I was just wondering what sports (if any) you all play. I run track and cross-country, and I've played sports all my life. For those of you who don't know what cross-country is, it sis a sport where we run 3.1 miles (or 5 kilometers). My best times are:
.5 Mile (800 Meters): 2:17
1 Mile (1600 Meters): 5:26
2 Miles (3200 Meters): 11:46
3.1 Mile (5000 Meters): 19:18

I have been involved on one sport, too: it's called see-how-long-you-can-stay-awake-after-staying-up-all-night-coding
Posted by KaGez on 11:00:00 04-27-2002
the only thing I do is sports in school... we did some jogging too, I think it was like 7 kilometers. Took me 9 mins.

I'll step in and be the Anerican here and ask what the km-mile conversion is...

I play basketball, football, run, et al... [addsig]

I used to play ice-hockey. Now I skate a lot (both inlines and skateboard) to get some relaxation from coding

I beleive that the coversion from 7 kilometers would be just a little bit under 5 miles (which is impossible to run in 9 minutes)
Posted by sacah on 15:24:00 04-27-2002
Cross-Country has no limit on how far you run, they have 5 km Cross-Country, thats the one your talkin bout, I did a 7 & 12km Cross-Country too, no idea about my times, but I put both my knee capps out of place, so I cant run very well anymore.
I do Muay Thai, thats my main sport. With knee braces on

1.6 Km to a Mile

KaGez walks 40 km per hour. When he visits us in germany (and he comes by foot as usual) he has to run(somewhere between 250-300 km/h) on the left lane of the 'Autobahn'. [addsig]

nothing is impossible!
i'm not doing any special sports atm except at school... but i'm (probably) gonna start scuba diving sooner or later
Posted by jkcnshs on 06:52:00 04-28-2002
Well, considering the fact the world record for 5 kilometers is around 12 minutes or so, I don't think you could run a distance further than that in less time. But you're right... anything is possible! So if you did run that kudos to you!

The only sports I do is what they force us to do in school. Apart from that, it's skateboarding. I've tried judo, jiu-juitsu, wadoryu karate and shaolin gong fu. Martial arts is cool but I have no time or motivation to do it now .
Posted by jkcnshs on 10:33:00 04-28-2002
I've tried pretty much every single sport, and im the best at track and cross-country. I played baseball and soccer for about 5 yrs. football for one yr. and i even took up jujitsu. but running is my fave because of the discipline it takes, and it is more mind than body...
Posted by MooKeen on 11:48:00 04-28-2002
What are these 'sports' you speak of?
Posted by sacah on 13:06:00 04-28-2002
lol, Scuba diving is sweet, I breath through my mouth naturally, so I was really good at scuba divin, but it does not take much to modify your breathin anyway.

Without scuba gear, I can only swim 25 meters on one breath, but my lung capacity is gettin better, means my ashma must be gettin better.

I've been diving a coupla times. (Not certified though) I went a few times in our local lake and the visibility was like 2 inches. I wanna get certified though, even though it's been a while since I've been.

I do sword fighting. I used to swim but we haven't done that in a long time. Last year I was on a softball team. Not sure about this year.
Posted by sacah on 22:06:00 04-29-2002
must say knife fighting is a lot more fun, swords are too long, you can use elbows and legs with knives, lotsa fun, I dont know about rest of the world, but right off our (Australia) beach, we got the Great Barrier reef, its very clear water, and very pretty, should come divin down this way

sacah you bloody f*"ker!

At 10° C we call out the beginning of summertime here! ...and it rains about every day (did I mention it always rains all day?)...

If it would at least be snowy here and some mountains in the area, yeah, then it would rock. But I live somewhere in the middle between sonny coasts and snowy mountains. The boring middle where nothing happens and the days are grey.

I do bicycling (yes, bicycling is a sport if it's more than just riding on the sidewalk with training wheels) and swimming (actually, no diving, racing, or anything), and I do neither competitively. The last sports I played on a real team were soccer (football, if you prefer; defense, the most boring position in youth soccer) and baseball, but that is the past.

<rant about="sports competitions">
I find sports competitions stupid... Really, some sports are quite nice, but when it comes to competiting.. I mean, how is the person that ran 2 milliseconds faster or jumped a few centimeters higher better?
What about competing about penis size, arm length or whatever? It's just stupid imo...

then, international competitions are even worse... they make it sound like that the competing teams were actually representing their countrie's people, when they say things like "Germany vs. Cameroon", "France vs. Denmark" or something like that. They also play the national anthem of the countries before the game... I don't know if i should laugh or cry when i see such stupidities... i mean, come on, it's just a few people playing some game... it's nationalism almost...

then, the "fans"... people make it sound like sports fans were something important or something, but in fact it's just people who want to get that feeling of not being an individual anymore but part of a mob of thousands of people shouting, screaming, crying... forget the complicated real world, dive into a simple world where only the next goal, the next point, counts...
pah...

fsvara very true, I know it, but I still love competitive sports, and nothing compares to the buzz you get for being with thousands of people shouting, jumping and just having a great time. Most people go for a thing called The Atmosphere, its pretty much what you said, we know it, and love it.
Personally I think we as humans love to compete, and you will generally choose something your good at to compete in, if people are good at a sport, and they train and make sacrifices to get there, then thats their way of competing, the fact they are able to jump higher than the last person means they beat them, victory, ah sweet victory.

Some people dont like competing, but most of humanity do, if you are one of those people, I can funnly understand it must seem like a weird and highly stupid idea for civilized people to push themselves to breaking point just so they can say they WON.

The teams are meant to represent the countries, they were once players from that coutry, and the whole country could rally behind them, but now its all about money, we buy other countries players to play on our teams, not all sports do this, but its becoming increasingly popular.

I cant even remember what I wrote up the top, so if I repeated anything, sorry.

This thread's long since died, but I didn't get a say, so it never really finished

In high school I ran track and cross country (best time: 18:00.7 for 5K... Then I fscked my ankle up and never got near that time again). Since then, I've been playing a ton of different sports - paintball, roller hockey, lacrosse, weight lifting and stuff... I really want to get into martial arts, but I never have any time, plus the way my schedule is, I'm home 3 months and gone 3 months, so its tough to find a class I can consistently go to.
Posted by MoX on 01:55:00 08-07-2002
Yeah, martial arts are really interesting. But I think the time issue is very important. You probably have to train daily and stuff... [addsig]

I absolutely disagree with fsvara on this.... I think you're just completely overreacting... I mean, what's the problem if those peoples "run" from the "complicated" real life if they've got a day they won't work anyways? and, what's so "complicated" about this world? In the real world you also have your next goal or checkpoint in your sight, nothing more. You obey to the game rules (laws in this case) and play the game, which is your life. You have people who respect you and your work, who are (in the end effect) doing the same things as fans... is there really a so big difference between the real life and sports competitions? Think about it...

I also disagree with fsvara's two month old rant. The whole point of the international competition *is* that the players playing are representatives of the country. Their performances *do* actually reflect on the countries in the media's eyes, and that interpretation is passed to people that read the paper or watch the news on TV.

Fans are not a mob, not by any means (with some notable exceptions, but those seem to be mostly soccer hooligans ). Fans are a way to show support for the teams' endeavors - their years and years of training to get to physical greatness. That, and seeing a team with the name of your city/country on it drive home the winning run or win a race (ESPECIALLY if it's by a scant millisecond) does instill pride in your country or the human race or whatever.

C'mon - can no one here honestly say it wasn't amazing for Lance Armstrong to beat cancer that was supposed to be fatal, come back, and be in some extremely excellent shape, both physically and mentally to win the Tour De France, one of the most grueling tests of endurance ever, not once, but 4 straight times?
