Anyone know where I can get a messageboard for my website that is _easy_ to install? Note: I do not know php, mysql, asp, or any other web development.
I want a messageboard that has users, not just anonymous people.

phpbb is really easy to install _if_ you have a mysql database and php installed correctly. you don't need any special knowledge for that tho. just follow the simple and straightforward instructions for installing the board.
phpbb is available at www.phpbb.org

There is also a CGI\Perl script that I have. phpBB is much better looking though.

Any free providers with sql n the other stuff you need for php?
Posted by dxprog on 08:59:00 06-02-2002
None I know of. I might be able to port the phpBB code to asp (aspBB?) and you could use brinkster. They are very good.

go get a portal thing called "Xoops" 'I think it was @ http://www.xoops.org). It also contains a msg board.

I take that back. I downloaded phpBB. It would probobly take a year or more to port that thing to ASP. Forget I said that.

You should be able to write your own messageboard in far less time...

Posted by dxprog on 09:24:00 06-03-2002
Yeah you're right. I started one once. It was a total flop though. I didn't have any kind of structure in mind. Maybe I should work on one again.

and, writing a message board that has less bugs than phpBB isn't too difficult

Posted by fsvara on 23:11:00 06-03-2002
yeah, i think it's gotten better lately (with 2.0...) tho...
Posted by dxprog on 00:22:00 06-04-2002
Yowie will be much better than phpBB.

Hope so too...
But looking at the project section and the new sasq, I am very confident

Here's a list of ASP message boards. http://www.aspin.com/home/webapps/bbs

bah, who in the world needs ASP msg boards?

people running IIS?

people running IIS with asp?

People who want to have a message board but don't want to pay leg for a PHP enabled site. ASP is just as good as PHP. Actually my ASP powered site runs faster than the YPN itself. So there. No flame wars please. And no comments about servers either.

I doubt that. If the YPN appears slow, that's certainly not because of php but because of the connection(s) between you and japan.
Posted by dxprog on 07:06:00 06-05-2002
You know, the YPN would be a lot better if the whole thing weren't about what is better or who thinks what is better. Let's just say for the sake of the argument that ASP and PHP run about the same. Just like ASP and JSP or PHP and JSP are probobly run about the same.

whoever that anonymous is:
2 post is enough
anyways, the YPN's site is slow because of the 2 reasons:
1) you are far away from japan, where the server is, but the server is on a _very_ fast line, so probably rou connection isn't good enough
2) sasquatch2 isn't really the fastest I admit... Sasquatch3 will be loads faster than 2
and, you don't pay for "php enabled sites", as svara said... I think _if_ you would pay for either a PHP enabled server or a ASP enabled server, you'll pay more for the ASP one... just a guess...

/me bets "Anonymous" was sacah
Posted by dxprog on 23:54:00 06-05-2002
I didn't say ASP was better. I personally perfer it. PHP is OK. It's just I never was able to get it working properly on my computer. It worked, but if I tried to do forms it would say that there were undefined variables. I say all the SSS languages are equal. Now if you start talking about VBScript that is really stupid. JavaScript is a zillion times better. PHP closely resembles JScript.

where did I say that you said that ASP is better? if I did so, sorry...

im confused, who did you fool dxprog, and what did you fool them with?
Posted by dxprog on 16:30:00 06-08-2002
I fooled KaGez. He said Quote:maybe you oculd login next time before posting like I was you. If you're still confused look at the last post on the second page.

Geez, KaGez. Took you a while to recover from that. Oh, I'm one heck of a prankster aren't I.

hehehe...
I agree, I prefer ASP to PHP, the only problem is that there are very few servers that support asp(even pay servers), but there are loads that support PHP, so at the moment i'm working on learning php...
btw, if your using windows and you can't get php/perl/mysql set up then try using phpdev(www.firepages.com.au) because it has a set of programs all ready for using and downloadable in one package.
Posted by dxprog on 01:29:00 06-10-2002
Brinkster supports ASP and it's free on top of it. That's what I use and I love it.
[addsig]
Posted by biopak on 02:30:00 06-10-2002
brinkster is probably the best asp server around, Thats the only one i use..
But i would still like to learn PHP just so that I know it.
Posted by dxprog on 08:12:00 06-10-2002
That's the same reason I wanted to learn PHP. Also I'm writing a theme for the new YPN and KaGez wants the scripts in PHP.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 15:45:00 06-10-2002
I never said anything about themes in PHP format... anyways, wait till the engine is out, or get CVS and learn how to use it and help us

Posted by sacah on 18:10:00 06-10-2002
themes in XML!

I want WAP and a shout box
Posted by dxprog on 02:40:00 06-11-2002
sacah: XML? I don't think that would be suitable considering it's a database thing.
KaGez: Yeah, I'll download CVS this Saturday. Though I will need to include some scripts. Like getting document titles or news, unless you plan on setting a bunch of global variables or whatever the equivalent of the ASP Session object is.
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 05:13:00 06-11-2002
Okay. I downloaded CVS, now I need to know the various addresses to get it setup.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 19:58:00 06-11-2002
we have a API to obtain news like you said, and for most other things.
Anyways, you don't need any addresses to setup CVS afaik. You need a CVS server address to download file tho.
And, for sasquatch's cvs, you will also need a ssh-1 or 2 key.
If you have all these, give me your public key, and I will try to give you access for the CVS.
