The Crew's Lounge >> One user under multiple names
Posted by dxprog on 05:52:00 12-28-2002
I need to bring something up. I think most everyone here is familiar with kpyro. Well, I know he's been going under different names. I know for a fact that pyrosquared was him because he IMed under that name for a while. I think that he is now going under the alias of ophline because he has the exact same attitude. I think something needs to be done about this guy (don't ask me what). [addsig]
Posted by Peter on 05:56:00 12-28-2002
What attitude is that? Is he being an ass?
Posted by KaGez on 17:52:00 12-28-2002
well, to be honest I don't care about the attitude, but I care about users using multiple usernames at once.
But, partyfish (the all in one wonder ) will solve this problem to a certain degree. You will need to have a valid email address to activate accounts etc., so you will need to make several different email addresses of yourself public. I think nobody wants to publish all his mail addresses I will still need to fix the registration routines, because they currently don't work, since I have made many changes in the user db table. Anyways, when I'll fix it, I'll also implement email checking, so that one can't sign up multiple times with only 1 mail address.

kpyro alone e-mailed me under three different addresses. So I think if this is the same guy he has a slew of different addresses. I just thought that it was kind of weird that:

a) kpyro changed his name to pyrosquard while still using the other name
b) kpyro and ophline expect you to spoon feed them answers

ophline has been bugging me about writing this sound comparison code when I keep telling him I just don't have time. kpyro used to do the same exact thing. Okay, that's my firey post for today, if one can call that real firey . [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 01:32:00 12-29-2002
well, let's think of something then...

dxprog:
oh, btw, forgot to tell you:
I've put the old search engine (the one currently running on the site), together with the rest of the sasquatch code onto my server. it's located at:
http://kage-chan.homelinux.net/files/dxprog.tar.gz

In order to use it, you will have to create a db, and set everything up inside it (sorry, I have no idea where the dump went ). You will also need to set the first 4 vars in the include/config.php file.
As you can see, sasquatch is pretty unmaintained already
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 04:44:00 12-29-2002
Two meg?!? That's quite a bit for a search engine, unless, of course, that's all of SasqII. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 18:00:00 12-29-2002
that is the whole sasquatch, with all images etc., so 2 meg isn't too big
I think partyfish is smaller tho... the images are compressed to the max in partyfish to keep it fast
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 20:16:00 12-29-2002
Yeah, I think partyfish was only 350K when I last downloaded it. I try to keep my pages down below 500K. If I can get an image down to 16 colors without losing too much quality, I will [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 01:33:00 12-30-2002
hehe, so do I, especially to keep the load to my server low
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 09:38:00 12-30-2002
I try to get my pages to load as fast as... computerly possible [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 12:46:00 12-30-2002
hmmm... mine are as fast as it is possible with this connection
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 13:08:00 12-30-2002
You have DSL don't you? [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 14:02:00 12-30-2002
Cable, 3.5Megabyte/s downstream (max.) and 50Kilobyte/s upstream (max.)
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 22:12:00 12-30-2002
WWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Sorry. At least MSN never drops below 5K, and I have no idea how fast upload is. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 01:13:00 12-31-2002
msn? didn't you have AOL? :/
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 03:25:00 12-31-2002
We had AOL. We're with MSN now, and I am as happy as ever. Yes, an MS product is better than AOL. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 12:50:00 12-31-2002
Well, Netscape is better than IE
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 23:43:00 12-31-2002
Depends. On my computer Netscape kept locking up. Not to mention IE was, and is, simply faster, especially when you compare it to Mozilla in Linux. But then again, everything was slow in Linux. For me that is. One of these days I'll have a decent computer and these problems will be non-existant. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 02:25:00 01-01-2003
IE is just fast because Windows loads all the needed libs for it at startup. So, if you would start IE without the libs lying around in RAM already, it'd probably take longer than Mozilla or NS
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 09:00:00 01-01-2003
Yeah, that's true. I'm not going to bother with either, or Linux, until I have a faster computer. I don't have three years to wait just to start it up, and that's not including apps . [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 14:13:00 01-01-2003
so, then let's get back to the actual topic
Or are we done with that already?
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 00:28:00 01-02-2003
We need to figure out what one is to do about people like that, or if there is some way of keeping them from using multiple names aside from e-mail stuff. [addsig]
Posted by MoX on 17:37:00 01-02-2003
Well, I'm afraid we need to do most of the work manually. Obvious things like the same email should be blocked out. But most people have more than one email address, so they can create one user-account for every address they have.

So I guess identifying these dudes is a task we have to fulfill ourselves. I suggest writing an email to the "suspects" asking them if they are using more than one name (in some cases they just might have got bored of their old nick or something like and created a new account because there is no option to change it) and that, if it is true, that they should delete all but their favourite account.

If they do not cooperate we have to watch their actions more carefully, because it may still be that we are wrong with our "suspicion". Finally, if we are sure, we will ban these people and all their email addresses.

What do you think? [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 01:07:00 01-03-2003
That sounds good to me. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 00:17:00 01-04-2003
ok. Maybe we could create a little "ban" table for partyfish? The signup routines ceck all that stuff, and if anything matches the stuff in the ban table, they won't be let through.
But, who's ganna code it?
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 02:20:00 01-04-2003
Always the one who asks [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 02:49:00 01-04-2003
eh? ok, I just returned from a sys-reinstall, so it's probably still going to take 1 or 2 days until I have everything and can starts to code again. And, next tuesday school will start again, bah!
I'll try to implement it when I've got the problem in the "Lost Password" routines ....
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 03:20:00 01-04-2003
I could do it when I return to hacking, then I could finish the search engine (I had a great idea about that the other day ) [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 12:24:00 01-05-2003
I think it would be easier for now if I do it, since I coded the rest of the user module too, and I'm quite familiar with it already.
I'll do it after finding the bug in the "Lost Password" stuff...

btw, where did the beta go?
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 23:08:00 01-05-2003
Beats me! I'll be coding the search engine again at the end of this week. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 23:52:00 01-05-2003
that sounds good
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 10:02:00 01-06-2003
Me too. It'll be nice to be doing something new again. [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 06:24:00 01-23-2003
I'm adding Schmokey to the list of kpyro suspects. He's asking the same question that ophline bugged me about. [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 01:55:00 02-02-2003
Yep, ophline is kpyro. He expected me to answer just like kpyro did. And if you need more evidence look at the birth dates for kpyro, pyrosquared, and ophline. The first two are impossible and ophline's is the same date that kpyro gave me when we used to IM each other.

Maybe he would not have created so many accounts if we already had an option to simply change you user account in sasquatch. But if it will be finished, partyfish will have it [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 08:39:00 02-02-2003
That's true, but why would he change his e-mail too? Still somewhat of a mystery. [addsig]
Posted by MoX on 00:04:00 02-03-2003
Why not simply ask him? [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 00:08:00 02-04-2003
No thanks. I don't like this guy. Oviously [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 22:19:00 02-04-2003
OKay, I did it. I also mentioned that I have the backing of the YPN team. [addsig]
Posted by MoX on 06:22:00 02-05-2003
And? Did he already answer? And what exactly did you ask? [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 11:10:00 02-05-2003
My message was something like this
"Me, and the rest of the YPN administrative team, would like to know why you keep changing usernames and e-mail addresses." No reply yet. I hope you guys don't mind that I added you in there, but I didn't want to make it look like I was alone in this. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 17:12:00 02-05-2003
if you don't get a reply till this weekend, I'll ask him too. I've done quite much with that guy in the past, and already talked much with him. Maybe he'll listen to me
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 23:53:00 02-05-2003
I'm sure he'll listen to you more than he will me. In his latest post he called me dumb, kust goes to show you how much I'm liked by him :-P [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 19:47:00 02-06-2003
lol, that sounds you're in love with him! Maybe even as much as I am with Smerdy!!
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 23:14:00 02-06-2003
No, not as much as you and Smerdy. Mainly he just really, really gets on my nerves.

No word. It's up to you. [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 20:28:00 02-11-2003
ok, I'll write that guy a mail in a few mins/hours.
