.
----------------
After I posted this I noticed it changed a curseword to 'scandisk', we are all (sortof) adults here, why the censorship?

Well, yes, I try to avoid the term to, just so that I don't confuse people BUT on the other hand, this is a term which totally belongs to us and the term "programmer" doesn't fully describe what the word hacker does. A hacker doesn't only like programming, he also likes computers in general and playing around with them, trying to get the best out of a machine. Curiosity must be described.
Anyway, I only use the term when I'm talking to people who understand what I mean and I only tell people who I know will understand.

That explains it... the scandisk thing.
I remember Fabs saying something like "I don't like how people go in and scandisk up computers" or something... I was like, what the scandisk .
Posted by jgrant on 03:47:00 06-23-2001
By you saying what a hacker is, how are you different from people saying a hacker is a malicous computer guru? The term (as with any word) means whatever the person says it means, based more on syntax. If CNN says there was an attack by hackers, people will understand. If slashdot says there is a new hackers resource website, people will understand.

Depends on who's hearing the information. People versed well with computers would know this would be a good thing because there would be more information for them to use. The average Joe Schmoe would hear this and say "Hackers have more tools to break into my computer with now!"

What would an average computer user be doing reading news from slashdot?
Posted by fsvara on 20:59:00 06-23-2001
Yeah, Joe Schmoe will not read that =)

Apart from censoring (which is not really our style) and the fact that it is funny (which is the actual use), it is useful because we'll use more "hackerish" expressions... like phuk - looks better to me

Posted by fabs on 22:45:00 06-28-2001
hehe, yeah, I think the word "scandisk" simply rox! Nowhere else on the internet is the word scandisk used to describe the 4 letter word

no, i don't have the logs of these early irc sessions. i ahve a scandiskin lot of recent logs tho, from 2 different servers, in 6 channels (#ypr, #anime, #suechtler on cj and #linuxsphere, #lno and #icewm on opn)...
hey, THAT'S what i could publish on my server.. good idea =)
