Alright, I'm soon gonna start on sasquatch2 Learned a lot the last few days and got a couple of new ideas. Here's what the new features will be:
- The phpBB-profile and the phpBB profile will be one. This means, more optionl questions when signing up ---> more info.
- Frontpage will display the number of currently registered users as well as the once currently surfing.
- When clicking on a persons profile, not only the person's last submissions should be visible but also his/her last posts.
- Better editing. Edit just about anything.
- The use of cookies to keep you guys from having to type in your uname+pwd every 2 mins
Ok, those are the most important new features sasquatch2 will (hopefully ) have.
Something that would also be nice: A Java-applet which connects to irc.chatjunkies.org #ypr Anybody willing to code this?

may sound stupid , but I think a search-engine would do great . That way we could search for some specific things much more faster and much more easier . Just a thought , but I think it's pretty useful ... if it isn't too much work ...

Yeah, I wanted to do that. Sorry, forgot to mention it

didn't we find one back then?
it was called something with E...
well, we didn't get it to work.
anyway, what's that irc applet that is currently on the server (in the /web dir)? i always wodnered what that thing was doing there. is it the one with the ads?
Posted by KaGez on 15:09:00 07-02-2001
hhhmmm .... I dunno that (
How should I
But , I think it's a good idea to put a chat applett on the HomePage =)

I was thinking it would be cool to have an area where members could post questions and get them answered by other members. Or is the messageboard good enought for this purpose?
Posted by robost86 on 21:47:00 07-02-2001
I think the messageboard is good enough for that.
Posted by KaGez on 07:47:00 07-03-2001
I'd also say that we could make a extra section for that on the message board , but we don't need a new section for that

Posted by fsvara on 15:27:00 07-03-2001
uhm, isn't that exactly what the board is for? hehe...
why do you think are there secrtions called 'C/C++', 'Linux', 'Web programmign'
Posted by KaGez on 01:24:00 07-04-2001
hhhmmmm .... right ....

Posted by fabs on 03:16:00 07-04-2001
yep, let:s just keep a bbs. Anyway, about the java-applet, yes, we have one and it's even free in the free beer scence BUT the colors looks crappy and it's not customizable.

fabs:
what about the IRC bot you started before ?? can' that code be used as a base ??

Posted by Peter on 17:42:00 07-06-2001
If he got anywhere with it, it could.
[addsig]
Posted by fabs on 05:54:00 07-07-2001
no, it can't. It's a perl-script and as I've said so many times, CGI-chats are just so slow! Java is what we need.

fabs:
How about porting that to Java ?? I dunno , but it shouldn't be too hard , or is it ?? That's what I really ment ... not use that PERL thing as it is .

Posted by epall on 03:55:00 07-08-2001
I know a little bit of Java, I might be able to help.
Posted by fabs on 04:21:00 07-08-2001
Porting perl to Java is just like writing Java from scratch
Epall, can you do Java-soocket-programming?

Posted by KaGez on 05:58:00 07-08-2001
ok ...

Posted by Peter on 09:10:00 07-08-2001
Does anyone know of a good tutorial about C/C++ socket programming?
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 09:37:00 07-08-2001
I think Drago gave me a cool link some days before ... fsvara also got it ... I'll look for it . and post it on this board when I find it

Posted by epall on 18:32:00 07-08-2001
I can do a little Java socket programming, I usually learn along the way. I know there's got to be some already written Java IRC code so I'll look for that for a starting point.
Posted by epall on 18:57:00 07-08-2001
Ok, I've found a Java IRC client (with source) that's got everything I need, and it's well documented.
Posted by fabs on 00:19:00 07-09-2001
Cool! Can you maybe send me the source-code, too so I can take a look? Or do you wanna edit it first and upload a running version somewhere?
fabs
Posted by KaGez on 02:10:00 07-09-2001
hey Peter:
do you wanna do Winsock or UNIX socket ??
[addsig]
Posted by fabs on 13:38:00 07-09-2001
If you're doing unix sockets, I know of a horrible tutorial. The one at blacksun Also Anticode.com has a lot of exploit programs and many use Unix sockets. I also recieved a mail from CoolerQ today He send me some source-code and a library for socket programming on Linux.
fabs
Posted by Peter on 15:47:00 07-09-2001
Hm... I don't know. Maybe I'm not looking for sockets - I just want to be able to open a connection to a server and communicate.
Posted by fabs on 16:33:00 07-09-2001
that's sockets.
fabs
Posted by epall on 17:53:00 07-09-2001
It's actually a bot but it does have all of the stuff to handle IRC, it's called oak and the address is:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/oak/
Posted by epall on 18:06:00 07-09-2001
uh, oh. It looks like it may not have any send ability.
Posted by epall on 18:17:00 07-09-2001
AHA! I found the send command!
Posted by epall on 23:14:00 07-09-2001
ok, I've almost finished version 1.0.
Posted by fabs on 00:19:00 07-10-2001
Nice!
When it's done, make sure you upload it somewhere so we can see it
fabs

Is opening a socket and connecting to it a different function in Unixsock and Winsock ?? Never done it before , just askin...

About sasq2 again: The problem right now is that I have company for the next 1.5 weeks. Some friends from Germany are staying here in Japan and I'm showing them around a lot so there's not much time for serious coding. Peter and I are gonna do sasq2 together btw That'll be fun, just like last BIG update
fabs
Posted by Peter on 18:25:00 07-10-2001
Yeah, it will rock... I am working/swimming most of my time so I am not very avaiable either. But be sure that we are doing it whatsoever!

Posted by epall on 16:03:00 07-11-2001
Well, I couldn't quite get the applet to work so I created a command line application to play around with the IRC code and I made progress: I was able to connect to irc.chatjunkies.org and recieve all the welcome BS. Then I sent a private message to my bot and it picked it up! My only problem now is that I can't seem to get it to work with channels.
Posted by KaGez on 17:55:00 07-11-2001
hhmmm ... for that ask fabs how to do it ... he recently built a IRC bot in PERL , but the idea of channels should be the same in PERL and Java , so he might be able to help ya out =)

Posted by epall on 22:03:00 07-12-2001
Ok, I got a Java app that works somewhat, it's kinda unreliable but I'll fix that. The applet, on the other hand, isn't working (for me at least) because applets don't have the permissions do to what's needed to get an IRC connection (namely, opening a socket).
Posted by fabs on 16:21:00 07-13-2001
I'm pretty sure applets can do sokets since I have actually seen a java-applet connect to IRC. I have only got the byte-code though and the applet has banners and ugly colors

My final post before I go ! =)
Fabs is right . Java applets *SHOULD* have permissions to work with sockets . I've also seen some Java-IRC-applets . It's a japanese one , but it's the most common one in Japan . It's called TpChat , and you can search it on Excite . I thin they also had a english site , so check that one out . I think it also had the sourcecode .
cheers , later dudes

back to Sasquatch2:
I was thinking that I would really like more ways to gain status, like other people rating my posts on the msg board. Also, maybe you could integrate the Newbie, Kiddie, etc. into a member's main rank.
Posted by Peter on 20:37:00 07-21-2001
A very neat idea. We'll se what we can do. Me and Fabs have to interact a bit so we know what to do and then off we go... The functions you suggested will be put to the test .
Posted by epall on 03:49:00 07-23-2001
ok, cool.
Posted by epall on 16:16:00 07-23-2001
Another idea:
I'd like to be able to put up my tut but keep adding to it and have people be able to increase (or decrease) their rating of it. So basically, it would be much more dynamic. Is this already implemented? If not, do you think it's an ok idea?
Posted by Peter on 16:34:00 07-23-2001
Actually, as opposed to what I told you on IRC, it's a good idea. As we'd date-mark the tutorials, you could add to them and then they'd appear on top of the "recently posted" list. Every document would have a list of updates, so that everyone'd know if/when it was altered.
And because you'll be able to edit your rating in Sasq2, this function might also be implemented.
