Perl isn't that hard to learn, and once you learn Perl PHP is cake. I self-taught myself by looking at a chatroom script from Matt's Script Archive and tweaking it to add stuff and try things out.Anyway, I'll see what I can do to write a perl tutorial up for you. Although, I'll probably be making refrences to that chatroom script that I was talking about earlier. Give me a few days to finish up a current project of mine and I'll get to work.

Hey, just a little update. I've begun writing the tutorial...it's going to be a long bugger, but it isn't going to cover many of the commands used in Perl, just common ones used in web programming, that I've disvcoved can do anything you really need to.

Posted by KaGez on 02:10:00 06-16-2001
maybe you can just explain how to make some basic stuff , maybe that the reader has so much knowledge afterwards to write a counter or so ?? And ofcourse how to use it
[addsig]
Posted by Twintop on 03:27:00 06-16-2001
But why stop at a counter? Why not try your hand at programming a guestbook or something harder? Hehe. See, there are so many more things you can use Perl for than just a simple counter, and if I explained how to make a counter, you wouldn't have enough information to learn how to do any more than the few things it requires for a counter to work.

I know the capabilites of perl , because I have worked a bit with it before I just want to learn it , because when I worked with it I just collected and pasted the codes ... well , that counter was just a example . Maybe you can make 2 different tuts ?? A basic which tells you the stuff until you can make easy stuff (e.g. counter) and one that makes the advanced stuff =)

Happyhacker14: F2S's servers are unstable to say the least and are down a lot (The new ones atleast). Try looking for it again, and it should be there.

Hello,
Nice Perl-tut. Pretty lengthy, as you already said. Haven't finished reading it, but I found an excuse to read it at school.
We're doing some kinda stupid crap at school. We're translating documents, newspapers, etc. in German, Japanese &English and other way round. Beats me why!
So Fabs and I are translating YPN-tuts. I'm in charge of translating your Perl-tut. You don't mind, do ya?
Ciao Charly

oh, yeah, and I'm translating some lil tuts like Peter's Frames-tutorial, Tables tutorial and prolly IRC-tutorial.
Hope to keep the style

Tutorial translation. Hmmm... Maybe you should support this on the site in some way. Multi-languages tutorials. This is something you can do when you're bored and so tierd you can't code.
Posted by KaGez on 08:35:00 06-22-2001
hehe , why not ?? sounds cool BUT , who the hell translates all the tuts ?? not me
Posted by Twintop on 08:38:00 06-22-2001
About the most translation I know how to do is how to use the AltaVista online one. ;p

hehe. this multi-lang thing might be a feature for Sasquatch. why not? And about the PHP tuts, I am writing one now.

Posted by fsvara on 21:03:00 06-24-2001
yeh, that multi-language ypn is something i discussed with robert quite some time ago. (remember, i wanted to start the ytp, ypn translation project), but i guess it had pretty low priority...
It's definitely a cool thing!
Posted by Twintop on 03:04:00 06-25-2001
Crap, you know what I just remembered? I forgot to go over the rand function in my tutorial. Grrr... I'll throw a code snippit or make another little tutorial to cover it...cuz it is used for more than just numbers.
[addsig]
Posted by fabs on 03:52:00 06-25-2001
... or you can update your tutorial but a well-documented code-snippet is fine, too

i think that the best way to learn say php is to find a simple say rpg site (open source) and have a look, experement and change it... cause that is how i learnt php, and also html a while ago....
