i find php cool =)

i know not much about it, but what i have seen makes me like it very much. if you know c and perl, it will be very easy for you, as most of its syntax is borrowed from these langauges. Also the way it's hadnled by a html preprocessor makes it better than perl for web pages, i think.

C and perl? ;p Perl worked just fine for me! It really isn't that difficult, just look at the online documentation on php.net. [addsig]

I like JavaScript.. If you are on some boring place without a compiler, you can always write something in JavaScript =)

I wish I knew Javascript It's on myto-do list though... [addsig]

Hehe, the only thing I've ever written in PHP is this website/parts of Sasquatch system. But I will start programming more than ever when I return home!! [addsig]

dude, i wanna learn PHP, but I don't have money to host it even if i learn it
Posted by Peter on 21:00:00 08-02-2001
Hm, if you want to know PHP, I suggest you'd read my tutorials about installing/setting up Apache and PHP.

Then you can play around with it on your own box. There are some free PHP hosts, I don't know of any that works well though, it might get better later on.

I'm writing my PHP tutorial, so, stay tuned .

One free-host that offers PHP is spaceports. You get an address similar to galileo.spaceports.com/~username, they have various space related servers but that is besides the point. You then have to sign up for a CGI-Account and you get a 10MB limit on scripts on that site. Good but could start charging due to server-running costs.

10MB for the scripts only, or for everything ?
sorry, didn't quite understand that

Henning: if it's about client-side scripting, yes.
Posted by KaGez on 01:55:00 12-16-2001
hm ...
/me thinks
There was a guy called Henning @ our school (DSTY) till the last summer vacation...
Henning: are you that guy? =D
anyways, imho PHP is the best scripting language, you can also combine it with JS, so you can do both, Server- and Clientside scripting. I know, Perl can also do that, but I dunno why, but I like PHP more.

the downside of js is of course that it needs support from the client. but it's the only way to make websites "active" with little menus and such stuff besides of flash...

but you know what i think about flash for webdesign...
Posted by Peter on 11:34:00 12-16-2001
Hehe, you're saying webdesign - design is about cool looks, usually. It's not easy to find the appropriate word for it, and I've used "webdesign" to label something else too.

I'd rather call it web development /webdev. For webdesign, flash can be good.
Posted by KaGez on 15:37:00 02-08-2002
btw, how do you program in flash? do you have to compile that stuff or something? does anybody have any valueable information about it ? (except for that flash builder thingy from macromedia)
