What's the deal the Sasquatch dev? I thought there was going to be a team to work on it. And when was all this decided?

Haven't you been to the channel? Hm.. The development has been going on with a team for a while now. And what decisions are you talking about?
Posted by dxprog on 06:57:00 05-11-2002
As I said before the way my AOL account is set I can't go on the channel. The other question was when was everyone picked. I say we need to do something other than the channel because people like me miss out on stuff like that. I really wanted to get on the dev team. That's why I was asking about apache so I could learn PHP and port what I had to that.

dxprog:
now, no offence, please listen:
If you can't come to IRC, it will be somewhat (not only somewhat...) difficult to work in a team. For you _and_ for us. Not that I don't like you to join, no, the opposite. I'd love to see how you can code PHP. But, as stated before, without IRC the communications will be very slow, or sometimes even inpossible and will slow down or even stop the development I don't want to offend you, no, really not. Please understand it I could look for a way for you to get into IRC tho
[addsig]
Posted by sacah on 16:46:00 05-11-2002
I think what hes talkin about was a thread we talked about making it a team thing, as in lotsa ppl, but then we though about the fact that more ppl who wanted to join knew nothing/little about PHP so they wanted to learn, and this was not a project they could learn on.
DxProg Im sure there must be some way you can get on IRC, whats stoping you, if you would like to explain it?? We might be able to help.
Posted by Peter on 21:54:00 05-11-2002
dxprog: well, the core of sasquatch is being developed by a fixed team right now. there will always be opportunities to contribute with stuff.
i don't know how well we could communicate without irc. i'm also not really in that team atm...
Posted by dxprog on 22:42:00 05-11-2002
Sorry if I was a little irrate. I didn't think about the communications problem. Because of my AOL parent control settings it sets up a firewall where only AOL can access the connection. But I do have a few design ideas. If I can get them off my computer today and onto the net I would at least like you to see those. I will give a URL as soon as it's working.
Posted by KaGez on 23:47:00 05-11-2002
ok, you can talk about desing variations if we have sasquatch working. As you know, a new feature will be "themes", and you can contrinute some if you like The standard theme will be a look-a-like of the current one. I currently work on it, so that we can test how our stuff will look when it's themed and all.
But, that shouldn't stop you from uploading the stuff I'd love to see it, yes =) upload it, and show us

OK. The site is at www26.brinkster.com/mpxp/ypn/ypnnet/index.aspThe signup thing doesn't seem to work so I wouldn't bother. Just goto the signup page to see some of the extra features I was going to add.

You're telling me you want me to complete it? Yesss. Wait. Would you want me to complete the engine (what I call NukeFusion) too?
Posted by KaGez on 22:03:00 05-12-2002
what engine?
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 02:45:00 05-13-2002
Well. It was going to be more than just a GUI. I have an engine, NukeFusion, behind it for logging in\out, adding\editung\deleting docs, and all that. Should I continue developement so you can get the full gist of it? Or I could rig up sample pages for you.

dxprog: we have a gui done already. also, the most fundamental functions are written. I don't really get what you are suggesting.
Posted by MoX on 08:13:00 05-13-2002
First, thanx for fixing the link.
Took a look at your site. It's okay so far, though I'm irritated by the fact that it has a .net in the title (and the name). Doesn't M$ have enough advertising out there or why are poor young programmers donating advertising space to them?
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 10:17:00 05-13-2002
MoX: Well hey. I figured if I left off the net part some people would think I was infringing on the rights of the YPN.
Peter: I had this started before the news about the Sasq dev on the main page. I'm not suggesting anything. KaGez wanted to see it, saw it, and he said it looked unfinished. I thought maybe he wanted me to continue or something. Simple as that. Mainly it was a see if I can do it sort of thing. I'm going to continue for that reason.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 17:33:00 05-13-2002
I thought that it was a design (theme) only, and not a complete engine.

As I said I had this going before the concept of a new Sasq (maybe not). But if I just make themes I'll be a happy clam. Let me know.

...And another one
Posted by dxprog on 04:39:00 05-16-2002
Well AOL has been screwing up somthing terrible lately. It keeps downloading the "updates" when we log off. I'm just making sure I can still get on. If I'm on for a second or two that's most likely what I'm doing.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 21:41:00 05-16-2002
"updates"? what updates? :/
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 22:01:00 05-16-2002
From the few days I used AOL long ago (they offered these "100 hours free" things) I already experienced this self-updating behaviour.
Without asking AOL starts to d/l updates when you finish it. And if these are bug updates you have to wait _long_. That's especially nice for Modem users.
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 04:26:00 05-17-2002
The first few times you log off after installing the software from scratch it install these "new features" (that's what they say) but it was a never ending stream of them. SO we are now on AOL seven whereas we were on six. Seems to be working OK so far. Hopefully the CGI IRC probs will be solved.
[addsig]

probably because OPN is just a _small_ part of irc?
i wouldn't feel so comfortable seeing my 6-year old children hanging out on Efnet or Dalnet or something... if i had children that is
Posted by dxprog on 03:48:00 05-19-2002
Aside from the inconvenience of the IRC thing I am glad that I have the block. On the other ISPs we've been on I could mistype something and be routed to some porn site. NO THANKS. I'm much safer this way. No need to use so much nasty profanity. IT was fun chatting this morning though.
Posted by Peter on 08:32:00 05-19-2002
Hehe, if you had indeed mistyped something and got to a porn site, you could always have closed the window, or hit the 'back' button, right? I wouldn't survive with some parental control..
Posted by KaGez on 09:58:00 05-19-2002
I also wouldn't survive with such a lock... I have enough with this damned firewall blocking all my ports from the outside and that I don't have a global ip!
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 11:49:00 05-19-2002
Sure you could close the window. And the million others they pop up!!!!!! No. Just having flashed before my eyes is bad enough. So far I have survived with it and I probobly will until I leave or start paying for my own ISP. When I get a laptop from Dell I can get six months free of MSN or AOL. I'll take the former.

oh, and when does it actually happen that you mistype something and end up at a porn site? when i mistype things, i usually end up at like, "404 - page not found" or "ahadje.com - host not found".
seriously, have you _ever_ mistyped something and got to a pron site? heh..

2) I give a damned **** if I get to a porn site when I mistype something or follow links to pages like svara posted. C'mon, have you never seen a naked woman or man? If I don't feel like looking at it I can still close my browser's window, without getting nightmares ...

let's talk about.... about... programming!
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 22:39:00 05-21-2002
Yeah. How's the sasq dev coming? I'm starting to layout a design for the theme I'm making. I found a program online that will change ASP code to PHP so I can write any scripts in ASP and convert it later.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 14:56:00 05-22-2002
sasquatch is getting done more and more... I'm currently working on the new poll script, which will be _far_ better than the current one
I can't promise anything, but if we develop sasquatch at the current speed we'll have it done within one month from now. As stated above, I can't promise anything
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 16:45:00 05-22-2002
I think so, too. When it's out we'll probably create one or two new themes and work on slight code-advances.
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 08:32:00 05-23-2002
To get my theme fully going I'll need an inside peek to some of the code for sasq. But it's going pretty good. I've spent the last week working on the menu system. JavaScript is pretty cool.

dxprog: Oh, I hope you know that we have both backend and frontend (menu system included) planned and at least partly developed. You may of course still come with own suggestions and prototypes but don't take it for granted that we will use it. thanks
Posted by KaGez on 22:23:00 05-23-2002
True. Sasquatch will have a back- and frontend. The frontend is already done for:
seciont listings
Latest Additions box
Everything related with the poll (quite much)
news (not sure about this, ask mox)
Anyways, there is a lot that is done already. But, sasquatch still won't be out for testing or looking inside the code.... we'll inform you if we have a beta that includes most of the planned features (won't take too long from now).
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 22:41:00 05-23-2002
Well if I'm going to apply a theme I'll need to know how to retrieve things like news and stuff. The menu system I was reffering to is something related to the theme. I'm going to put up what I have so far this Saturday. Oh yeah. Rest assured. Any server side scripts I add will be PHP.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 16:05:00 05-24-2002
as stated above, you will be able to look inside the code as soon as we've got a beta ready
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 22:49:00 05-24-2002
I downloaded the ASP2PHP program yesterday. So if I add any scripts I can write them up in ASP and convert later.
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 01:07:00 05-25-2002
i only ask myself how well that work, and what kind of php code it generates... a lot of such scripts either just don't work for anything more complicated than "hello world" or they create shit code...
i haven't tested any asp to php converters, but some basic to c ones some time ago
Posted by MoX on 16:31:00 05-25-2002
I'm not sure about these converters' quality, neither. Why not just learn PHP?
I mean, who uses ASP?
[addsig]
Posted by sacah on 18:44:00 05-25-2002
many proffesionals used asp, but they use different things now, while a lot of slower ones still use ASP, quite a few have changed, ASP almost = PHP really, so learning PHP will not be that hard.
Posted by dxprog on 19:33:00 05-25-2002
I would learn PHP if I had software to run the scripts. Apache didn't work, but then again I think this computer is messed up. When I get a larger HDD I'll try it on there.
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 19:33:00 05-25-2002
microsoft.com uses asp, so it must be good right?
Posted by MoX on 01:27:00 05-26-2002
fsvara, you finally convinced me
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 03:02:00 05-26-2002
I've seen alot of places that use ASP. I've seen about the same who use PHP. One's probobly as good as the other, just depends on what you know or how much time and effort you want to put into it. I choose ASP because it is so close to VB which I know like the insides of my computer.
[addsig]
Posted by Peter on 05:05:00 05-26-2002
dxprog: ASP is quite similar to PHP in functionality.
But I don't see how your installing Apache would depend on your hardware? My Apache for windows tutorial is quite ok I reckon (while the PHP one lollipops in 99% of the cases).. you could give Apache another try .
Never mind though if you want to stick to ASP. However, I'm not sure that converter outputs clean code :/.
Posted by dxprog on 05:31:00 05-26-2002
It's not the hardware that's the problem. It's the install of Windows. My parents (with my help) had to reinstall Windows and the disc we had was bad. So I ended up manually extracting core files. That version was really screwed so we bought a new disc and it still isn't wroking right. Probobly my fault. Anyways, I didn't realize you had an Apache tutorial. I'll check it out. If I am going to be making this theme for the YPN I need to know PHP.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 19:56:00 05-26-2002
the only difference is
PHP is better (security)
PHP is FREE!!
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 00:29:00 05-27-2002
ASP is free too. It comes with Windows 98SE and you can probobly download the PWS on microsoft. I did get apache to work though. Except it doesn't work when I'm doing forms. Otherwise it's pretty much like JavaScript which I learned week.
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 00:35:00 05-27-2002

Posted by dxprog on 05:12:00 05-28-2002
Well, KaGez programs C. I can't really do that. I can to some extent (actually I probobly know more than I think), but that's about it. Besides he's prolly in college.
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 17:11:00 05-28-2002
What does college have to do with this?
I know that my school career is an example how bad computer education can be, but in the hell long 13 years school in germany takes I only had one half year computer science. All I learned at school was a little bit of Turbo Pascal. Well, that was nice, but where I live you don't become a good programmer because of what you learn at school.
I'm really looking forward to University...hopefully things are done a bit better there...

Yes, I know it "yet". (in fact I'll start this October).
I'm going to study computer science and economics (not sure 'bout the english name, in german it's "Wirtschaftsinformatik").
Hope that will be interesting. I'd also like to study "pure" computer science but there are more jobs for people with a certain economical knowledge...
