General YPN >> Further SasQuatch-development
Posted by fabs on 17:53:00 04-13-2002
I was hoping to get some more people interested in sasquatch-development however, this requires a better structure which I will start coding today. Anybidy who'd like to join the sasq-team (php/mysql knowledge required), please throw me a mail: fabiany@gmx.net

I'd really love too...but my PHP/MySQL knowledge is rather liimited. Maybe I'm in for Sasq3 [addsig]
Posted by sacah on 18:23:00 04-13-2002
I find the best way to learn is by joining a project like this one, with lots of others that know what they are doin

Posted by dxprog on 19:37:00 04-13-2002
Sounds like fun. Though the closest thing to PHP I know is ASP. I'll start learning.
Posted by sacah on 20:00:00 04-13-2002
Dont worry mate, ASP is very similar to PHP, and vesa versa, though if fabs only wants ppl with knowledge so it can get done fast, mabye this aint the project to learn on
Posted by MoX on 20:31:00 04-13-2002
To get started with PHP/MySQL I'm going to create an own little msgboard on my mute project page. Maybe I'll join sasq afterwards. [addsig]

...but there can only be one Maharadja.
Posted by fabs on 21:56:00 04-13-2002
How about we start a little php/mysql-learning project? You know, something that can badly mess-up because it's not needed fast, just a little project to get into php/mysql.
Maybe we could make some scenarios for people who'd like to learn php/mysql and who'd like to learn as a team. We could setup CVS and give you guys a repository, so it's really possible to code as a team
I have ideas for scenarious but before I end up in a LONG talk, I'd like to know who's interested. robert and svara also wanted to learn php afaik...
Posted by dxprog on 22:25:00 04-13-2002
Actuall KaGez - you're a hacker.
Posted by robost86 on 22:34:00 04-13-2002
Yeah, I wanted to learn some PHP/MySQL, since that's what the YPN page is built with :)
Learning this has top priority (together with a few other things ;). I think I'll just write test applications, and harass people in the channel (or maybe on this board) when I need help.
Posted by KaGez on 22:48:00 04-13-2002
I have a bunch of test apps in php, and also for php/mysql. I could arcive them and put the up

Posted by MoX on 00:12:00 04-14-2002
Someone should simply say what a PHP/MySQL app(or script...) should be able to do and the "students" try to get it done - with a little help of the PHP gurus of course... [addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 11:26:00 04-14-2002
you don't need any guru to get something done in PHP. I've never seen sucha complete and good documentation as PHP has. The whole documentation is on http://www.php.net, and you can even search for the function names there...
If you have a internet connection (that is active) you shouldn't have _any_ problems with PHP, epecially if you know C or C++. You can even download the whole documentation blablahblah
but, I think PHP is nothing for peoples like robert who'd like to do _everything_ theirselves. You don't have to care about memory or such in PHP either, so for a hardcore C code PHP is most probably not the language of choice...

I think coding a proggy alone is totally different from coding as a team. Maybe you guys (who wanna learn php/mysql) can assemble a team and think of a program you'd like to start off with. There's nothing in particular that I'd suggest you start off with because php is generally easy to code in.

i wanna learn php! i just have NO clue whatsoever as to where to start.
Posted by sacah on 14:55:00 04-14-2002
A good spot to start is by gettin either a web host that supports PHP, or a web server that supports it, one that also supports MySQL would be best too. For windows use Phptriad, my lesser Linux counterparts might be able to help you with php/mysql on Linux.

Then as Kagez said, get the entire php manuel, and u set.

Get stuck use google before askin!
Posted by KaGez on 19:16:00 04-14-2002
it doesn't help you if you have a whole team of ppls who doesn't know anything about PHP.... even if you have 100s of ppls... I think you should first learn how to work with PHP etc. alone, and then assemble a team. Else you would just end up in a whole mess...

Posted by sacah on 17:26:00 04-15-2002
I joined the Menuet OS team to learn ASM, this way I got source, and a lot of help from all the ppl.

if you want to check out the sasq code, take a look at http://z.dyndns.biz/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/

I wish ypn was done is Perl/CGI [addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 01:59:00 04-17-2002
actually, in the beginning, we wanted to write it in Perl. maybe peter or fabs still have some of the old scripts lying around, i lost them. i don't know what exactly led to the decision to use php instead, but it happened

Posted by dxprog on 09:56:00 04-17-2002
I'm working on an engine in ASP. After I learn PHP I will port it ot that.
Posted by KaGez on 14:41:00 04-17-2002
what's so good about ASP? I hear that it has a lot security issues, same as all other M$ producs... somebody tell me what it is good for plz
(it's a serious question btw)
[addsig]
Posted by sacah on 21:01:00 04-17-2002
ASP is good for those who are good at programming in Visual Basic, so they can program Gui's, Web stuff etc, with the same concept behind it, ASP had just as many security holes as PHP, but due to its M$ness most hostin compaines run ASP, some also run PHP, but ASP is a very widly used system.
Posted by KaGez on 22:26:00 04-17-2002
aha... sounds not too bad, but I'm more the C/C++ type so I think I'll stick to PHP
(and I doubt there is no extension for ASP for apache... or is there?)
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 23:37:00 04-17-2002
there is: http://www.apache-asp.org/
Posted by nonama on 00:33:00 04-18-2002
asp is good only for one thing. if you want to use some scripting lang serverside. like js, vbs and so...

in short: crap.
Posted by dxprog on 02:24:00 04-18-2002
Well for those, such as myself, who can't grasp the C language ASP is a miracle. OK. Just because you think PHP is great doesn't mean it's great for everyone. [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 02:51:00 04-18-2002
In fact I think I'll use my engine and start my own YPN (not named that) geared towards Windows users. [addsig]
Posted by MoX on 02:54:00 04-18-2002
hehe...cool [addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 11:03:00 04-18-2002
Anyone who wants to join the project let me know.
Posted by sacah on 18:10:00 04-18-2002
ASP is very good, but PHP I feel happier using, But really they both do exactly same thing, so its a personal choice question, which ever you feel more comfitable with.

To the guy I have forgotten ur name, wants to start the YPN@Windows, I dont see whats wrong with YPN, its as geared towards Windows as we make it, its a community, we make it what it is!
Posted by MoX on 20:17:00 04-18-2002
I don't think there is such a big difference between a windows and a Linux (or any other OS) programmer. So there should be no need for a ypn@windows. This community _should_ be attractive for Linux and Windows programmers as well. If you windows specific information and docs post them up here and make this place a better one for windows devs. [addsig]

lol, thats a good point

Ok, so is there any more said about the original point of this thread??

dxprog: you know, normally, I'd offer my help and all but since this will actually focus on promoting a proprietary operating-system, I can't really help you at all in good concience.
