Web programming >> CGI with LINUX
Posted by happyhacker14 on 23:05:00 07-20-2001
say i was going to make a super long kick ass webpage but the only problem was that i need a place to run CGI scripts, does linux have a place where you can store and run CGI scripts from your computer so that you don't have to get all this hosting krap?
Posted by Peter on 12:41:00 07-21-2001
You can run CGI scripts in both Windows and Linux. You need server software though (Apache, evidently ). Twintop has Perl set up with his Apache server, Robert is running CGI programs written in C... But if you want to make your super-kick-ass website avaiable 24/7, you'll need to have yuor computer running all the time (fsvara does that for one...).

When I've managed to install Debian, and when I've changed ISP, I'll probably have my computer running a lot of the time (I don't want to use Windows for that.. Although I do have Apache and PHP set up ).

Peace out!

you can put cgi scripts wherever you want, as long as your webserver is configured to execute cgis from that dir. On my comp that's /var/www/cgi-bin/.

It's all in httpd.conf.

well, what if i can't find apache?
(does it even come with SuSE 7.2)?
Posted by Twintop on 05:10:00 07-25-2001
Then you download it from http://www.apache.org [addsig]

Don't all big distros include Apache?
Posted by happyhacker14 on 04:56:00 07-27-2001
Dude, yeah they do, but I don't know anything about linux, I can play Cd's, program in perl and play video games. But otherwise, how do you use linux???? (that was a retorical question).
Posted by fabs on 10:24:00 07-27-2001
well, if you don't know ANYTHING about Linux, I doubt starting off with a question like "How do I install Apache" is the right one.
What I did to run CGI-scripts offline is install my own apache, mod_perl and now it runs beatifully.

apt-get install apache

Apache comes with every distro, also with SuSE. Start up YaST2, gop tho the package choosing thinggy, and install.

Well, when I was just a newbie to linux (I am still, kind of) and as soon as I got some X and Internet working, I learned installing stuff pretty fast... just tar xvzf, configure, make, make install, right on!!! hehe, I seldom RTFM.

It's kewl to be able to make an operating system do backflips for you, but i can't do that on linux yet. I got TROMMLER to work a couple days ago and it rox hardcore! For all of you who don't know what trommler is, it is a software drum machine!! I would really like to download some stuff for it, and i found a modem that is not a winmodem, soon i'll be back to YPN and rockin' too, just recently i tried making my own context menu thing, and it works, so you can expect some hardcore DHTML tutorials comming soon! I'm looking at XML extensions, I'm pretty new to XSL and all that, but i would also like to make a tutorial about making databases with perl,SQL and XML, that ought to interesting. So what I'm really trying to say is, I hope i'll get to come back to YPN soon, you guys are interestingly enlightening for the humble servants of modern society... we are all the enhancers for the future windoze users... LINUX users rule over windoze users.. It's like the matrix, people who begin to use Linux after using windows, it's like taking the red pill!!! ^_^!, (My new alias is "tart" or "†a®†")

K, tart, I've erased happyhacker14 from the userlist (his handle exist for phpBB so that we can read the stuff posted under that name). All documents submitted under the id happyhacker14 were assigned the nick 'tart' and all votes thereby... You keep your votes & points/score.

Shit like this is not supposed to happen - I just discovered the bug in the Edit Account function . If you tried it at all, you could have at least told me.

he wasn't joking dude i told allot of bullkrap and so he gets real mad at me, dude just because i'm new to linux doesn't mean i can't do anything, but now that i saw what he posted about me, i still considering ditching you guys, no affense anyone else but i frankly can't stand it when i'm wrong, I'm too smart to be a normal person and i'm too dumb to be with the smart kids. I was wrong. Every single lie iv'e told on the internet has been believed, I did some wacky stuff, but if you guys don't believe me, i'm not here to convince you. Iv'e been treated like God for so long that i forgot what it is like to be human. jgrant, i'm sorry for for all the stuff i tried to make you believe, i am really upset at you though. i'm just an idiot that learned how to do some kewl stuff. I really am embarresed though, for I am not God, so wherever that puts me i'm fine. You and you alone can tell me what to do josh, i really am a different person in real life, iv'e always got away with everthing. I guess i should thank you because you helped me to realize who I really am, I am not a hacker, I am not a cracker, I'm not Web-developer. I am a person, a real living person, and it is great, I do know how to make a web page, that is true, but that is not who I am, it was only a phaze in life. I became a Christian and I realized I am Just a big idiot that like to make a fool out of myself, I look back on how bad of an example I have been, especially with all the foul language i've used. please forgive me. I'll try to clean up the way I talk and I'll try not to lie, but i can't promise anyone anything, I'm not perfect. But anyways have a good day. - Stephen S. Bussard

Peter: that means I have found out a way to launch a virus from it, don't worry though .

jgrant: I don't even care if you hate me, you're actually pretty kewl when you not mad at me, but you are a non-issue to me now, peace out .

everyone: I am also quitting YPN, because I will have allot less time to do things on the computer, because schools is starting and I have a very busy schedule because i'm also on student council among other things.

Crew: Make sure you delete all of my idents (happyhacker14 and tart).

everyone: Peace out and good luck.
Posted by Peter on 17:41:00 08-07-2001
Hm, ok.. Let's agree to that you won't launch viruses here . Too bad you have to quit though.

Alright, I'll delete the ident 'tart'... but I hope to see you in the channel sometimes.. and feel welcome to re-join whenever.
