Which one do you like better? Why?
fabs

Hmmm, I gues on any other board, this would initiate a flame war.... =)

But hey, I prefer GNOME, it's just nicer to look at, not so windows-ish as KDE, the incond look better, The apps it comes with are better, the themes are better...
It's just better

I like KDE, only because GNOME always crashes on my system.

enlightenment is nice, but a little basic w/o a good menu system or a task ber

Everything but KDE ... Since version 2.1 KDE got sssoooooooooooo sllllooooooowwwwww ... hehe
Anyways , I preffer a combination of GNOME and some other Window manager than Sawfish ... Sawfish always screws up (
But never ask this on a public BIG board ... they'll all flame each other like svara said

Hehe...
Well, I think gnome KDE wars have become something on the user-side, the developers get along quite well, as i see it. There was even a GNOME conference where some KDE developers held speeches!

And the aRts sound daemon from kde is supposed to replace Esound, the nelightenmnet sound daemon in GNOME 2.0

hhmmm .. yeah , I also hear of that aRts stuff ... I dun like aRts very much though the e-sound deamon is a lightweight sound deamon , which you can't really say of aRts anyways , let's see how this stuff develops

lol
looks like fabs and me are not the only ones who think like that GNOME is also faster and Ximian gives you better opportunities to administrate your System (e.g. Red-Carpet , Setup-Tools)
that's why I like it ... and , one more reason :
I can place the manubars (aka teskbar) where I want it to be , and make as many of them as I like to and , the last reason is that GNOME was the first desk man I've met in Linux

I would recommend not using any.
Have you thought of a simple Windowmanager like IceWm?? I used it for quiet a long time. It's cool. It's amazing.
It's faster and smaller and imho better.

http://icewm.sourceforge.net

It's very stable and comfortable now.. there is also a wishlist and lot's of variants to configure it (I used to like this little ppp-status-applet which was automatically started and killed ;)

Have a nice day!

Noone forces you. Maybe just to see how to make a source package?? Or even to see how the developers did the X-things? Develop your C++- skills?
Who said that you have to?? It was just a recommendation.
Of course you see no difference between Gnome and pure X-Windows with IceWm on a 1GHz box with some thousand MB ram. But why should every window manager be developed for the latest boxes only?
I like it simple.

Have a nice time!

You hate me or something ?
Anyways , even if I would be still on my old Celeron466 box , I would use GNOME , even if it's slow . GNOME gives me everything I need , and GNOME comes with some cool games !
And , I can't program in C++ , so I can't develop my skills in it (now)
And , have I ever said that a Window manager should be designed for a Box like this one ?? This box was assembled for mostly gaming , nothing other . That's why I got the 1GHz and the GeForce . And now it also helpes me developing my OpenGL stuff . And for that I NEED a good Box . So , this Box was not expensive at all , so why should I use a crappy old box ??
