What programming skills do the people here at YPN have? I know some of you, but not all. Tell us what languages you know/use, what tools, and for how long you've been programming. If everybody knows what programming skills the people have, they can ask the right person

Here is my 'profile':

I know BASIC, C (and some C++), Pascal and x86 assembler. I'm using NASM (used TASM until a year ago) for assembler, QBasic for BASIC, Turbo Pascal 7 for Pascal and Borland C++ 2 for C/C++. For windows & 32-bit programs I use LCC. I started programming BASIC september '97, C in early '98, Pascal spring '98, and assembler '99.

I know pretty much, but I'm not a very good programmer, I get tired of projects after just a few days, and I never get stuff working (of course I have done some good programs, but only a few percent of all programs I start at becomes something).

Hehe, Robert is a coding genious but he doesn't want to say it loud .

Well, I know HTML, which I learned from 1997 until now .

VB from, I guess, 98... Never been very good at it (not advanced stuff). I just fooled around with QBasic...

C/C++, I've never really used but I know the syntax pretty much. I'm building those skills now.

I know the binary number system and the theory of interrupts but nothing else related to Asm. I'm gonna learn that too quite soon .

So I'm mostly the Webmaster guy... I know HTML/CSS/PHP, a little-little Perl... And a bunch of design (look at the YPN website and tell me ) Don't ask me about more than basic stuff in Basic, VB or C/C++!

Hmm... "He's a programming genious".

I'm not. I admit I know more than HTML and VB, but I'm nothing compared to a real programmer. For real programmers, check #uuu and #assembler at openprojects...

Anyways, tell us about your programming skills =)

Ummm...I've been programming HTML since about 1996 or so, if that counts as a language.

Perl I began to program 16 months ago in April of 2000...I only use it for CGI, so I don't know the entire array of commands. I code it all the time, I.E.: every day, and am starting to do some socket programming with it and making actual programs and not just scripts for internet use.

Visual Basic 6 for about 8 months, I began to fiddle around with it in about December of 2000. I haven't done a whole lot with this either, but I know my way around it pretty well.

PHP I picked up pretty quickly because it's so close to Perl in Syntax...I've only been programming it for about 6 months though, since February of this year.

C/C++ I'm just starting to learn (because I got on staff for a 3d MMORPG that needs coders, so they said they'd give me time to learn it.). [addsig]

No, HTML doesn't count as a programming language

I don't think PHP's syntax is anything like Perl, besides how you dont have to initialize a variable before you use it, that's about all I can think they have in common.

I am currently learning Java, I have some other programming skills, but as of now I won't claim them, because they are not too good at all.

I use the Sun JSDK, and an IDE called RealJ. Sometimes I don't use the IDE because it is faster without it, but for bigger programs I really like RealJ, it has a class browser and such that help with development.

Robert or Peter, oneday you will have to explain to me about interrupts, I probably won't learn ASM for a while, but hell, knowledge doesn't hurt anything.

PHP is based off of Perl and C/C++, so it shares some commands and syntax, not a whole lot but still some. [addsig]

PHP is a programming language, so no shit it will have some stuff in common, but where did you read it is based on perl, c, and c++? I am looking through there site now and I fail to see it. I don't think PHP looks anything like C or Perl.

Hmmm, I found this
'Notice how this is different from a CGI script written in other languages like Perl or C '

That does not say PHP is based on those languages though, it sort of says the opposite.

To me personally it is a whole lot like C. I haven't programmed in Perl very much so I can't comment on that tho.

PHP is so not based off of Perl and C. It may have somethings in common, but only because they are both programming languages.Basicly every programming language has while, for, if statements.

i have the impression that the syntax is almost exactly the same in php and c. what connects perl and php is that there are functions for all sorts of stuff, and it's a lot geraed towards playing with text

i lollipop at every programming language. except for HTML, C++, and the '" programming language "' Adobe Photoshop and Flash

hhhmmm .. and I'm the Jackass

BASIC (almost nothing anymore), a LITTLE VB, C (little C++) and that's it ....
But try to beat me in OpenGL !!

KaGez: You're not the best programmer here, but there are also alot of kids here who can't do much else than web pages...

hm ... maybe ...
but , to be true , it still bothers me a bit to be one of the worst ...

I have a long list of languages I can code in. Will give details on each
C/C++/VB/BASIC/QB/HTML/JAVA
C - Familiar with all functions: im 'ok'
C++ - Familiar with all functions: im 'ok'
Visual Basic - Easy as hell: 'im good'
BASIC - Easy as hell: 'Concider me an expert '
QBasic - Almost exactly like basic: 'im good'
HTML - Use netscape and frontpage for that: 'familiar with the text language'
JAVA - Useful language: 'Familiar with it'

Thats it!

Dear god, I had no idea it was going to format like that. Sorry about the super long list.

1st language was java, bout 18mths ago. got bored with that after 2weeks and started learning c/c++.
then learnt asm, python, perl, bash.

java: basic, i can remember enough to know i dont ever want to see it again.
c: advanced - mostly unix stuff. sockets, pthreads, IPC, etc.
c++: same as c, but with classes
asm: basic - real mode stuff. bit of unix asm too.
perl: intermediate - tiny web bots mainly
python: basic - read the tute that came with it, thats it
bash: master - not really much to know, so i learnt it all

i've also written many hello wrold programs in obsolete languages i hope to never see again.

OK , expanded my knowledge a bit .
Now I'm also able to code in C++ =D So I think it won't be difficult to learn Java too ... maybe I'll try it too
