First of all, never buy an operating system. Redhat 7.1 (Seawolf) is what I use and recommend to anyone just getting started with Linux. It can be downloaded for free from ftp://ftp.us.kernel.org
I am not sure of the exact directory so you will have to look around. You will want Disc #1 & #2 (which you need to burn to a CD) and the power tools CD if you really want it.

Mandrake ...
ftp://ftp.ne.jp (fastest ftp in Japan)

^pixel: i disagree. the distros have done so much work to bring linux into the masses (and we prolly wouldn't be using it right now without the distros), so why not support them?
i bought my debian from an online-linux shop, that way i can support the linux shop AND the distro (you donate to the debian project if you buy it).
i also bought my two SuSEs ion a library that has lots of linux stuff, that way, i can help keep the library linux-friendly and i support SuSE.
software should be free. make sure it stays free and buy it!
(that'll be a very confusing sentence for peeps who are not too much into the community)

Just buy a Linux book, and you get a copy of a distro and a book.

another way here in Japan is buying a Linux-magazine. They come out each month with a CDs of new distros
That's how I got rh7.1
