I was wondering what are good graphics editors out there for 3D images? I use Bryce 5 for a lot of things, but never found any other good software.. any suggestions?

A Free 3D modeler, that I just love.

there's the free (freedom) moonlight 3d, too, but i think it's not being developed actively anymore... the only other free 3d prog i know besides that is K3D, which is still early in development, but pretty useful. compared to all the other progs, blender has a very strange UI...
that said, the "reference" prog which has become more or less of a standard is 3d Studio Max, which is extremely expensive tho... Then there's Maya, and a _lot_ of less known ones...

I've seen a _very_ good one yesterday, but forgot the name I also wanna get it, so I'll post the URL here if I find it... anyways, for graphics use GIMP!

K3D is a nice 3d modeler, but it saves in an XML type format, and I don't know of any way to load it into a game...Personally, I've been wanting to buy AC3D: http://www.ac3d.org ($40), which is easier to figure out than blender IMHO, and it's easy to load it's models into games with PLIB: http://plib.sourceforge.net
All this IMHO

he meant 3d programs, i think - there are gimp versions for windows, and mac os x, too, btw. i don't know how they tsable they are but it should be usable
Posted by KaGez on 10:38:00 02-28-2002
btw, the gimp is also available for Windows. I could only get it running in Win2k and XP, but it actualy works!
It's not the bleeding-edge version, but it gives me everything I need to edit and crate images
Anyways, loading XML models for games is absolutely the same as if you'd load the from those special 3ds format. Afaik all model files include some sort of header, that helps you using the file in your proggys, and has informations about the file itself. Everything is doable with XML, and since there are libs out there to parse XML files, you could just use XML for the model files, and then you won't have to write your own parser for the file You just read in the data from the XML file with the lib, and then you just use the model as usual. those 3sd format and others only create binary files, because they are just smaller, and in some cases also faster loaded. And, ofcourse, they don't want everybody to see how their files work... Anyways, you could just create a XML file, convert it to binary so nobody can read it too easily, and that's it. You'll just have to convert it back to text format when you wanna use it
So there's no problem using XML files for storing your 3d models informations

heh...
The GIMP will _definitely not_ come with KDE. The GIMP is programmed in GTK+, and KDE in QT. The GIMP comes with GNOME, since GNOME is based on GTK+ too (GTK = GIMP ToolKit, even longer: "'GNU's Not Unix' Image Manipulation Program ToolKit). As you can see, GTK was made to make the GUI programming for The GIMP easier. OK, that does nothing to the topic, but GIMP will _not_ come with KDE by default. In KDE you have a simmilar program that was called "KIllustrator" until some months ago, and then it changed it's name due to name problems and trouble with Adobe. I dunno what's it's current name, but it was not as powerful as The GIMP in any way. So better stick to GTK

gimp isn't part of gnome...
and killustartor isn't meant to be a full graphics program like photophop, gimp and stuff, but meant to be used for drawing simple graphics for use in the other KOffice programs (killustrator (which is now caled kontour) is a part of KOffice)
