Web Design >> Is this legal?
Posted by kenikov on 03:55:00 06-22-2003
I am not sure if this is in the right topic board but at least it's close.

at my site http://www10.brinkster.com/kenikov/guestbook.html

The guest book is designed by Tripod, and of course, tripod doesn't hesitate to but a ugly banner with a link to their site whenvever you use something of theirs.

So, I went to look at the Guestbook code, and replaced the banner and link, with an image of my own.

Is this legal? Will they somehow find out and take away my "Guestbook Priviledges"?

It may be. I'm sure there are free ASP guestbooks out there. Personal Web Server has one in one of it's examples. If you want I can mail it to you (you'd probably have to adjust some stuff). [addsig]

No thanks. Nice of you to suggest, nobody signs my guestbook though. There would be no point in doing that.

I could try and dig up that code also . We've been trying to install a new 40GB 7200 RPM HD . We tryed a gazillion times but the stupid thing turned out to be a bum, well, at least my dad and I think so.... [addsig]

Brain blast! I'm gonna use the Personal Web Server code for my Tripod site! Wait a second! Does Tripod support ASP?

No, I think tripod.co.uk supports PHP but not ASP. [addsig]

I'm sure you can most likly find a PHP replacement for a quest book somewhere.

Yes, you can find free ones out there, in ASP and PHP. What I would do, though, is create my own. For PHP, check out the tutorials at www.phpbuilder.com, or www.phpprincess.net (No, I'm not a girl, it's just a good site ) For others, check out www.webmonkey.com. They're easy to follow, and they don't take too long.

also, the php manual itself (http://www.php.net or http://www.zend.com) offers some great tutorials. The first few chapters helped me getting started with PHP

To answer the original question: Sure, it's probably legal, but it's up to tripod weather to remove it or not, and my guess would have to be that they're to lazy to do anything about it.

the best is you would go read the Terms of Usage (or whatever that was called). there should be plenty information about if you may do it or not. I think there's a lot more info than we humble people can give you
