General YPN >> lollipoping on dead links
Posted by MoX on 09:45:00 02-12-2002
Hey!

Some of you ypn guys should take care of any dead links. Recently I tried to read the 'Advanced Coding II' stuff in the C/C++ section but it's a dead link.

Don't know how many other dead links are around on the site but they definitely lollipop!

Posted by MoX on 09:48:00 02-12-2002
Hmmm...that lollopopping stuff definitely lollipops, too!
Posted by Peter on 09:53:00 02-12-2002
I think lollipop sounds cute! it's not censorship but a joke
Posted by Peter on 09:54:00 02-12-2002
btw, I will mail Bandi or something. good suggestion, we should have a crawler that checks for deadlinks on demand and mails their authors .

peter: why cant codesnipps,tuts... be submited directly on ypn?
Posted by MoX on 11:14:00 02-12-2002
I agree with IbYdl

Surely you won't have indefinite space, but those text-files don'T take up too much.

So the YPN-site would become a nice database of tutorials and other docs
Posted by KaGez on 13:17:00 02-12-2002
but it will take up much more bandwidth then now. And, our bandwidth is limited ... :/

Pretty soon (after the actual website & system is done) I'll do a script which lets you upload files to a server - thus you won't need to have an own webspace to add tutorials.

maybe people should redefine the word soon
now seriously : you cant expect to have a good code/tut base when every tut... you open is on some kind of free webspace filled with ads.
since i for example close the site when i see it haves popup ads.
Posted by MoX on 21:23:00 02-12-2002
I'm quite sure, that there'll never be a big tutorial and code collection on ypn as long as all the docs are stored elsewhere. There'll always be deadlinks and I for myself would like to have access to all the older docs without being afraid that they are gone tomorrow...
Posted by fsvara on 23:52:00 02-12-2002
if we had webspace... lots of it... and bandwith... lots of it... for free...

yeah, we could do a lot with that
Posted by IbYdI on 06:42:00 02-13-2002
i can offer 100+ mb on www.webmaster.org.yu
no popups...
now 100 mb can be atleast 100-300 pages.
interested? [addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 12:43:00 02-13-2002
that'd be cool, do you have any more info about it?
Posted by KaGez on 13:38:00 02-13-2002
heh... how fast is the line? I mean, if there are even 1000s of GBs, if the line is slow for everybody outside Yugoslavia or the surroundings it's just useless ...
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 18:10:00 02-13-2002
yep, that's something i'd like to know, too

anyway, some other stuff:
1) whom does the webspace belong to?
2) how reliable is it?
3) will we get _full_ access to it?

number 3 is the knock out condition...
Posted by IbYdI on 20:23:00 02-13-2002
it belongs to my friend from montenegro.
he is a web designer.
he has 500mb there, but since he owes me (and lot) i can ask him to give us some webspace, and he'll surely do that.
I dont have the exact data, but i think its not slow, and he'll let us use it freely.
if youre interested i can ask him and arangee it all.

just a suggestion:
I think moving to SF would be _much_ safer, since we know that we can trust SF, and we know all the ocnditions on SF, and they also have proper servers and equipment, and a almost guaranteed 24h uptime. We don't know who "That Guy"'s firend is, we don't know if we can trust him, and nothing.
_If_ we move, I'd consider SF first.

/me offered help. dont wont it. ok.

kagez: please stop with posts inspired with hate.
im not going to discuss with you any further.
since (i quote)

C'mon everybody! Cleansing breaths! Out with the bad air, in with the good. Out with the bad air, in with the good. Out with the bad air, in with the good.

That's better, huh?
Posted by KaGez on 14:05:00 02-15-2002
GovtCheez: Don't get me wrong. I dunno what I did to "That guy", but it looks like he begins to fall to the same level as nor (aka moondude). I never had anything against him, except that he played our Jesus Christ ....

"That Guy": I've never said anything against you, and if you feel attacked, I can't help you .... I think what you got is called Inferiority complexes, if you know what that means

All I said was:
"SF is much more secure, we know them much better than somebody else we've never met, or who never approved something." That's all! OK, I don't trust you, that's true, so what? is that a reason for trying to argue with somebody? I never wanted to argue with you. But now I don't even wanna talk to you anymore.... I dislike it to talk with lamers that play Jesus Christ.
Have a nice day!

KaGez: would you please stop calling IbYdI "that guy"? It's not harder than copy-pasting. And I think people deserve to be called by whatever nickname they got, instead of being referred to as "hey you" or "that guy".

We don't need to move to the server that IbYdI offers. We can just let people keep their documents there, at least until there's a better choice. How much space does SF give anyway?

IbYdI: thanks for your offer.

Make peace guys, let's have flower power, peace, love and understanding!
Posted by Peter on 08:17:00 02-19-2002
Btw, I'll change the link as soon as I can access the database. Might be school has blocked another port or something..
Posted by KaGez on 12:44:00 02-19-2002
Peter: Theoretically SF gives you unlimited space ... theoretically ... same with the bandwidth.

i thought i read something about 500mb hard diskspace quotas and 250mb "soft"...

However, we'd need to put a little sf link if we have our site hosted there on the page... not a big prob tho, imho.

Anyway, I know some h07 people.. they host some cool things like www.thinknerd.de and www.hackles.org, too.... perhaps we could ask them?

i guess ibydi is right about "community in community" if we move to sf, tho i don't see it as a problem as sf is quite universal...
Posted by KaGez on 12:32:00 02-20-2002
what is the problem with "community in community" ? I don't quite get it :/
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 12:44:00 02-20-2002
there is no "problem" imo, but if ypn was meant to be like sf (which it isn't, but some people said that...) it would indeed be strange.
Posted by MoX on 22:40:00 04-17-2002
I found another two deadlinks and due to the fact that I only tried these two I expect there are a _lot_ more of them...

"Classes in PHP" by KaGez in the WebDev sec
"Permutations" by abhi in the C/C++ sec

Please add some feature for deadlink reporting to sasq! (And please do something about reported deadlinks after that ) [addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 23:33:00 04-17-2002
as we're on a new server with lots of resources, people will upload their tutorials here in the future. That means: No more dead links
Posted by MoX on 01:56:00 04-18-2002
_VERY_ good! [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 22:26:00 04-18-2002
when we're talking about links:
ppls should stop to post sections of a home page and instead post the root page of the site....
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 23:10:00 04-18-2002
agreed.
Posted by KaGez on 17:57:00 04-19-2002
I said that because certain persons (dunno the names now) do this... everybody who feels like he did it, please take these few seconds and remove those links you submitted (if they are not pointing on the home of the site) or make them point to the site.
And, for all of you who are going to submit links:
Please check with the search engine first if the link already exists. Hopefully we'll have sych a function in sasquatch in the near future.
Thank you for your coorperation

Though, some of those sites are hard to find your way around, postin to the root on a page like PlanetSourceCode, how are we suppose to know which code.page the links suppose to be about?
Posted by fsvara on 21:43:00 04-19-2002
that's a good point. but as a potential revision for the rating system could mean a bonus (.05 maybe) per submitted link, idiots could just submit every single page and earn points that way. that is actually one reason against giving bonus points for links. but on the other hands, good links are a really cool think that should be rewarded (with points) IMO.
Posted by sacah on 17:18:00 04-20-2002
For just submiting the link they dont get any points, but dont they get points when ppl rate their link/tut etc?

PS
If someone submits 40 links to dif pages on same site, ppl will get very annoyed with them, rate them low, with bad comments.

Posted by fsvara on 21:56:00 04-20-2002
well, atm links don't get the user points. not for the rating, and no "bonus".
Posted by KaGez on 10:59:00 04-21-2002
maybe we should think of some system or filter to handl this problem ...
[addsig]
Posted by sacah on 16:39:00 04-21-2002
Mabye gtboypn should just pick 4-5 ppl each month, and every one polls who they think, noone argues with the 4-5 you pick. Ifthey do, just dont respond to them, then u dont need this points and filterin for posted links etc
