Has anybody used any of these sites? I would like to know what you think are the advantages or disadvantages of the ones you used because I might find myself building one very soon. For making friends; interface --> html (java? .net?) to allow more advanced match/search/chat functionality to be built in. What do you think of this?
Bye!

Unless you don't want to put your site online or you are ready to invest an awful lot of money into a Windows 2000 Server + SQL Server, forget .NET
Posted by sacah on 11:23:00 10-20-2002
Any language would do, its all in the algorithum, not the language, granted the language needs mathimatical functions, php and mySQL would do.
HTML for pretty front end.

Though I think there are that many match making sites out there, its not worth it, unless you have a different, revolutionary idea

I'd say that you will be best with Apache/PHP/Mysql. it's the most secure combination afaik, without any big know flaws. And, the most attractive thing is: It will cost you _absolutely_ nothing. I think for a dating site it should be more than enough. And, if you know C/C++ you also know PHP! (almost ) Afaik ASP is something more like VB, and I really don't like VB. That's a matter of taste tho

Thanks, guys. but I was expecting something along the lines of discusions about the features of the sites in question. I mean, if you want to meet real people through the net what features would you want the site to have? If you have used one or more dating sites, which features where most useful to you and which features were not? This s my thrust for now. Is it posible to implement something like drag-and-drop with PHP? I need a really cool interface. But this question is in this section because i want to talk about the features wel?l?
Posted by KaGez on 19:12:00 10-21-2002
hmmmm... a private msg function would be cool. But there should also be a ignore list for each user, which stores the nicknames of the users from whom priv msgs should be denied.
Since I've never used a dating site I really dun have any better ideas for now. or wait.... only 1...
you could maybe create a small page which contains dating spots, or also seek for the cheapest prices for trips to dating spots etc. in other countries. Just a idea tho

seunosewa: Drag-and-drop is a front-end matter, not a back-end one. You don't create user interfaces with PHP, but with HTML or something other, client-side.
So you'd probably need to use something like DHTML or Java for drag-and-drop.

ok. It was more of a language problem. I prefer Java for the front-end. Since DHTML can hardly be used for secure chatting I suppose it makes sense if the entire site is delivered with java _or_ delivered as a native application. that way we can have more flexibility
Posted by sacah on 17:11:00 10-22-2002
You make web site with DHTML and the chat app with java.
Posted by seunosewa on 17:28:00 10-22-2002
That's the way it is done, I know, but I want to do everything with a flexible GUI. What's wrong with using Java for the match or search? except barrier to entry?
Posted by Peter on 19:08:00 10-22-2002
I would use java for as few tasks as possible.. it makes the site heavier. what do you mean by match and search?
Posted by KaGez on 19:15:00 10-22-2002
ok, if you're gonna use Java, switch to Flash at least. Java is awsomely slow (way slower than flash), and I think there are way more people out there who hava flash plugins than those who have java plugins for their browsers. just a thought.

Java is NOT slower than flash...
Posted by seunosewa on 18:44:00 10-23-2002
Well, flash has the advantage of being flashy (pardon the pun) but I don't know how it would fare for a full-blown application. Think of what I have in mind as something like Yahoo messenger with expended capabilities. You know, once you download the application the rest is poing and click.... tell you more later. Still Thinking. May use wxWindows/C++ eventually

You guys, nobody has actually used a dating site, actually. Ok, maybe the question to sk is: what dating sites have you used and which one(s) do you like best? Come on, if you have used a dating site before admit it and tell me more about your experience. Please
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 23:48:00 10-23-2002
I think the Internet prefered dating site is IRC. It worked (and it still works) for me. So, no, I'm off no help.
Posted by seunosewa on 23:55:00 10-25-2002
IRC? dating? can you tell us more about this, NeuMANN? Please? you actually met someone more-than-friend on IRC?
Posted by KaGez on 21:14:00 10-26-2002
I did in napster.... waaaaaaaaaayyyy long time ago. You should consider having a chatroom on IRC as well

Seun: I met my current girlfriend on the Undernet IRC network.
Posted by fsvara on 22:04:00 10-28-2002
heh, and have you seen her irl?
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 23:25:00 10-28-2002
Of course! She wasn't officially my g/f before we met in real life. We talked on IRC for 4 months before we decided to meet.
We've been together for more than 3 years and 7 months now and planning to live together in Sherbrooke next year.

wow. You're longer together than my GF and I We're currently together fooorr.... /me calculates... I think 1 year and 10 months. And no, I didn't meet her in IRC I met her in.... well.... [small]school[/small]
But I think a IRC room accomplishing to the page would be great, since you can get know to each other way better than on forums.

wow, neumann! this is extremely interesting. What exactly do you mean by "living together" in Sherbrooke?
Posted by Neu[Mann] on 01:40:00 10-30-2002
eh! IRC has his drawbacks. Me and my g/f never lived in the same town together.
My g/f lives in a small town 1 1/4 hour drive from my parents home. This is where I lived went we met.
Few months after, she moved in my town in a new school but I moved out of that town to study in Sherbrooke's University, which is a 4 hour drive from where I live and from my g/f at the time.
Now she is back in her native town which is 3h from Sherbrooke and happily [ This Message was edited by: Neu[Mann] on 2002-10-30 05:56 ]

sounds tought... I never knew how it is to live so far away from your GF..... she lives about 30 mins from here. I walk to the station, sit in the train for 10 mins, then walk again 10 mins and that's it....
anyways, good luck with those plans

hmm... KaGeZ.
The curious question for me, since I have never had a real girlfriend (more about that qualifier later) is, what exactly do you do when you get to her place. play monopoly? be honest
Posted by KaGez on 02:12:00 11-02-2002
well... monopoly... nah... played it once with her, but seems like she doesn't like that game too much
hmmm... what I do with her when I go to _her_ place? Well, usually we go to her's after school (something around 3pm we arrive), go skate for 2-3 hours and then get back to her place. After that, dinner, and after that.... well... sometimes we do this and sometimes we do that. Sometimes (not too often) we also do _it_. I think I don't need to explain "it", do I?
She usually comes on saturdays to my place. Here we do almost the same. Play vid games, skate, fool around with the synthesizer, watch TV, eat dinner etc. "it" is also done at my place.
But why do you wanna know?
Do you wanna sell beds on your site? or "rubber chewing gums"? Nah, but seriously, why do you ask?

deep insight, my friend. deep insight! thants what I'm looking for and that's why i ask this kind of question.
Honestly, I don't know about this "it" thing. Not sound good, it does. Could wait, I suppose you could. Long term concerns, I'm afraid, it does not encourage.
its been a long time since i last yodled. bye!

in the context of kagezs message, it =sex to my mind, My personally go for sex after marrage. It could be anything, then ppl would think your 'cool' and you would technically not be lying.

I met my current girlfriend through a Swedish online community.. we talked for perhaps six or seven months and now we've been together for uh... a week . sadly she lives 7 hours away (by train). I don't know how it might work out.
seunosewa: seriously, I would never volounteerly use a dating site.. most of them seem so extremely casual and vulgar - I can't imagine getting so desperate about "just getting a girlfriend" (as contrary to looking for friends and stumbling over a girl). you might succeed with doing one that isn't .tough job though.
sacah: I'm sure "it" concerns coding brainfuck.

"it". maybe KaGeZ would not mind clarifying it. Of course, we all know what "it" means and just like KaGeZ I might not be inclined to write exactly what is means.
So, Peter, when you say "together" what exactly do you mean? In the same town for the moment or what? "Together", peter. It's your turn to explain your riddle!
