Ok, this was really an adventure I think everyone should hear about.
I wanted to have debian because Kagez and svara had told me about the great package management + I just felt adventurous. So the problem was mainly, that I only have a flat ISDN-connection which is a little slow for downloading the 3 debian cd-images. So I asked Kagez but his CD-burner was broken so things got a little more difficult. I then found an old hdd lying around in my room, 6GB. I gave it to kagez, he connected it to his PC, dloaded the images, copied them over and screwed his cdrom-drive back in
Today, Kagez then came to my place and we connected the hdd to my PC, got the data and were pretty much ready to install Only one more problem, bruning the cd... This tunred out much harder than we thought. We killed about 4 CDs and we still don't have that debian boot CD! For no reason, it just wrote junk to the disk
Ok, but we didn't wanna give up yet and so we dloaded the base-system, on floppies and installed it. Next surprise, for some reason this base system did not have a module for my RealTek ethernet card! So we had no chance of dloading the rest of the sys + dhcp didn't work...

hehe , but finaly we got that realtek card to run (dun ask me how) , got a internet connection , but then we got the next problem :
Since fabs only got a flat ISDN we couldn't DL that much of data apt-get wanted to install thanks to dependencies , so we had to give up and install the stuff from hand from the Debian Progeny CD (which btw lollipoped) . Finally we got the stuff we wanted installed . We wanted to install the stuff for compiling the ximian GNOME installer , but after we installed autoconf &co we realized that we will need GNOME installed to compile the installer (why the hell do you need GNOME installed to compile a GNOME installer ?? what is the installer for ??) , s owe were really stucked after working about 6 hours on it , so we gave up and I went home ... hehe ...
Was fun though

Nice story :)
I think one should have a few years exp with Linux before he/she does his first from-snatches-installation.
You sure need the Gnome-libs if you want to build a Gnome-installer (if that was the situation).
I tried to copy some RH7.0 boot-CD and it didn't work too. Maybe (if you used Nero too) Nero got problems with bootsector stuff.
Have a nice day!

Well, I guess we would have made it somehow but it would have taken us all night I guess

bandij:
doesn't it sound bit stupid ?? Look at this :
GNOME Installer
===============
This is for installing GNOME on your system
Requirements:
GNOME , GKT ....
doesn't this look a bit stupid ? not only a bit ... VERY ! Anyways , I have 1 year of Linux experience , and my system worx perfect (EVERYTHING !) , and it NORMALLY isn't difficult to install a Linux distro . But if you need some libs from the net to get your network-card to run it7s difficult, yes , don't you also think so ?? =)

Sure it's difficult if you need stuff from the net and your connection is not up yet :)
But the Gnome-installer thing does not sound stupid to me. I think it's not a selfextracting package like we all (I think) know it from Window$. It's program that depends on your Gnome-libs (version stuff etc).
I did not blame your Linux-administration skills. I said one should have experience for a from-snatches-installation. Not for distro.
I mean if you try to build your own system (think of init. it could be hard to make it yourself). How much do you know about the system internals after one year Linux? It's not just handling Linux. It's understanding, using and (maybe even)_living_ Linux to get a distro-less Linux working.
Why are you allways so offensive?
Have a great day!

I ask you the same Q ... why are you so aggressive ? Everytime I read your posts it sounds somehow aggressive to me . Can't we get along ?

I don't want to sound aggressive. I sometimes find it a bit stupid to not let one convince you (I say SOMETIMES. It's good to have clear opinions.).
Sure can we get along. It should not fail because of me.
Have a nice time!

I don't want a flame war with you either ... and , you can't convince me that I will need GNOME libs to install GNOME on my system I think you can convince only a very few with it ...
