i think you should change first page:
* add nice random background img that makes you think of nice things.
* add some random text-quotes with nbice thoughts
* offer to remember nice times.
there are too many of unhappy ppl in this comunity.
Posted by Peter on 13:28:00 03-15-2002
sounds cool.. hey people, let's all be happy! we've got quotes already.. I'm a bit unsure about background images. and what's the third thing?
Posted by MoX on 14:11:00 03-15-2002
Here are my most wanted improvements:
Weekly or at least monthly changing poll
More 'life' on the front page (more recent news and stuff). Save the forums the page seems frozen most time...
A project section (I don't know what you guys are doing, but it just can't take this long to get this done)
...and yes, even as I dislike the idea of background images, some nice icons, pics and stuff would make me feel more comfortable here
As I am watching the ypn develope for some months now, I think I found the main reason why all these nice things weren't accomplished yet. It's probably that there are too few ppl working on this site. How many are there who actively work on this page, technically or contributing content?
I guess it's mainly the good ol' ypn-crew that does all the work. Well, are you really going to run the whole thing (I remember somebody even called it a movement) with a group of some three people???
I for example would really like to contribute or work for the improvement of the ypn, and I'm not alone with it.

MoX:
your suggestions and observations are correct. I'm especially concerned about the activity on the front page.
"I don't know what you guys are doing, but it just can't take this long to get this done"
So damn true. I'm very very very sorry. What I was doing was falling in love, getting a girlfriend, losing that girlfriend and pondering upon it the rest of the time. That is, when I didn't do homework.
I promise to work on it this weekend.
If this group of three people would really work actively, it would be possible to run the site well. But for me it's impossible to put down so much time, and I think it's the same for Fabs and Svara.
When the projects section is up, we could perhaps make the website a project, so that a team would be assigned to keep it going.

/me feels sorry for Peter.
I also agree on the suggestion to make the front page look more active than those "Latest updated 1994-01-05" pages New polls wouldn't be that hard either, it doesn't take more than a week for all the usual addicts to vote, so we don't need to have them up for so long.

Sorry 'bout your (ex-)girlfriend. I know such bad times too well...But that's the fscking way it goes and you get over it sooner or later.
Back to the topic
Making it some sort of project would be ideal. There should be about five or six ppl working constantly on the site, so that it is enough when they spend only a small amount of their time. Choosing people skilled and serious enough for those jobs should be done by the ypr, which should remain as the "managers" of the whole thingy.
I'm looking forward to every change, cause cool as the ypn is right now, it could be much cooler still!

Thanks for your support, guys .
The project model would be nice, yeah. The most important part is that we can work well together with the others in that team and that they have enough time/engagement.

CotM coder of the month. i think it is wrong. making it Contest of the month would have much more sence.
Contests. we have curently:
C/C++
Basic/VB
Assembly
Gnu/Linux
Webdev
Os-dev
sections. by modifying them to logical ones we would have:
1.C/C++
2.Basic
3.Asm
4.Webprograming
5.WebDesigning
6.Ideas
There are types of contests. Nice huh? ok nobody can participate in all of them. so the CotM(coder) is one who gets most of points totaly per one month.
You can get points from 6 competitions.
C,Basic,Asm,WebPrograming,WebDesigning,Ideas.
Each compo has no common with other one. So how does lets say asm competition works?
1. First day of month comes.
2. In first page primary objective comes for competition. Lets say graphic effect.
3. More details like requirements/raiting rules.
4. You click special button to get full description of what you need to do, lets say fire effect. then a time count starts.
5. you hury and do your code.
6. you submit a code or somehting. and timecount stops.
7. you forget this competition till lats day of month when results are shown.
8. results calc: (orginality*code_look)/(size*time_taken_to_write)
9. then you get tmp_points acordnig to the place you are in.
10. then tmp_points of all competiotions are being sumed and one who has most of tmp_points is CoderOfTheMondth
(participating in all contests is better then participating in one)

Web programming and Webdesign is closely linked so our "Webdev" section is totally logical..
Posted by kpyro on 18:54:00 03-15-2002
You guys could also make the site a little more welcoming to new users...
Posted by Govtcheez on 19:12:00 03-15-2002
How about ditching this version of phpBB for the new one?
Posted by fsvara on 20:44:00 03-15-2002
very nice idea, but yowie is supposed to be right around the corner...
Posted by Govtcheez on 20:49:00 03-15-2002
What's yowie? Is that the replacement for the boarsd you guys were talking about earlier? Do you have any screenshots?
Posted by nonama on 21:05:00 03-15-2002
" Web programming and Webdesign is closely linked so our "Webdev" section is totally logical.." its ok. but for contest. its two tot dif things. designing is art. not every programer can do that. and programing is logics not every artist can do that. logical?
Posted by Peter on 19:54:00 03-16-2002
Actually, the Young Designers Network, which is coming up, is for graphical designers. But the webdev section is about designing frontends and coding backends, since they are usually quite linked.
Posted by KaGez on 00:49:00 03-17-2002
WTF is that young designers network?

Posted by Peter on 12:01:00 03-17-2002
it's not the "f" actually. i've thought about it for a while, noticing that there is a designer scene where people are into graphical design only. usually there is no programming involved for pure designers. I though that as it's such a big area, it'd be better to have a twin of YPN cover it, instead of making it a sub-group to programming.
one of my classmates is supposed to make the site. but that's more of a long-term thing.
Posted by fsvara on 12:42:00 03-17-2002
could you keep us up to date about that, please? i remember you telling me about it quite a long time ago.. has anything happened/progress been made?
Posted by Peter on 14:13:00 03-17-2002
Nothing, really. He's done a basic design but he had a lot of other things to do and I didn't say we were in a hurry. I'll talk to him and see if he's still interested, and if he is, ask him to do it then .
Posted by KaGez on 05:29:00 03-18-2002
If not, I'll do it!
yes, I'm _very_ interested, since I'm a graphics nerd, in programming as well as in other ways. I love to create pics on the comp, or just fool around with them! So, if he isn't interested in it anymore, I'll help out

Posted by Peter on 07:06:00 03-18-2002
Great! you can help out anyway, I'll ask him today. he'll need to put together a team.
Posted by KaGez on 09:43:00 03-18-2002
ok
I'll be in the chan most of the time, so give me a note if you've asked him

Hey Peter (and to all other ypn-ppl responsible for the site(if you exist))!
Wouldn't it be nice to add a comment-feature to the poll? It'S not the first time that I feel urged to comment on my vote.
Anybody here thinking the same?
[addsig]
Posted by Peter on 18:34:00 03-25-2002
That's a nice idea.. but wtf is that "if you exist" thing?
Posted by MoX on 20:51:00 03-25-2002
Hehe...to you, Peter and all the other ppl responsible for the ypn-site...if those other ppl exist.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 02:17:00 03-26-2002
1.) Fabs is responsible for the YPN too (and I think fabs is much more responsible for it thatn Peter )
2.) Svara is also reponsible
3.) I am too
So, they exist

Posted by MoX on 06:46:00 03-26-2002
Heh...Good to know that!
So feel like the post was also directed to you guys. It's just that I always here only Peter talking about any website development for ypn...
And btw: I feel responsible for the ypn, too

--> I feel responsible for the ypn, too
Don't worry - it's not your fault - the feeling'll pass soon,
Posted by MoX on 13:51:00 03-26-2002
Don't know...I'm really convinced that this is a cool place. So I'm quite motivated to improve it even more, as far as that is possible to me!

Posted by Peter on 19:07:00 03-26-2002
What I didn't get was why you said "if they exist"... Just because we're not perfect, we do exist. I'm always happy when people appreciate and like the community and wants it to progress, but I can't understand why some people always complain.. that's not for you Moxx, but anyway.. just wanted to say this.
Posted by Govtcheez on 19:12:00 03-26-2002
I think you read into that too much, Peter... I think Mox meant that he didn't want to offend people he forgot.
Posted by MoX on 20:29:00 03-26-2002
Hey Peter calm down! Govt is absolutely right here!
I just said "if they exist" because I did not know if you are the only one doing the web stuff here. That was no complaint!
I just did not know whom to speak to so I said "Peter" and then I thoght "perhaps he's not the only one" and said "and all the others". But I wasn'T sure if there are any others so I added "if you exist"...
It's a bit difficult to explain, but perhaps you now get what I wanted to say. Don't feel offended or urged in any way please!
[addsig]
Posted by Govtcheez on 20:33:00 03-26-2002
Yeah - Peter, I'm the only one that would intentionally offend you
Posted by Peter on 21:03:00 03-26-2002
hehe, it's ok, I didn't mean to sound that offended ... now i get it, anyway .

I thought this messageboard was to be replaced totally. What happened to your "Yowie!" or however it was called? Is it still a running project or will the current message board remain? (Don't feel urged please, I just want to know...)

As even our channel topic has indicated since this morning, the Yowie! project is running again, me and KaGez are working on it. We are at quite an early stage atm, we'll have to revive my existing, old code.
It's not impossible that we might accept help later on, when we got started.
Posted by MoX on 11:45:00 04-04-2002
I'm really glad to hear that. I would also like to help you out, but I don't know if my poor PHP/MySQL skills will be sufficient.
It's really a pleasent surprise to see things in here recently evolve this fast. Keep up the good work, guys!
