In the realm of "knowing it like the back of my hand":
1. VBasic (duh)
2. ASP
3. PHP
4. HTML
5. JavaScript
6. CSS
7. SQL (if that can be called a language)
Thing I don't know like the back of my hand
8. C\C++
Well, there you go.

There is really only one language worth knowing, but mentioning it around here seems to gain you a reputation as a zealot or something.

gian: Yes indeed and there is only 1 person to blame for that. Don't starting behaving like Smerdyakov please.
Posted by dxprog on 01:00:00 03-02-2003
Yeah, one Smerdy is bad enough

See, I didn't even have to say it.
If you try it, you will see. Making judgements based purely on preconceptions is never a good thing.
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 13:35:00 03-02-2003
We're human and we judge what we see.
Posted by gian on 15:52:00 03-02-2003
And that is a good reason to ignore sound advice given to you?
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 02:13:00 03-03-2003
Yes.
I learned things in life. I learned in school, in books, with friends, and with all kinds of things and people we trust.
... and then *boom*, that mostly random guy from IRC says that what I learned during the course of 10 years was wrong, should be thrown down the drain and traded for what he present like the one true secret for an happier life.
My past knownledge weighs more than any advice Smerdyakov can give me, all true they may be. And when that advice is radically different from what I believed in, it's pretty much normal that I react negatively. It'll take a while before I openly accept those advices.
Also, he has a rude way of delivering those advice. If some of my teammates in real life where behaving like that, I would have kicked him out. This is a subjective opinion, but I hold on it.

Yeah, what he said

I still don't see how you can completely dismiss it without even investigating the possibility that what he is saying might have some merit. Sure Smerdyakov can be very odd at times but he does have a point in this case.
Just as a side note, I've been having a lot of fun learning and using SML, so if you want confirmation from a (slightly) more rational person then I highly recommend that you try it.
Posted by gian on 13:36:00 03-03-2003
And Neu[Mann], what do you mean "past experience"? You use C#, so there must be something deeply troubling in your past
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 15:49:00 03-03-2003
I agree he is probably right and I never said I dismissed his ideas. I try never to completly dismiss ideas, even if it's pretty hard sometimes. I'm not just in a big hurry to investigate further. I can give plenty of reasons, more or less valid. And your opinion is welcome. That might someday bring me to try SML.
On your second message: I don't really use C# but I like advocating it as an alternative to C/C++.

Just don't be overly rational! I find that annoying to discuss with robots that examinate each and every of words of an arguments and take down opinions for the sake of arguing.
Posted by gian on 17:15:00 03-03-2003
You advocate C# as an alternative to C/C++? Yet you knock Smerdyakov for advocating SML as an alternative to C/C++? I'm not talking specifically to you, but to all those who have generally seemed to dismiss anything that doesn't fit into their warm and cozy existance and might require them to stop making tetris clones in VB for a second to actually learn a new and valuable skill.
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 01:34:00 03-04-2003
That's a pretty unfair comparison. I'm ready to advocate C# and give good reasons to use it or not to use it but I will NEVER make somebody feel like an idiot or inferior if that person don't follow my advice.
And I never regarded C# as the only language worth learning.
Posted by dxprog on 03:21:00 03-04-2003
Learning C seems like a valuable skill seeing that the rest of the commercial world uses it. THERE IS NOT ONE ALL POWERFUL LANGUAGE!!! That's my two cents.

Gee, I don't even say anything and I get called irrational!

It's because we love you.
I think this discussion has repeatedly been proven futile, so if anyone wants to continue it, find me on IRC.

not worth knowing''

This is definately something to keep in mind.

Yes, there are at least four. Contrary to popular belief, none of them
start with the letter `C', or even `J' for that matter.
Well, I guess we could consider Caml and JoCaml, but I think you catch
my drift.
Have a nice day.
