Well, there isn't any one language for making software. BASIC would be one of the easiest to start with, though I'm sure Smerdyakov will recommend Haskell (I can't say anything about it as I don't know anything about it).

start learning perl ... you can stil make everything with perl and its free and easy

Perl is probably the worse choice of first language if you are not into *NIX.
I would myself recommend Python.

Be sure to find out how much programming experience each person has before listening to his advice....

Hey, at least I mentioned Haskell. And exactly how long have you been programming? I've been programming for since I was 11 (that makes 6 years), and you're only 5 years older than me.

That makes roughly 5 years more experience
But dxprog, be sure not to take things Smerdyakov say too seriously.

I try not to, but somedays it just isn't easy

I've been programming for roughly 15 years (since I was 6). I've completed "release quality" versions of several non-trivial personal projects, I have a bachelor's degree in computer science, and I've had 5 different paid programming jobs. If, knowing this, you really think it is not valid for me to question the appropriateness of your contradicting my advice, then you should learn some more and send a note back in time to yourself now warning of your error.

Since you were 6?
Why?
Didn't you have Lego or GI Joes to play with?

kinikiv: Hee hee.
Smerdy: That doesn't make you a very young programmer, you know. What did you start off with, Logo?

I must agree that it was an abnormal passtime for a 6-year-old.

6 is actually later than evidence indicates that it's good to start learning to code. You should be wishing your parents had started teaching you programming/encouraging you to learn it when you were 4ish, instead of trying to mock me for having been in that sort of situation.

No, I wasn't intent on mocking you. I simply stated that it is abnormal for someone of that age to begin learning programming. Very few Americans can even read at that age; some are still learning to speak at the age of 4.

"must agree that it was an abnormal passtime for a 6-year-old."
Abnormal? Much more than that. I think of it as sad. When I was 6 I watched Seaseme Street (the good ol' days!), I played with Lego, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars toys, computer games and ate glue. LIke most Chinese kids, my mom made me do excessive math and must. While my dad and brother kept torturing me with sports.
Lego was the best though. I made some of the best looking vehicles you could imagine.

We are not mocking you, we just find it odd. Instead of building stuff and playing with your Army Pete, you sat in front of the computer and typed.
You've been doing it until now, which leads me to the conclusion of a quote said in the movie Independence Day, "As you can see, they don't let us get outside much" - Alien Scientist.

I loved Legos. And now my younger siblings enjoy them (one of whom is 6).
