Yes, you've read it right
I think most of you guys know Commander Keen well. Some time ago, fabs and I wanted to make a Linux version of it, but I still wasn't too good at game proggin stuff, and fabs had not enough time, so everything got forgotten for a while, until peter mentioned this again in the contest section.
So, is there anybody wanting to participate in this project? Here's what most probably will be used:
1) C/C++
2) SDL libs
I think this should be enough for the beginning Anyways, we could also use OpenGL, because OpenGL is also a very powerful 2d API... anyways, I think more ppls in here know SDL, so let's go with SDL
I'm open for suggestions tho

moon: DO you doubt the power of OpenGL? You can do about everything with it (extreme 3D stuff...) and it will be more than enough for a Commander Keen game thingy.

OpenGL is also far superior than D3D if you ask me, but that's a matter of taste (probably). I can reach way higher frame-rates with OpenGL in for example UT. UT's OpenGL support is still _very_ crappy, but it looks better than when I use D3D...
If you wanna see my progs, go to the search engine and look for OpenGL and search in the description. Have fun!
(those are really crappy examples... good to learn from tho only small apps...)

I would say D3D is pretty much same as OpenGL, though I think D3D is easier to program in Windows, dont know anything about is on Linux, but for all games I play, I always use OpenGL if its avaliable, I think it looks somehow a little better. Plus its Open Source, as compared to D3D, It is open source aint it?

hehe, why don't _we_ just do it? I mean, that's what our project (@ sf) is aimed for and, I think by now you can also code in C/C++

ok, C is great for simple games like this one
and, btw, one exclamation mark is enough

Why only C? Can'T get it. Oop rules.

For simple games like Tetris or side-scrollers I think C is enough. You won't need OOP for such simple games

I think it would be even simpler with OOP
I'm so deep into OOP that I plan even the easiest progs made of objects

hehe, probably one of those OOP diseases!

I hate planning stuff, I cant plan anything, I love plain text, Notepad is best editor for me.

What has it to with each other? Planning and plain text? btw, I like plain text too, but only if well indented...
But to be honest, I would not like to work without syntax highlighting again...

Commander Keen rocked! I used to have a copy until a few weeks ago, when the platform kicked. anyway, what about copyright? is it still copyrighted by Gravis? Also, I would't exactly call Commander Keen simple, would you?
Posted by KaGez on 23:23:00 08-09-2003
ooooh, actually some people besides me caring about it. cool
I don't know about the copyrights. But I think that game is older than 10 years, which means that it's abandonware (it needs to be older than 10 years for that, right? :/), so I think the copyrights are gone too.
not too sure tho.

The Commander Keen copyright is still owned by id Software. In fact, it's still being sold-- you can obtain episodes 1-3 and 4-5 from Apogee software, and episode 6 is included in the id Anthology.
