well im f^cken sick and tired of listening how MS is a bad monopolistic gigant that will eat out the world.
it is, but what about others???
after all you'll have to agree that microsoft brought us systems, that even non-computer oriented people can use.
just think about it :
when i've got my first computer (somewhere in 1991) i was one of 3 people in my city that had one. (the other two were programmers).
And after the Win95 revolution )) it became common for everybody to have a computer. Why? Because you can write documents, draw, get/send e-mail... And thats a lot of stuff for common people.
And who brought that???
Microsoft.

after all, it wasn't Microsoft who invented the user-friendly, graphical operating system. neither was Microsoft alone responsible for the IT revolution.

Xerox was the first company to develop a graphical os, which was then "copied" by Apple (they were the first ones who got this popular) which in turn was "copied" by Microsoft.

and yes, what about others? i don't like any big, monopolistic giant, even if they might have brought good stuff too.

McDonalds brought fast food to the entire world. it probably wasn't their idea but they made it a prospering business. and it's a good thing, isn't it, now everyone can buy a hamburger at McDonalds, drink a coke and eat fries in a childish atmosphere for the same price all over the world, even a bushman could if he had enough money.

that's nice isn't it? but it's not entirely positive!

ok, when I first used a PC I only had M$ DOS, I think it was 4.01 or something. Anyways, then windows 3.1 came, with the crappiest GUI I've ever seen. Even the console apps looked better!
M$ didn't bring up a revolution, and neither Windown$ is easier to use than Linux anymore. That is a old story that ppls like to pick up when they try to argument against Linux. Linux is (at least Mdk) easy to use, and also looks _much_ better than window$, even if window$ integrates that FisherPrice GUI.
imo, M$ is the biggest code-copy-company, because they haven't created a _single_ program from their own idea. if you think there is one, go search for it and tell us, I bet there are 0, none, null, nill, zero!

erm, btw, I like McDonald's BigMac The fires also aren't bad

If you don't like their products, that's one thing--but that's no reason to get violent. Besides, Microsoft has done nothing immoral.

there was an aritcle in the SCIAM not long ago about the history of computing... There they had some pics of a computer with a UI developed at the Xerox PARC in the early 80's... well, it looked suspiciously like win 95

really, most nowadys standard ui elements were invented there... it's quite amazing

::sticks head out for MS (for some unknown reason::

OK, Xerox invented the GUI, Jobs stole it, MS got it from them... so what?

Every idea is taken from some other one. There are very few truly original ideas (jesus, I sound like the guy from a beautiful mind)... Standing on the shoulders of giants isn't just a saying - it's the way things work...

you go into a store and steal some food... that's how it works ... sure :/

I think you are wrong on 3 of 3 here. Word processing first appeared on the Commodore, and the Apple before M$ picked it up. As for drawing, it was on the Apple first. And for email, that was an invention of your common, down to earth unix programmers. While we are on the subject, the net was *not* invented by m$. again, unix. (This is the reason for the / in urls)

Cmon guys. We all know abnout microsoft. it just doesnt care about stability, speed and cost. First if you need stable ms-os in your pc you need to get FAST one. Second. Older versions or not server ones are unstable. Of course windows is a good os. it has easy to use envioronment. nice tools and lots of software. But for ppl who likes to have pc on 24/7 it's a paint in the ass. you must restart him atleast 3times a week . if doing some instaling configuring you'll have to restart it 5-7 times a day.

KaGez: well then your choice of software (and food) is not much more than a matter of taste. it's like saying green is an ugly color and somebody else says it isn't.

however, I do also consider the market effect and certain ethical aspects.

also I don't believe that "stealing" an idea is wrong, it's not like stealing someone's property. I mean come on, the free software movement is about dissing intellectual property.

what I meant by noting the fact about xerox and apple is that Microsoft didn't invent it at all.

Btw, I'm not getting violent, as certain people imply (microsoft bashing, kicking the carp out of etc). But IbYdI was talking about how good Microsoft is.

Microsoft has done nothing unethical.

As for intellectual property, there's nothing wrong with it--however, certain things (such as the general style of software interfaces and concepts rather than implementations) cannot be considered IP because of their general nature.
