Just out of interest - being as this forum is for "young programmers"...
Excatly what age are they classing as "young"??
How old are you people out there using this forum? (wondering if I'm a bit old or not??)
Craig
PS: I'm 20 for those that are curious

Well... Im 16...
Posted by dxprog on 09:44:00 01-15-2003
In our "statement" so-to-speak it says teens, so that's what I've always thought "young" to be. I'm 16 too.

I'm twenty, too, and still in here. Age does not really count. Would you say you are young? Yes? Then you are right here.
(The only problem is, that all these kiddies in here tend to go on your nerves )

You're twenty? Man, I thought you were a lot younger.

well, I'm 19, and as you can see I'm still quite active in here
If you feel young, you're young

I think everybody who wants to use this (great) community should

I'm 15, though I tend to use #ypn rather than the site, these forums are so damned annoying to navigate (Hint Hint)

ola, Govt around once again Nice to see you again
Anyways, I can only agree with dxprog. Moxx definitely did a good job there!

Yup, around every once in awhile - I've been back to work for 2 weeks now - should be around a little more often now...
I heard that when I turn 22 in July I'll be run off by a mob of pre-teen programmers with pitchforks and torches.
Posted by MoX on 03:19:00 01-18-2003
Yeah, I fear the same fate

Well, I'm 16, not that I've ever posted here but I intend to do that a lot in the future, for there are many unknown areas to explore in programming for me.

Well, welcome to the YPN, Schmokey! Enjoy your stay It would be nice to have another active person in here And if I can offer you a peice of advice, don't listen to Smerdayakov. What he says goes against what you just said :-|
[addsig]
Posted by Smerdyakov on 03:49:00 01-21-2003
And don't listen to dxprog, because he doesn't make any sense.
Posted by Schmokey on 20:39:00 01-21-2003
Hehe, I'll just see.
So you two are sort of rivals or something ?
Posted by dxprog on 22:19:00 01-21-2003
No. Smerdy and KaGez are rivals. It's just that Smerdy thinks that the only language anyone should use is this ML thing. There would be no "exploring unknown areas in programming" if you took his advice. THat's what I meant anyways.

Posted by Smerdyakov on 23:57:00 01-21-2003
I've never said that, and anyone who cares can look through old posts. There are plenty of different areas of programming/computer science to explore, but using C for applications programming is not one of them. That's basically what I've said in the past, with C replaced with the name of most any other popular programming language.
Posted by Smerdyakov on 00:01:00 01-22-2003
Oh, and learning lots of very similar programming languages is not "exploration" worth doing. (If you learn more than about 6 programming languages, then chances are at least 2 of them are so similar that you have wasted your time.) It is mostly just goofing off and isn't helping you learn anything. The worthwhile exploration is writing different types of programs, learning new algorithms and techniques, etc..
Posted by dxprog on 03:35:00 01-22-2003
True, but you still can't get a job doing programming using a language that's known to but a handful or two of people.
[addsig]
Posted by Smerdyakov on 07:45:00 01-22-2003
If you know representatives of all of the major programming paradigms and you can't learn a new language well enough to use in a day, then you shouldn't be hired in the first place.
Posted by Schmokey on 17:19:00 01-22-2003
Hmm, I can see that this forum is not very active, while it has many members. I mean, some last posts in categories are from like half a year ago.
Posted by dxprog on 23:25:00 01-22-2003
Yeah. Things will pick up in the summer when school lets out for everyone else (it doesn't make a difference to me ), or at least I imagine it will.

I think the most active times for the YPN are holidays. When you're going to school and wanna get something done, there (unfortunately) isn't much space left for other thigs except on weekends
But well, welcome anyways
