Currently I'm running RH7, but I need a newer kernel, and something a little different. I'm thinking of TurboLinux 7.0 [WS] or FreeBSD 4.5. Any one know of any *major* exploits, pros/cons with these distros? Axe...

freebsd is not a linux distro. it's a bsd.
i don't know much about turbolinux, but there aren't many users, meaning you'll have a harder time getting help.
if you need a newer kernel, why don't you just install a new one? Read my Linux-Kernel Installation HOWTO in the YPN Linux section if you don't know how to do that.
My favourite distros are Debian and Gentoo. But they're both more on the DIY side than RH.

Yeah, I realize that FreeBSD isn't Linux, it's UNIX[-like].
I think some of the kernel patches are larger than 1.44MB flopps aren't they? That's the only way I can currently get stuff on the computer except, CDROM. [CDR/RWs don't work].

aww, that's sad... you don't have internet on you linux box? the whole kernels are a lot bigger than a floppy, but the patches should fit.

another method would be to pack em with tar and split em. I think it's possible. If not, winace (linux version: unace, http://www.winace.com) should do it

Nope, I don't have connection to it yet. I think it has a winmodem, so I was trying to get the modules to work with it, but they need a newer kernel.
I was bored, and I had Slackware 8 laying around, so I installed it. Apparently it has both kernel 2.2 and 2.4, but it installes 2.2, so Im tinkering around with rebuilding a 2.4 kernel.

maybe you should try that. I think there was somebody who tried to get a winmodem working in linux before... if I could remember the name...

Well, I got the kernel built [Actuly that was fun process], but the modem module still doesn't seem to work.
What kinda modems do you all use?

You didn't forget to insert the module into the kernel after compiling? I sometimes do that . (use modconf)

Thanks for the reminder, but I don't think so. After I rebuilt the kernel, I went through the compiliation, and installation of the module. As I recall I used the commands ./make_build and ./autoload for the module. I may tinker with it a bit more and see if I get a more desierable responce out of it.

I think Comwizz can help you
afaik he just setted (or is setting) up his winmodem in linux.
