yeah right, linux is buggy...
what about trying a distro with bawlz before ranting about linux being buggy?

actually, for beginners, mandrake or suse would be best imho. however, you might want to install Debian, because people in the chan can help you a lot better with that (and debian definitely got balls )

crion: it's not "buggy", it just requires you to install certain libraries that are necessary to install those progs.
Posted by crion on 15:29:00 02-19-2002
so i need instalers to install progs or just these progs?
Posted by fsvara on 16:11:00 02-19-2002
as you're on rpm, you'll want RPM packets, which you can get at www.rpmfind.com ...
To install them, it's rpm -ivh i think...
rpm often bitches about dependencies (other programs or libs needed to install the prog) - if it does, you'l have to get the dependencies from rpmfind.com.
Some very large projects like gnome or kde have very complicated dependencies, so the number of dependencies you might need to d/l can be huge...
that's what debian is so good at, thanks to a tool called "apt" - not only does it downlaod and install a package with the simple command "apt-get install ", but it also automatically downloads everything the prog depends on.
You can also use apt to upgrade all installed progs to the newest avaialable version.

For ADSL I recommend using RP-PPPOE rather than any kernel-patches.
You can d/l it from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/
Have fun and congratulations to the choice of the right OS

there's no need for kernel patches anymore. pppoe support is in the mainstream kernel since quite some time (around 2.4.5).
