Linux >> Linux in the house!

Wow, this is amazing, we now have 3 PCs running Linux in the house. Only my sisters PC is still running windows. They are all connected through ethernet and my PC routes them all online. Even my mum is a happy Linux user now =)

I also wanna do that .. My brother wants to switch to Linux , but some things (Hardware) are not supported under Linux , so he can't ... and my father doesn't even think about switching to Linux ... that dickhead says that there is no better OS than Winblowz !!! looza !!

kagez,
what hardware does tyour brother have that isn't supported?

from my (limited) experience, if the version of Linux you get doesn't have support for it (wonder how likely) then you should be able to get updates to support it... but then again, I am limited in my knowledge right now...

He uses a compaq , and it has a HEAVILY modified version of the i810 chipset in it .... I tired to get it run some times , but without success ... drivers are also no available from Compaq , so there's no way

I'm thinking about buying Linux, what would you say is the very best version of linux? (I thought SuSe looks pretty kewl)
Posted by fsvara on 22:44:00 06-08-2001
ya, suse is good, and mandrake, too.

suse is at version 7.2 now, brand new. mdk is 8.0.

you could get the isos, instead of buying it, tho

Your first distro should always be a RH based one . Mdk is the best I think . It's the easiest to use , and most software you need for your allday-work is included .
And , when you install it , you should choose GNOME workstation , cuz GNOME is much more stable (also faster) then KDE . But that's at last your decision .
So far

Why a redhat-based one?

Debian RULEZ... And yes, I know debian is harder to install, but what about Storm, Libranet, Corel, Progeny...? That's all Debian based.

And SuSE 7.2 has just come out some days ago, so get that, it's the most up to date one. I am not too sure if it is out in other countries than germany, tho...

Now, distros NOT to get:

Windows-stuff, that is, NO Lanthan, NO Icepack. NO umsdos one. NO Redhat (redhat sux).
then, the most beginner-unfriendly distros are probably
-Slackware
-Plain Debian.

I guess I would get myself Progeny, if I was you. I heard good stuff about it, it is very up to date, apt based, and beginner-friendly.

Could someone tell me what the hell that Progeny Debian is ?? I've heard of it though , but dunno what it is .
Anyways , I'd preffer Mandrake 8.0 for beginners , because Mdk is just the easiest and you can install it in almost ANY language ....

YES, definitly!!! i installed it, its user friendly, has a nice graphical interface, and you can install it into a windows folder or thats what they call it.... but...==--> dramatic, i wanted to first give linux a partition on the HDD, and something was wrong, when i clicked ok, it gave me an error... so i clicked it once again, too trie again... same error, same the next 2 times... so i installed into a windows folder... now i start windows, look at my C: drive, and it tells me i have 35GB total, and 15 GB left... but i have a 45 GB drive... and b 4 i had like 26GB left... it just made me wonder... also, is there any way you can UNDO partitions? like join them back together?
Posted by KaGez on 02:24:00 06-16-2001
uuuhhhhmmm ... no
make a backup of all your Data you want to keep and re-partition your whole Drive =) That's the easiest way to fix partition problems

well, try partition magic. i know, it's for win, but it's one of the only reasons i'm keeping windows.

Really useful for installing linux =)
Posted by robost86 on 12:11:00 06-18-2001
I use Partition Magic from a boot disk, so I could make it without Windows...
Posted by KaGez on 14:38:00 06-18-2001
I don't trust these little proggys .... they could also scandisk up your HDD in matter of seconds
