kde and gnome normally have screenshot proggies . ksapshot is one for kde...I can't remember the name of the gnome one.
Anyway, search Freshmeat and you'll probably find alot of these progs!

in gnome you could use:
1) gimp. Very easy, you need version 1.2.0 or above. Main Window ---> Acquire ---> Screen Shot
that's it for GIMP
2) eeyes
3) screen shooter applet
