Ok, what about everybody going to quakeforge.sf.net, getting the client and connecting to
206.87.27.3?
We could then have a ypn tournament or something.. hehehe )

I would, but I'm at work right now, plus my network connection would kill me in the end if I tried that... hwo about Tribes or smth?
Posted by fsvara on 16:42:00 09-26-2001
yeah but Tribes isn't free... Quake is.
Posted by Govtcheez on 17:01:00 09-26-2001
It isn't, huh? Well, with a copy protection scheme like that, it might as well be... It's like 100meg to install, and after that - you don't need a CD. sounds pretty free to me
Besides, it can't be more than 10-20 at a store...

or all get HL and then get CS or so, that'd rule soooo much, i'd even have a server to play on... fast server.... but works for CS only...
Posted by fsvara on 16:54:00 09-27-2001
I was actually talking about something the few linux users among us could use, too... hehehe
Posted by Govtcheez on 17:27:00 09-27-2001
Linux users? Bah! Who needs 'em? Damned commie open-source hooligans! Pirates is what I calls 'em! We should have to pay for all software, none of this GPL crap! ::shakes cane:: Why, when I was your age, we were happy if Gates didn't make us shine his shoes when we paid for Windows! And we liked it! I had to walk through 5 feet of snow to Ye Olde Software Shoppe (never you mind Babbages and Best Buy) for 14 miles! Up hill! Both ways! And we liked it!
::sigh:: Damn, this place makes me feel old...

well Kagez wrote a tutorial on how to play HL on linux.... right? and also, most of HL dedicated servers are linux based, so that shows that other people, too, found a way like kagez to play HL Cs on linux
Posted by fsvara on 20:48:00 09-27-2001
but hl is not cs, and these linux servers are dedicated counterstrike servers which *do* exist for linux because of linux' better stability.
And that WINE thing, even if it works more or less well, still seems like a strange hack to me...
And I really can't understand your urge to play commerical games (or to tell us we're too young, govtcheez)... I didn't say Quake 1 because it just popped to my mind, but because it's
1) free software now
2) native linux version
3) short download
4) easy on hardware
5) a classic

--> your urge to play commerical games
Not really an urge to play commercial games, per se... I just like Tribes more... I don't play it because it's commercial - I play because it's a great game...
Quake's cool, too... Tribes is just... I dunno... This had a point when I started writing, I promise (you youngins!)
Posted by Sebi on 23:14:00 09-28-2001
see i play Counter-strike, not because lots of people play it, or because it is a commercial game, but because its fun to play! its fun to play as a team, and to coordinate a team and see how well ur team works together. well... and i think i couldn't adjust to the graphics of quake, because i played Max Payne, and Serious Sam for a while, and if u'd compare those 3D graphix, it'd be so wierd. WHat i think is cool is that ID published the Source code of Quake, thats sweet, and others can use the engine from the game now i guess...

Well, Svara, you posted this at the time of my hard-drive partition breakdown, so I couldn't really say anything. But as soon as I make this work (as soon as I get time for playing.. next year? ) I will happily join you for a game.
