All about computers >> Searching for a program for a LAN...
Posted by QRan93R on 04:05:00 10-02-2002
I need a program for talking on LAN. The most needed thing is that the program must send to my friends computer on a LAN a message directly on the screen and that my friend could instantly answer. In other words, I need a program, that would send a message to a person, and the person MUST see the message instantly. It could be a program that you know, or you could make it. I can't do it myself, because I'm to lazy and I have done just a program - calculator. |-]

MSN Messenger...
ICQ...
AIM...
Jabber...
MyCQ...
Trillian...
and numerous other I won't bother to name.

You can also simply use the command NET MSG in Windows.

well, IRC (you'll need a LAN internal server), or "talk" will work too.

Well, my mIRC isn't working on my computer, because my DSL isn't refreshing correctly the view when someone post something. And I want, that the program would directly show the message on the screen of my friends computer. For example: I type somewhere "Hello!!!" and a window on my frieds computer would instantly appear saying: "Hello!!!". My friend must not have opened mIRC/ICQ or other special program to see it.

P. S. Neu[man], how to use that command exactly?? I tried to post something, but couldn't understand it.

I windows9x/ME you can use WinPopup, which needs to be run on the other computer too.
And, btw:
It is impossible to chat with somebody if he/she doesn't have a program running to recieve your "chat-request". No matter if it is winpopup, talk, ICQ or whatever. I think you should go and understand chatting/IM basics first

If non of these work to your satisfaction (I used to use win-popup when I was running 98 and it does my nut in) then check out www.download.com and search for LAN Instant Messaging or something of that nature, download a couple and give them a test.

Also, you could try Netmeeting (although you'd have to make sure that everyone on the LAN was running it all the time so you can contact each other.

Oh yeah, and all these are Instant Messaging tools for the Internet, and as far as I'm aware dont let you talk without an internet connection - so probably not what you're looking for.

if you have a linux/unix machine running in that network, install netkit-talkd/talk on it and ssh to it (the person who you want to chat to should do so too) and fire up talk. That should work in almost any case
