Linux >> getting Smaba to work
Posted by epall on 18:04:00 07-20-2001
I'm trying to get my nice (20GB HD etc..) Linux box to act as a Samba file server for my family network. My problem is this:
When I double click on my Samba server in Network Neighborhood, it asks me for a password, where (on the Samba server) do I set this password? Or, how do I get it to work? I believe the resource is IPC$. BTW: If I smbclient from my Linux box to itself, it works fine.

Never mind, I got it wto work, fo rthose of you who have or will have the same problem:

I created a new user on my Win98 box that has the same username and password as a user on my file server, it worked perfectly! I didn't need to enter anything to log on to the server.

you can follow the SAMBA NHF at www.linuxnewbie.org.

I ahd no problems with doing it that way. Only of you get yourself the new samba version, the files are all in a different place than described it that tut.

Anyway, you might want to set the guest options next time, so that people can view it without having to log in. =)

The Samba docs are pretty good. Heck, there's a whole book on the Net, thanks to ORA.
