General YPN >> Forums that this site needs.

I think this website needs a genreal programming, OpenGL, and DirectX forum. Who agreed?

How about, Game Programming [addsig]
Posted by cowsarenotevil on 10:15:00 09-04-2003
As a replacement for all 3 of those? I don't think that would do, but it might be an addition.

I think general programming is going to be in YPNgine. How about Graphics APIs? [addsig]

I think a seperate forum for each would be best. You might also combine some of the less-used forums. And if I may make one critisism, you might be less biased towards linux, it makes you look slightly unprofessional.

well, if you think we are experts, this is no place for you to be. I don't mean this offensive or anything, but we are simple, young amateurs. Some of us may be better than some pros out there, but we are bloody amateurs.
And, btw, in which way are we linux biased?
Also, I would think that it would look _terribly_ if stupid we were windows biased. Why should we bias on windows, if windows (well, indirectly) is trying to destroy our main sponsor? Well, destroy is maybe the wrong word, but you know exactly what I mean.

I sugest forums as follows:

General and Suggestions(1 forum)
---
C++ Programming
Other Programming
--
Web Design + Development(1 forum)
--
Operating Systems

This will streamline our forums, as lets face it, few of the forums we have now are used regularly.
Posted by DInsane on 06:10:00 09-05-2003
I think doing that would just be wrong, no offense. Having two forums for programming is kind of lame, considering this site is meant for programming. Plus, that'd pretty much be giving the C+ programmers the thought that they have authority over the other programmers. Not to mention it should include C and C# in the forum title.

I didn't say you should be biased towards Windows at all, I think having a completely unbiased view would be best. I think the forum descriptions for Windows and Linux make it seem as though Windows has no whatsoever advantages over linux. Of course, regardless of whether you claim to be expert or not, you control this site, so it's up to you. No offence meant.
Posted by dxprog on 08:30:00 09-05-2003
Okay, I changed the descriptions to be as unbiased as possible, listing pros and cons for both.

We do need to decide what forums we would want, or I'll be doing all the deciding [addsig]

If I had to choose the forums, I'd go for:

-Comments, suggestions, and feedback
-General Programming
-OpenGL
-DirectX
-AI
-Graphics Theory
-Hardware
-The Lounge

You can then add more if you feel the forums are becomming overloaded from the new flood of trafic that we're all hoping for. Perhaps an active topics list (all forums combined) would be nice, too.

OpenGL & DirectX? Well, might as well need SDL, ClanLib and other stuff too don't you think?

No. Going that way is ridiculous. I think 'Game Programming' is just fine and will cover most of the questions for until YPN grows very very active.

Language specific forums aren't necessary either... just go: General programming, Game Programming, Web Programming, Misc. discussion and people will know where to ask their questions.

Oh, and a suggestion forum is fine too.

We don't need "game programming" and "general programming," as just "general programming" should suffice. I think a forums for the two main 3D API's would be good, because then people who are good with either one can go to the forum they need, without having to sift through posts looking for ones that apply.
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 10:03:00 09-05-2003
Very few questions about 3D were asked on this forum. It would be useless to create forums about DirectX and OpenGL unless a good number of people request it.
Posted by dxprog on 11:01:00 09-05-2003
Actually, I like Neu[Mann]'s idea. We certainly don't need individual forums for Dx and Ogl. They all fall under game programming. Not to mention, game programming does extend beyond general programming.

In that light, my proposal would be:

YPN
General Programming
Game Programming
Web Programming\Design
Off-topic

(much the same as Neu[Mann]'s)

P.S. And please, no flame wars or I'm locking this topic :-\ [addsig]

OpenGL and DirectX do not fall under game programming. They fall under graphics programming (OpenGL/Direct3D), sound, networking, etc. (DirectX). If you must have as few as possible, go for:

-General Programming
-AI
-Graphics Implimentation and Theory
-Off-Topic
-Comments, Suggestions, and Feedback
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 11:58:00 09-05-2003
"Graphics Implementation and theory" could fall under "Computer Science" or even "General programming", just like "Network programming", "Distributed systems", "Algorithms", etc.

Just to say that if you add a field like as a forum, might as well add tons of other fields of computer science that a passing visitor may want to see! That means tons of useless forums! Wee.

The AI forums is the less used forums on this PHPBB and should NOT be re-used. It just clutters the screen.

Btw, I know DirectX and OpenGL are formally reserved for Game Programming but it's the first thing they are bottomociated with: I see "DirectX", I read "Game"... most people will.
Posted by dxprog on 13:13:00 09-05-2003
Okay, I think that's enough. If there is going to be this much controversy about forums I think I will pick all the forums (that means a SpongeBob forum is coming )

cowsarenotevil:
I'm sorry about my last post. I think I got you a bit wrong. I thought you meant that the whole site was linux-biased. Sorry. I did not write that Windows Forum description (well, the old one, which isn't there now anymore) and I also never read it, since fabs (I think it was fabs, not 100%ly sure, at least i'm 100%ly sure that I didn't create it ) created that forum. Also, that forum has been created because of several people almost spamming the msg board, so it wasn't really created based on our free will. I don't have anything against it's existance, so don't get me wrong here. I'm just looking for a explanation why that description could have been so anti-windows.
As for now, I'm very sorry and I hope it didn't cause you any inconveniences. If so, I am sorry about that.

Have a nice day!
