The bubbling cauldron >> Shared-Source CLI
Posted by -KEN- on 06:16:00 06-06-2002
Ewwww...I can't believe MS has even partly degraded to any form of *-source other than "closed"

but anyhow, MS has released a commercially available Shared-Source CLI for .NET, and even used it to build a BSD version of .NET. Pretty spiffy if you ask me, I might download it just to see some of that source.

read more about it here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/02/07/SharedSourceCLI/default.asp

(Hmmm...the entire MSDN magazine is available online, complete with archives of previous issues. Definately a plus ) [addsig]

what is that Shared-Source CLI? maybe you can explain it to us, so that it might wake our interest a bit more
BTW, which licence does it use? if it has some licence so that you can't use the code for other things, it'd be quite senceless... maybe I'll take a look at it

Microsft and Open-source (or it's equivelent) used in the same paragraph? Those two should be like oil and water.

kagez - "shared source" - and afaik yes, it means you are only allowed to look at it, and that only under some very strict rules...

dxprog - you could always use an emulgator to make them mix
Posted by dxprog on 07:36:00 06-07-2002
Ok. Different analogy. That would be like north and south poles of a magnet.

Shared source is basically "Sign this, good. Now you can have a look at all of the source that we provide, learn from it, whathaveyou, but just don't rip us off"

Should speed along the Mono project though. And if you have BSD you only need to download the BSD version that MS wrote. [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 11:34:00 06-07-2002
I know what it means. I'm just saying for Microsoft to release the source code of on of their biggest products is kind weird. After all the secrecy about Windows then they release the code to .NET. You have to wonder. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 18:49:00 06-07-2002
first I also think what dxprog mentioned above...
and, I think Microsoft made a BSD version, since apparently many BSD boxes are running @ M$' offices, cuz they also ripped tons of code from BSD for old DOS applications, or parts of windows... there were big news about that some time ago...

The problems with such licenses are that people who have looked at the "real" sourcecode will have a hard time reimplementing it... microsoft will claim they have stolen the code from them.

I'm getting more ticked off with MS all the time. I love their products, so don't try to turn me to the Linux side, but I can't stand them. They recently bullied Dell out of selling computers with Linux. Start kicking around my favorite computer company and I get mad. [addsig]

/me kicks Dell

Dont blame me, Im just following my 2nd favorite company.

Finally a brave PC manufacturer stood up and sold linux boxes! That's the way it should be! Down with the Anarchy!
btw, I also like my own PCs best, cuz I know exactly what's inside

IBM is supporting Linux big time. It is nice to know what you have in the computer. I know the model of every peice of equipment in my computer. [addsig]

That'S the way it should be

IBM seems to really like Linux...What I like most about it, is that I sometimes here the word "Linux" on TV, now

(yeeee... G0d of code, finally ) [addsig]

You've come pretty far already!

The next hundred posts are always easier than the hundred before [addsig]

I noticed that I've been adding them up pretty fast lately. If your theory is right I'll have a thousand posts by July. [addsig]

I think I'm about to post 2000 posts

First favorite compainy is AMD
Posted by dxprog on 02:44:00 06-11-2002
I think KaGez almost had a thousand when I started back in February. Look at him now. I like AMD too. I have a K6(no 2 or III)-200Mhz running in my computer now and it does OK, except my voltage regulators are overheating something terrible. But I put the computer over the AC vent to keep it nice and chilly.

I've got a AMD Thunderbird 900 and it is behaving nice

But I've heard that AMD's were not as durable as Intel's in heavy longterm use...That was some time ago, so maybe today they do even better there [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 20:02:00 06-11-2002
I've got a AMD 1GHz athlon silently humming inside my box. It behaves well, does what I want it to do and is fast
What do I need more?
[addsig]
Posted by sacah on 21:54:00 06-11-2002
AMD mostly run hotter than Intel, but thats cause they work better than Intel, though most newer ones are pretty cool now, they will both last just as long as each other, but when you oc AMD it gets even hotter still, so even though AMD can oc further, it will burn out sooner, but if you dont oc insainly, AMD is a far better choice than Intel.

haha bigger, hotter, better?
Posted by MoX on 02:01:00 06-12-2002
My computer is a bit older now (one and a half year and maybe some weeks more)...What drove me to buy an AMD was mostly the price then [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 02:24:00 06-12-2002
It's not the processor that overheats, though I do think that Intels run cooler. I don't think my voltage regulators are up to the 2.9 core voltage they need to pump out. If I could over voltage to 3.3 I don't think I would have a problem. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 14:18:00 06-12-2002
I don't like OCing very much (only my Nvidia GF2MX ), so I think I'm well server with a Athlon
[addsig]
Posted by sacah on 18:16:00 06-12-2002
Um, yes, it is the cpu that overheats, its a widly known fact AMD are hotter than Intel, for their older cpus, AMD are cheaper, faster and better for overclocking, hence why anyone that knows anything about computers will run AMD
(-:
Uping the voltage will generate more heat, and you run the chance of burning it out.
Posted by dxprog on 22:07:00 06-12-2002
If the CPU could survive that kind of voltage for a second. I had fun overclocking my old pentium up to 166Mhz, and I also undervoltaged it. I never had one problem. [addsig]
Posted by sacah on 18:07:00 06-13-2002
During hot summers I will underclock my cpu and gfx card and ram, and lower the voltage too, then in winter I might start oc again, but ive done my pc before, need a new victum *uh* target.

I'd like to pack mine in dry ice for all seasons. Maybe, when I have a job, I'll get a new computer or a laptop. That'd solve my problems right there wouldn't it? [addsig]

sacah: Using your computer as a heating again? [addsig]

a friend of mine had his computer runnning overnight once and the air in the room got completely unbreathable.. it smelled strange, was extremely hot...
strange. i have my computer running virtually all the time and the air in my room is quite ok imo
Posted by KaGez on 23:05:00 06-14-2002
heh... what kind of PC was that? was it running windows?
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 02:31:00 06-15-2002
yeah, win XP. It's probably radiocative and changes oxygen to ozon or something... who knows
Posted by dxprog on 02:35:00 06-15-2002
No. I'd say Windows ME is more capable of something like that. ME was such a stupid thing. I bet my computer would do that running over night just running a simple DOS prompt, or even on the POST screen. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 00:14:00 06-16-2002
XP = Extra Plutonium ?
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 07:09:00 06-17-2002
No. XP = Xtra Power. Or XP = Finally a version of Windows that doesn't lock up when I move the mouse. The opposite applies to every other version of Windows. [addsig]
Posted by MoX on 15:24:00 06-17-2002
So you finally got something for the bucks you paid MS over the years? [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 00:20:00 06-18-2002
Pretty much. Every other version of Windows is like Chernobyl reactor 4. I personally haven't tested XP, but a guy who owns a local computer shop says it's much much better. [addsig]
Posted by MoX on 05:35:00 06-18-2002
I've got WinXP on another partition and it seems to run pretty well (for a Windows ). But I haven't tested it long enough to find out if it's good or not, and I'm not going to do so... [addsig]
