ok, first thing you should _really_ get rid of is that dumb Flash stuff. Many ppl's browsers are set to refuse Flash stuff, so they won't be able to see anything on that website.

i agree with kagez remove that flash shit...
and the menu...
and there is nothing left.
Posted by KaGez on 01:45:00 03-24-2002
lol
ok, I don't think that the menu is too bad, but it takes time for the user to figure out how it works... and if it is somebody who isn't able to see the flash stuff, and the menu also isn't shown by default, he'll just leave the page without doing a single click.
DHTML is not bad (if it works in all browsers), but plain HTML with good ideas can be even better sometimes!

As I mentioned some times before, I'm a friend of the simple and content-oriented sites.
The design should be as unobstrusive as possible. I like sites like /. much more than all those pages full of animation and stuff. Seriously, who needs animation on the web? First time you see it you say: Cool stuff! Then it comes again and again and after the third time you only wish to turn them off...
So, make your design cool, but make it descreet('dezent' in german, I don't know a really proper english word...)

You shoudl perhaps take a look at www.gurudesign.net.
The guys there are in the same trade like you and they have (surprise, surprise) the same name.
Don't think that it will lead to any problem but it's a bit lame...

actually, the reason for company websites to use flashy stuff like macromedia is imo that they want to keep the surfer on the site as long as possible, while creating a modern, beautiful image in the head of the visitor. It's just advertisment... (and lollipops badly)
On real information oriented sites, that one might visit more than two or three times, plain text with very limited graphics is best of course.
then, there are sites using flash just for creating something that wouldn't be possible with html, and that actually have a clue about design... i don't frequent those sites, but i have seen pretty beautiful flash animations on a few occasions. not that these sites make any sense, but they're beautiful to look at at least

about the flash stuff.
you guys lollipop/ personal opinion.
i mean. flash can do no harm for user. also its very popular. i guess website about design can have flash.
but that ie optimized part sounds... mmm.. rrrr... you know....
and the design could be better. as for designers site. anyway its a real nice page. i like that logo kagez made.
there is a webpage: www.webpagesthatsuck or so. it talks about menus like that. you should put images or something that user weould be able to know what menu item is that before he mouseover it.

flash can be used in two ways.
1. for some presentation/homepage or stuff. where you make visitor say wow, and interest in your abiaties.
2. screw company by making same thing
companies' websites should be informative, not flashy.
imho

An old website I sometimes used to visit on the topic of Web design is http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/ . Specifically, it talks about a Web design abuse the webmaster calls "mystery meat." "Mystery meat," according to him, is, for example, menus that are blank until you hover over them (this really is annoying!). Also, why did the site take my browser into full screen mode without my permission? You should always make sure the browser knows what he or she is getting himself or herself into, especially if it could be confusing or annoying (some of us keep multiple browser windows open at the same time). The insanely large (size and bytes) logo on the frontpage, which took too long to download, even on my cable Internet connection, is an annoyance. I am running at a resolution of 800x600, so optimizing just the frontpage for 1,024x780 is another inconvenience.
In short, I recommend that you and your group of Web designers take neatness and simplicity over style and the latest "whizzy" technologies and proprietary tools, namely Macromedia Flash. Well written dynamic HTML can be a decent, standard replacement for Flash animations for such simple things as dynamic menus and navigation bars. Encapsulated dynamic HTML "scriptlets" (Internet Explorer), "JavaScriptBeans" (Netscape), and plain old well-encapsulated JavaScript and CSS stylesheets can do just as well as Flash. You can find several sites that offer this kind of code already made (do a Google search).

I think theres a time and place for everything, menus that dont appear untill your mouse it over them, 1156x864 splash screens, flash anims etc are one of these things, If you are to use them, you need to know your audence, I am into GFX, design, and art, so these are the types of unique things I look for in many of the web sites I visit, but Im one of the niche community, unless your site is aimed at these ppl it will be an annoyance to the general public who come back to use your web site regularly.
If you are focusing on a niche group, or have a site showin off your skills, and not a site for regulay users, use all these awesome design skills, and put them to work.
The reason for my postin this was just so you did not feel like noone wants to see my l33t 1156x864 image, or my mad design menu that only shows up when the mouse is over it.
Even these things to regualr users will be non anoying, and just a little bit of wow each time they view it.

I think _very_ simple looks cool. If someone really knows web design, then they should know how to convey their information with as little animation/flash as possible.
Hippsipp: That site is incredibly well designed, for the way it is laid out, it opens very quickly.

well, the images could be compressed a bit more, even without a noticable quility-loss. But, except that it's awesome!
(The above is also the reason I gave the page he submitted as a link only 8 points)

Well, you seem to be using "Ent." now, and I see nothing wrong with that... I doubt there's an "official" way of doing it, however.
