Hello guys. First, sorry for not posting so long. Quite busy these days.
Anyways, I think I've got a approaching crisis in here. I'm not 100%ly sure about this, but I think I will have to find somebody who will handle the YPN's mail server. This includes the mailing lists and all @youngprogrammers.net mail addresses. Let me explain the situation first:
My dad decided that we will get a net inet connection, on next week's tuesday. The connection will be heaps faster, so I was happy too in the beginning, but now there's a problem: We only get 1 global IP! Up to now each of our PCs had a global IP, including my machine, which serves as Partyfish-CVS mirror and the YPN mail server (I think you knew that ).
Soooo, now I do have 2 options:
I could setup my PC as router for our home network. This would work, but I don't wanna get blamed each time internet doesn't work! This solution on the other hand, would 100%ly give me the chance to keep the mail server and such running for the YPN.
The other possibility would be that we buy a router for our LAN. I do not have the slightest idea if I can get such a good router, which allows me to redirect all the requests to the YPN mail server to my machine.
I will try my best to get my PC running as a router for our network, and also keep you up-to-date on this topic. But, I cannot promise anything.
So, I would like to ask you all if you guys, who have a server running, could maybe prepare that server so it can handle mails, in case I am forced to discontinue it.
Please, this is no april fool or anything (seriously), give me your feedback.
Thanks in advance

My computer isn't running 24/24 anymore because the fans got really, really loud and I can't sleep anymore with it
Well, if you get a new, seperate router, it doesn't need to be a "good" one to redirect smtp/pop3 requests to your box. That should be a feature every router out there has ... but better make sure if you choose to go that way (:

I've never seen a router without port forwarding (but I guess they are out there, waiting for me..).

I may be able to help you here, as I already have a mail server up.. it's on an ADSL line though.
I can't promise any 100% uptime (although it has been stable for 83 days now).
However, will this be a permanent solution in that case?

We just got the computers LANed, so it would be possible to set up such a server, but running on a dial up connection would be very impractical. Also I turn my computer off at night and Internet connections are sporadic so that would be very impractical wouldn't it . Either way, the LAN is giving me h-e-double-hocky-stickes. Sorry.

ok, first, I don't have the slightest idea about Routers in general (as you may have seen )
Anyways, I don't know if it will be a permanent solution. I will try if the server works with the new connection, if not I will shout
you guys ok with that?
PS.: svara:
we're not _that_ preverted!
