General YPN >> I GOT AN IDEA
Posted by Pitt on 17:29:00 05-08-2001
ok we are the young programmers well how about a buddie system we can let older programmers join the network and pair them up with young people that are in there relitive area! i think its a good idea my self but i needs some fine tuneing and most important thing members. and a way to link up the people and get them in touch. we could probably send out a message on cprogramming.com and maybe some message boards...what do you think?

ps sorry about the grammar and spelling im at school and the bell just rang for the next class

In theory, this is a great idea, but who said that older programmers are better? I know more about assembler than most of the people here, but I know almost nothing about Linux, and linux programming. I think it's better to learn from the guy who knows most of the specific subject. I just put my question on the messageboard or ask someone in the IRC chatroom if I want to know something.

I wouldn't want to integrate this onto this particular page but it seams like a good idea to me, to try and get in touch with programmers who live near you. Age however shouldn't matter because a 30 year old (old coder) might not be better than a 15 year old. Maybe the 30 year old started when he/she was 25 and because of having to work 10 hours a day to get around (something other than programming), he/she hasn't had the time of collecting much programming-experience.
However, the idea of meeting coders who live near to you is a good one. This doesn't need an extra system though, you could simply post in newsgroups for example. If you submit to comp.lang.c, you can be sure to get a response.
The reason why I don't want to integrate such a system into our page is that I fear it wont be used much, or maybe only 4 times a year or so.
Also, the way it is now, I think it's pretty cool, location hardly matters and that's one of the great thing the internet has brought us. Young Programmers living at totally different locations who would have probably never had the chance of exchanging their knowledge can do so here and now in this virtual community... and I think that's pretty cool.
For local stuff, as I said, newsgroups or of course the local newspaper, magazines etc.

yeah, i agree. also, i think that some people might not be comfortable with the thought of working with older people.... well, i wouldn't be uncomfortable, but letz say, my mom thinks that its not safe for me to interact with people that are like 25 or 30, for whatever reason... but otherwise, i think it is a good idea.... it'd be sweet if we could get like John Carmack or some other famous Coder to write some tuts, or to get him to answer us some questions...

lol, you're mom doesn't want you interacting with peeps older than 25??
Well, personally, I'm very comftable working with grown-ups but I don't see why I should because working with other teenagers is in most cases even more fun
... Famous coder visiting us... that would be nice... maybe we can arrange that, it depends highly on the person we ask though. If it's someone who loves the idea of ayoung programmer's web-community, we're in luck

lol, yeah, but we could really try to arrange that! like have John carmack, designer of Doom, Quake, and so on, write like a tut on "how to write a open gl or direct 3D Fancy Game engine " i'd really like that, and if we'd get a top proggi here that wites us a game engine tut, and expains how to use open gl with it, i'd start progging in c++ right away, dude!!!

lol, I think if we bug a person like that with teaching us opengl, he wont But if we already know a lot of OpenGL/DirectX ir whatever he might be in for writting some advanced stuff

lol, yeah, let me see if i can arrange something... it sometimes comes in handy if ur a PC gamer, and u have ur sources...

That would be nice but they might be too busyfor us. I mean they're pro's and i thinkthey would charge money for their tuts.

I dun think that everybody will take money for giving a bit of their knowledge . I think Sebi should ask him if he wats to do it , if yes it's good , if not then we don't need him
