RedHat, Mandrake are all simple install distros that would be a good step after using Knoppix...[I quite like Kondara MNU/Linux {its based on RedHat}...but's _very_ reare to find ISO now it seems]...Slackware is another nice distro [bit more advanced maybe].

I recommend RedHat or Mandrake. Both are mainstream distros. If you are in germany you should be able to find SuSE easily on the market.
BUT...
MandrakeSoft has filled bankrupcy (sp?). Don't touch it.
SuSE is commercial. Probably worth buying if you are serious about Linux.
RedHat 8.0 was a _BREEZE_ to install (once I got correct ISOs and a working CD-ROM but that is another story). If your hardware likes RedHat then it's the distro to start with.

I think the only way to get ISOs for RH is to become a RH member (which means paying), or you could a RH8 book with CDs in them. I got my RH7 from a book at the library (free )

Not true. I got my RedHat ISOs from a local mirror. RedHat also provide a big quantity of mirrors for download. Of course, they'd be happierif everybody bought their commercial edition but eh!

Heck, I didn't know. I've only been to their site once or twice, mainly to see if hardware was supported.

Not all are dead links. Most of them weren't fast enough though.
That's why I was happy to find a local mirror in my University network. Being on a 10mbps LAN, I downloaded the 3 ISOs at +800k/s -->P
