I have made a program so that we can communicate, via chat. One person will be able to start the server the others will connect and we will be able to chat...
You can get it at:
http://www.kp.homestead.com/index.html
My mouse is broken and it is hard to make my page w/o the mouse. You have to click the "Home" button to download it. Post the server addresses here...

Very good, you also allow more than 2 ppl connections, this is where a lot of ppl have problems, pretty nicly layed out, but mabye compact stuff more, and dont just End the app if their names are the same, pop the name window back up.
Apart from that, its quite nice, are you goin to submit this as source code, put you in the running for CoTM when it gets back upand running, also help other VB programmers out there.
Posted by dxprog on 20:07:00 04-28-2002
I couldn't get it to work. Came up with a winsock error.
Posted by KaGez on 22:15:00 04-28-2002
are you trying to grow up a community inside a community?
I'd love to join you guys, but I think WinSock doesn't work over here very good

I beleive this would be a winsck 2.x app, just guessing, withour dissin it, try installin that, should work unless you running Windows 95, or wine, etc
Posted by kpyro on 23:15:00 04-29-2002
As a matter of fact I do plan on submitting the source code. I am also taking all suggestions. Sorry about the site, as I said my mouse was broken and I couldn't fix it. How do you guys like the logo?
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 01:36:00 04-30-2002
which site? which logo? :/
[addsig]
Posted by kpyro on 02:40:00 04-30-2002
Kagez: If you don't have windows, you won't know because it's in the program.
I take it no one likes the logo?

When I click "Home" I get a 404 I'd love to see it tho

Logos not bad, though it takes up a lot of room, plus storage space. And how could a mouse stop you being able to make your web site?
You need a little work on the web site layout, though thats not one of my strong points either.

WYSIWYG.

you sure that you've got images enabled in your browser? (just a guess)

Thanx, sacah for posting it. I don't have all the time in the world. Anyways, the logo used to be just, YPN but then I made the program and changed it to YPN chat.

Yes I have images enabled. It just gives me it's "Web Restricted" song and dance.

Most people don't understand truely about AOL. They haven't had the burden of actually _having_ to use it. I feel for you man. I had AOL a while ago...
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 10:56:00 05-03-2002
Thanks. But all of a sudden AOL is letting me on the board again. Goooo figure.
Posted by KaGez on 19:39:00 05-03-2002
My Recommendation:
Go search for a better ISP
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 22:21:00 05-03-2002
Well, that's up to my parents. They pay for it after all.
[addsig]
Posted by kpyro on 23:09:00 05-03-2002
Some of use just can't "go search for a better ISP" considering the fact that some of us don't pay for it. Nobody that doesn't use AOL realizes that those who do use it, and hate it, don't really have a choice. That's like saying "Hey I got pII with a 2gb hd." and then you saying "Why don't you go buy a good computer!" So lay off.....
[addsig]
Posted by Peter on 06:04:00 05-04-2002
Hm, is AOL that cheap? Is it really cheaper than an other, better ISP? (I mean, most ISPs must be better than AOL).
Posted by dxprog on 07:16:00 05-04-2002
Actually it's more expensive than, for example, MSN. But MSN requires a credit card and my parents think it would be stupid to get a card just for an ISP. Also up till now my town didn't have a number anyways. We tried Juno but that stank. We also were on this local thing but was bad also. So we are baically stuck. (At least until I get a computer from Dell and get six months MSN free )
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 22:20:00 05-04-2002
it seems like other non-stuck peoples also use AOL, so there must be something good about it too... does anybody know that? cuz, up to now I've only heard negative stuff about it
does AOL also offer other stuff than 56k?
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 05:28:00 05-05-2002
Yeah. They have DSL. We can get a free 30 day trial but my dad doesn't want to go with it because we aren't going to get it. AOL claims they're fast but they are slower than all the other ISPs we tried. If I'm lucky I can manage a 3K a second download rate. When downloading something than a meg it's horrid. AARRRGGG.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 12:00:00 05-05-2002
ugh, that's horrible :/
doesn't your dad also use the connection? if so, he should also have noticed how slow that is :/
[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 22:46:00 05-05-2002
Actually he doesn't hardly go on anymore. Every now and then he'll look at the weeks Dilbert comics and maybe check some ball game scores, but that's about all. My dad has a T1 line at work so he has the fast connection there. CRUD.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 03:03:00 05-06-2002
screw him!
maybe you should talk about it with him and ask him if he can't do anything about it (your connection I mean)

[addsig]
Posted by dxprog on 22:36:00 05-06-2002
Actually. Being on AOL is like living in a desert, but you have an oasis and catuses to eat. You'll survive, but it won't be pleasant.

Generally, programmers are more likely to make expirience with such material... as they are often smarter, more curious about new things and more resistant to negative propaganda (as they question things before just believeing them...)
Psychedelics are certainly not the kind of thing you'll find with 1337 h0m13z... (well maybe you will, but that it _ab_use in most case imo).
Just look at smart and intellectual people like Timothy Leary, Alexander Shulgin, Albert Hoffman, Aldous Huxley, Henri Micheaux etc. just to name a few...
Posted by MoX on 03:00:00 05-09-2002
The experience of taking drugs...Why do I always expperience things much better when I'm totally conscious? An artificial state of confusion and haluzinations is nothing that I'm eager to feel.
Anyway, do what you like.
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 07:58:00 05-09-2002
maybe. but having read some trip reports, you'll see that most psychedelics, or entheogens as they're often called, too, do not produce just the inebriated and confused state of minds we have come to know from "soft drugs" like caffeine, nicotine and ethanol. Instead, some produce a perfectly clean and sharp expirience, simply in other states of consciousness, or in such an alternate peception of the environment that it means and a complete different level of perception.
For some, like Shulgin or Hoffmann, it was the exploration of the mind, of the way we think, of our consciosnes - for some, like Leary, it was the psychological aspects of psychedelics - and for others, like Huxley or Micheaux it was the poetic or philosophic interpretation of a near-to-transcendental expirience.
The way people use it plays a huge effect on the public oppinion. Sadly, it is the few cases of stupid and unenlightened use, at "rave parties", for example, that are responsible for the bad public image of meditational and intense self-exploration tools.
Additionally, you'll get a completely different opinion of that "inebriated and confused state of mind" once you actually read real reports of a huge experience.

yeah but this isn't the only forum where discussions can go off topic... this is a nice example for a discussion that started with some obscure windows stuff and is now about psychedelics
Posted by MoX on 07:24:00 05-10-2002
fsvara: As far as I know, drugs affect your thinking by 'shutting down' functions of your brain. I just can't get how you can learn about the way we think or explore yourself by passing out your brain.
And, you can meditate without drugs, maybe even better.
[addsig]
Posted by sacah on 18:47:00 05-10-2002
Its called ASM programming
Posted by KaGez on 21:15:00 05-10-2002
/me agrees with mox too
but, I've got one thing for those of you who don't know it:
it's scientifically prooved that "meditating" = "sleeping". I've read that in PM (some german magazine, quite good). The brain's state is _exectly_ the same as if you were sleeping.
That's all
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 21:50:00 05-10-2002
haha - is that true? How lame are all these meditating people then...
Perhaps they should go to bed earlier...
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 23:28:00 05-10-2002
MoX:
since you live in germany I think you know the mag "P.M.", or not? It was written in that quite some time ago.
I don't wanna waste my time with sleeping!
[addsig]
Posted by sacah on 16:54:00 05-11-2002
Its the same as deep sleep that many ppl dont actually reach each night they sleep, whereas meditation is taught so they reach that state much faster.
Posted by KaGez on 23:52:00 05-11-2002
ok, maybe it can be useful from that viewpoint but, since I can sleep, I don't need it too much
[addsig]
Posted by MoX on 02:23:00 05-12-2002
KaGez: Yeah, I know PM and I read it regularly some years ago. It appeared to me as if it got worse since that time, though I'm not sure.
[addsig]
Posted by KaGez on 11:19:00 05-12-2002
yeah, it got bad for quite a while, but now it's ok again imho
[addsig]
Posted by fsvara on 06:09:00 05-13-2002
moxx - no, they don't "work" by shutting down parts of the brain. the exact way in which drugs work is known in _very_ few cases only. for most substances, scientists have no clue...
THC is known to be an antagonist to the "cannabinoid"-receptor (like some chemicals in chocolate, though they do so in a much weaker way), to which the natural antagonist is "Anandamide", but nobody really knows what exactly Anandamide does...
Nobody knows how LSD, MDMA, Salvinorin A, just to name a few, work.
peter - nice if you can achieve such a state by meditation... but i would think of such a deep state of meditation as practically unreachable for a "normal" person that doesn't dedicate its life to it...
If you are interested in the matter, I'd suggest Leary's and Huxley's writings...
Posted by MoX on 08:39:00 05-13-2002
I simply won't use drugs for the fact that they are unhealthy and would probably affect (damage) my brain long term. My life is good enough when I'm not high and the things it lacks won't be made up by drugs.
Do your thing, take your drugs. I won't tell the police.
