i started on an rpg. i have the story written(modifications will be made), and the file formats are all ready. i will be using SDL for the gfx and crap. the battle engine will be real-time (designed it myself, muwhahahaha ). i need someone thats either good with file i/o or sdl. just IM me on AIM, Flikm475, tell me on irc, or email me, flikm475@hotmail.com

the only part that bothers me in this project is that it uses SDL
but the idea itself sound cool to me
maybe you could show us what you've done up to now, and then ppls could think better, because maybe some join, and then don't like the way you coded it (you did a linebreak at the wrong point!! ) and he/she will part again.
Post some code!

What kind of RPG will it be? More like Baldur's Gate or more like FinalFantasy - these are the two most different Real-Time fighting RPGs I know.
I prefer the FF type...

KaGez: i dont have much done ...
MoX: neither. more like a mix of both with some other stuff thrown in. baldur's gate and FF bot have turn-based battle engines ....

What would you code it in? I'd be interested if i get to do some sweet OOP C++ for it
How did people write RPGs before native OOP? madness...

right now, basically everything is a class (a map class and character class), and ill probably make a lot of stuff (items, switches, tilesets) classes.

how about making it a RPG as "Grandia"? I really think that that game rocked (grandia 2 especially), so it would be cool to make a clone of that, or at least that extremely cool battle system
The battle system and the story are the vital parts of a RPG, so maybe think about it

Heh...Grandia did not have real-time fighting system. And FinalFantasy had...ever played it? In fact FF and Baldur'S are both "kind of real-time"...

flikm - could you post the story somewhere so we could take a look? i'd love to read it and maybe make some suggestions

Am working on a 'game' kindof a cross between a MUD and descent
As i see it its a pretty sweet idea, but i'm still working on it

ok, FF is turn-based. you hit the enemy thensit back and watch them kill you. then you attack, and this repeats. personally, i think this is not really intense or exciting gameplay.
My battle engine will let the player assign key-combos for different spells and attacks for real-time gameplay. Then, the player can set up strategies. This is done by grouping the characters and assigning them to be either aggresive or defensive(key combos are used for this, also). There will be levels of aggression and defensiveness, 1 to 10 scale. 10 means no defense which is usually a bad idea, and 0 is copletely defensive and no attacking. What attack will they be using hwen you're not controlling them, you ask ... The engine will let you set up primary attack that the character will use when you are not controlling them. A bit complicated? Not really unless youre playing 8 characters or something. the most charcters you can have at one time is 4. Also, this will not happen overnight. The player will start with 1 character, then move on (I may even had some kind of boot camp or whatever to the game). (ya, that was pasted from some other post )
the story is pretty long and needs some serious modifications, but here it is:
A plague had been burning through the city of Agsoid for almost 17 years now. The plague was believed to be a creation of Ofen, the God of the Underworld and Fire, in a form where the humans were helpless.
Ofen was believed to once have been the God of War and brother to Vucer, the God of All, ruling the warriors of the Gods and aiding his people to victory. One day, Ofen and Vucer got into a heavy argument (Some believe that this argument was about whether or not to destroy Agsoid because they were disobedient at the time). Ofen was very mad at Vucer, and he rounded up all his warriors to fight Vucer. Ofen would get his way, and at the same time, he would become the God of All, Ruler of the Universe. Well, it didn't work out as the God or War planned. Vucer was well-deserved to be the God of All. Using his intelligence, he defeated Ofen and humiliated him. He sent him to the Underworld and told him to rule there. In the Underworld, Ofen became skilled wth fire. That is how he is now known as the God of the Underworld and Fire.
So now, Ofen was paying back, and he did get his way (some believe). Another strange thing occured. On the day of the first death from the plague, there was only one recorded birth, the birth of Firon. The people in town said that Firon was Ofen himself incarnated as a human and said he should be killed to rid of the plague. Everyone hated him, and he had no family. They had died from the plague. Then one day, an old man found(?) Firon walking home from the beach where he practiced fighting with his sword and archery. This is where you come in ...

ive decided that the story will work like FF. it wont tell the story at the beginning of the game or anything, but you unravel the story as you go.
modified story:
The war has been raging around the city of Agsoid for almost 17 years now. The enemy were believed to be the soldiers of Ofen, the God of the Underworld and Fire, in his most definite form.
Ofen waged war on the Nowan, the City of the Gods. He was defeating the Gods when Noas was born to the Gods. Noas was a fierce warrior in battle, but he was gentle and intelligent. He ventured through the Weop, the World of Immortals, seeking the sword that would help to defeat the Ofen's vast army. He found the sword and many friends. When he came back, the city was oveerun, and there were very few survivors. He found out that Ofen had somehow seeped into the city and set fire to the city. Noas vowed that he would kill Ofen himself, and set off to find him. Noas found Ofen but his army was still lurking. He fought his way to Ofen with all his newfound friends. When Noas found Ofen, Ofen made a deal with Noas that they would fight and Noas' friends could not interfere. Noas accepted, and he defeated Ofen and sent him to the Underworld. Noas had received wounds that would have healed if he were immortal, but they soon found out that he was not. Ofen was emprisoned in the Underworld, and there, he constantly experimented with the fire that was aronud him. That is how he is now known as the God of the Underworld and Fire.
On the day of the first battle on Agsoid, there was only one recorded birth, the birth of Firon. The people in town said that Firon was Ofen himself incarnated as a human. It had been written that the human incarnation of Ofen and a human incarnation of the hero of the godly war Noas would be born, and the war would be fought again by humans. They said that Firon should be killed for them to be victorious. Everyone hated him, and he had no family. His mother had died giving birth to him, and his father died in battle. Firon was too young to enlist or get drafted, so he practiced with his sword and archery on the beach. Then one day, an old man found(?) Firon walking home from. This is where you come in ...

Do it hardcore FF style and begin with a character that has lost his memory.

Posted by KaGez on 16:48:00 04-15-2002
haha, altho it reminds me much of FF

Posted by Flikm on 12:21:00 04-17-2002
ya, losing his memory, that's WAY too much like FF. i was just playing FF9 and the main character doesn't know anything about his past or whatever, and he finds out hes like some dudes creation and hes supposed to bring havoc on the world or something.
Posted by MoX on 20:02:00 04-17-2002
Hehe...FF9 was nice...FF8 better, FF7 the best ever. Hmm...maybe FinalFantasyAdventure for GameBoy (released some time in the _early_ nineties rocks even more
Final Fantasy Character never know much about themself - never more than the player at least

never played FF7, but i saw some screenshots. im sorry but the characters are all tall and stuff. thats ugly and not my style.
Posted by MoX on 07:17:00 05-10-2002
Tall characters? What do you mean?
Whatever, the character graphics in FF7 where very bad. The backgound images were a lot nicer. Hell, once you're deep enough in a game you don't care about graphics anymore...
