Linux >> Help with debian

I just installed Debian on my system and ran into a problem. When I used the command ``startx'' I couldn't boot into graphic mode so I used ``tasksel'' and went to install the x window system (complete). Now it brings to a menu with a gui. This is where you configure your mouse, monitor, keyboard, etc settings. After I configured mine I hit done, but it doesn't make a ``XF86Config'' file. So when I use the ``startx'' command it says error reading config file -tried files ``/etc/XF86Config
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config.debian''

Anyone know how to make this config file thing work and how I then might be able to access my graphics mode through ``startx'' ? [addsig]

Try copying the XF86Config of someone who has the same gfx interface as you. Distro doesn't matter. If you have another distro installed too, you may use the XF86Config from that distro.

Actually it sounds like there's nothing wrong with the file but it simply can't find it. Are you sure that at least one of the three files it tried exists? Some of the newer X releases use config files named XF86Config-4, so maybe you have some file like that. If that is so, just rename it to XF86Config.

Well, I think it's quite unlikely, but maybe it helps [addsig]

just let this cool script called "xf86config" generate the new X config file. it's easy to use, and it works.
for more info, do a "man xf86config"

the XF86Config file is supposed to be in /etc/X11/XF86Config BTW.
as peter said, easiest would be to just copy one that works form another installation. xf86config is a bit stupid to work with, but if you read everyhing it says attentively and if you have your monitors/graphics card manuals it should be no problem.

OK, but what graphics interface do you have? You usually can't just use any config file.. I have a GeForce2 GTS, but it works well with config files for for instance GeForce2 MX. So tell us what interface it is, and someone might be able to upload his config file..

btw: nvidia's driver support is the best I've ever seen! Never have I enjoyed visiting a commercial website more! [addsig]

Believe it or not I have a GeForce 2 GTS so that would work Peter. If you could somehow upload it somewhere and give me the URL that'd be very cool. [addsig]

Don't forget to adjust the monitor settings, though! [addsig]

I have a GeForce2 MX, that should work too. As I'm in the process of installaing a new distribution, write me an email if you want it. You'll also need the nvidia drivers, but I could tell you in the email how you isntall that if you don't know it...

svara:
lol, always take configs from others, never try it yourself. really cool attitude! What would you do if you'd have to configure something for yourself, there are config files available but none that fit your need. So, what would you do? Use a different program?
Now let's say he (AntiHalcyon) picks up a X config file that is targetted to work with a nvidia geforce 4, ofcourse with the official nvidia drivers, no the xf86 ones. If he's new to that config file, he'll end up in deleting it out of frustration, because it doesn't work at all
I just can't understand peoples tryin to "run away" from writing config files. In most cases it is _really_ easy, and in cases where it is difficult, you have great scripts like xf86config. And, I was able to get that script running without checking my whole card/monitor manual. I know what a vid card I own, and I know what refresh rate works on all 17" displays. What do I need to know more? Mouse type, keyboard, and that's it. It's that simple ... it's done in 2 mins...

Try running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

That'll bring you back to the configuration
