Recently the idea for a Java learning group came up. I think learning groups in general would be a good feature to add to YPNgine. My idea is something like this:
One person would run\teach the group. They would periodically put up lessons\tutorials. There could be a Q and A section for people to ask questions and the "teacher" could then answer the questions.
If you have any other ideas (or don't want it) please say so.

I don't.
Any idea that leads to one person getting more work than the others is doomed to fail.
With a community this size that is...

It could be more than one person.

I think YPN could be the teacher, ie, YPN teaching YPN.

That's very optimistic thinking ItinitI but you should know what YPN is not a single being but it's made of individu(h)als which might not always share the same sense of community....
For example: I would be please to, once in a while, answer questions about programming or all sort of subjets but I will never commit myself into writing lessons, exercices or tutorials. While it's not uninteresting, I simply don't have the time.
And still, I consider I'm still quite available. Many future members will only be looking for a place to hang out on a forum to brag and show off (and no, it's not actually targeted at anybody currently reading this, honest!)

Okay, let's drop the idea then. I thought maybe that's what some of you people were shooting for, but I guess I was wrong (typical, huh )

Well, I had thought that perhaps an already written text which is freely availiable online could be used rather than writing our own texts[Why re-invent the wheel?], such as The Java Tutorial. And a learning group could be more a supplement area for joint projects, and maybe specific questions and such.

I have nothing against the implementation of the idea...
I just think there far from enough people to make it work.
A person self-designing itself to be available to answer questions related to a particular subject might not be an unworkable alternative but I think people asking questions prefer an informal setting instead of asking a question to a precise person, ie: a 'teacher'. Any system that remotely look like school is a risky thing.

We tried them in TPU. They didn't work.

I was going to create something like this on my site, I had the script for it and everything, but I decided not to.
I think with this idea we should have a board leading mini boards. The board would be the admin's admins. That being, KaGeZ, dxprog, and Peter. The mini boards would lead a single area, such as Java, and would be made up of 3 or more people. Just an idea.

For it to work, we would really need between 50 and 75 people using this site each day.

C_Rdd stole my line...

Why? These wouldn't be "year-round" groups, just "seasonal". You sign up for one of the available groups, and for the next couple months you learn. Then a new group, and possibly a new board steps in.

The current number of people active on this forum would sustain, 1, maybe 2 "mini-boards".
Keep in mind that only a limited percentage of the active member will participate in any kind of interactivity.

Thank you for disagreeing, it came with another point.
As we do this, we'd probably draw more of a crowd.

2 or 3 more user won't cut it!
YPN at its peek did not have that many active members either.

Even if we don't do a group like this here, I'm hoping to start one on my site. (When the base of the site is done.)
100 Posts! Yippee! Here's to ten thousand more!
