As you know, -KEN- got really foolish after we made sacah the admin of the windows forum. OK, he also was before, but now he tries to start to argue with ppls, especially me, because he probably thinks that I've made sacah the admin. I just deleted that damned post in the bubbling thingy. It was something like that he loves it to argue with me and shit.
Anyways, I think we should maybe start cleaning up a bit and make some _rules_. IMO this is what the YPN _really_ misses. There are absolutely no rules atm, at least they are nowhere where the users could look at them. I think we should assemble a rules list, maybe not too much, but that consists of the basic manners how you have to act inside a community and stuff.
I'm not talking about disallowing everything. I'm just talking about some basic rules to make the YPN a better community, where also relations between peoples are kept up. If we go on like letting them do everything the YPN will probably not be such a good place for too long. This is especially because the community is constantly growing.
And, when we apply some rules, we should also delete all these non-informative posts that also nobody is interested in, because nobody needs them and they're just getting useless and lie around on the server and eat performance/space.
ops are welcome

Yeah, I've also thought of assembling those unwritten rules we have anyway. It's a lot clearer when it's pinned down.

What posts are you referring to? That bubbling cauldron post, I can agree, was just stupid. But I wouldn't rate topics after usefulness, this is after all a forum for free discussions.

-KEN- now starts bitchin around about that stuff and asks me why I deleted that shit and stuff (in PMs). I think getting the rules done for now has highest priorities.
Else, if we delete those posts it looks like we'd have no reasons. And that lollipops if you ask me

I don't think that's really the case. Everyone who read that post knows that it was full of shit. -KEN- knows it too, he's just bitching. Just because there are no written rules, he can't tell you what to delete and what not.
Posted by KaGez on 17:19:00 04-24-2002
true, but they do.
anyways, maybe we can get rid of it with "that falls under 'no manners'", but in other cases it would be great to have rules.... I don't have a exact example now, but I think that the communications between all the members should be kept in a good mood, and not like it is between -KEN- and me now... ok, maybe some like abhi stand it, but I'm sure that there will be many of em dropping out if the board gets full of some random useless stuff

i don't think rules are necessary. the rules that apply here are just basic netiquette and everybody who comes here should be at least a little familiar with "good manner" on the net

if you think those posts need to be deleted, do so. but i really think we should delete as little as possible, that is, deleting nothing would be best but as we'd all hate to see this forum become a trolling ground like slashdot that'll need a similar mod system just to make a normal conversation possible, better stop the trolls before it is too late...

but if we delete somethng we must justify it. You can't just delete it and get away like that in most cases.
I think we will also have it a lot easier to administrate the whole forum shit with rules. We then don't have to break our heads if we have to delete it or not (I'm in that situation sometimes, you know ). Rules will greatly help us in this appartment...

do we?

I do think that written rules won't hurt. Or at least some general guidelines.

But I also agree with svara; if we delete something, the reason should be obvious enough to not need a motivation. I haven't heard anyone but -KEN- complaining about the deletion.

sure we can just delete the stuff without explaining, but I still think that it will look like abusing the admin powers you have if you do so.
We don't have to rightify ourselves for deleting things, but we could also keep the air in the forum much better if we have rules that peoples should read/understand. For example these flame wars about UNI*/Windows or such. We are not here to discuss that, tou know We're here to program.
Anyways, as I said above, these rules could keep the ari clean in the forum pretty often if you ask me.

And that from you, Kagez! *G*
Well, I don't think these flame wars are bad, as long as it doesn't get too agressive, it's good fun

If you delete something, it should be obvious to everyone but the complete assholes that you're not abusing your powers.

Concerning the complete assholes, they wouldn't stop whining if we'd have written rules, instead they'd accuse us for writing bigot rules or something to that effect.

However, we should write down some guidelines.

we should at _least_ write down the manners

what about:

YPN Rules
=========

1. Admins are right. Always.
2. Use common sense.
3. Don't be stupid.

that'd be a good start wouldn't it?
Posted by KaGez on 22:21:00 04-28-2002
oh, how creative :/
I'd say we should make some more "fair" rules we shouldn't act like gods or something. We should keep the level of the members and us the same if you ask me. Else you'd get a gap between those 2 "components"

now, as you've maybe seen, we have trouble again... why the heck should we set up a CGI::IRC for just one guy? why do I have to get flamed for saying "no"?! I don't get this, and I am also sick of this. Therefore I'd like 2 things:
1) we set up some rules about what you may post and what not. And maybe _how_ you have to post....
2) I want you guys to also be a bit more active in the forum. This time it was mostly because I was the first one, and I'm sure that you guys'd have answered the same as I did...

I think with these 2 we could get it a lot better on the board.

There has been talk about a CGI:IRC already. I was in need of such a thing when my school blocked all ports except 80. It was hard to find existing, usable mirrors of it, but with some research, we could get a list of them and link them from here.

Right now I don't have the problem with blocked ports, school doesn't block anything anymore. However, there are people who might be in need of it.

Yes, we all know that Mintegra does behave like a jerk at times. I don't think we should over-react though.

1) You may post anything. Requests for CGI:IRC are far from offending.

_How_ you may post: you may not call people names ("dumbass", "idiot", "fucking bitch") or offend them personally. People must get more than one chance though (and stuff like "you act like an idiot" should be allowed, if there is adequate explanation).

It's important that we have quite loose, but easy to get rules. Mostly an emphasize on netiquette, nothing else. Of course, we should try to make people post in the right forum, but there is no need of intolerance on that point.

2) I actually replied before you, and I was positive to his suggestion. So no, I wouldn't have replied the same way. However, I realized that it'd be far better to just link to sites that already have CGI:IRC up, as it might not make as much use on our website.

I'm doing the best I can on the forum... :/

1) Peter:
I wasn't talking exactly with you, it was a note for all, so please do not feel offended or anything.

2) I have seen quite some members on the YPN before (which left pretty fast tho) that didn't seem to know about that netiquette.
Anyways, are you supposed to use IRC in school? I never heard of a school where you may use IRC (I dunno if it is allowed in peter's school tho).
I agree about that "you may post anything" (it was a mistake in the post above, sorry. wanted to say something else, but nm ). But you shouldn't get aggressive or anything if you don't get on the server what you want, as Mintegra did. They simply don't seem to get that this server doesn't belong to us, and that we can't just put everything on this server. I think that _if_ they want something on the server they should contact on of the persons first who has access to the server and ask if it may be possible. Then it still wouldn't be too late to make a post on the board. I just think that you should come up with such stuff on a board if you've not even asked about it. I mean, if it is not possible it isn't, and there simply _is_ nothing to discuss about it.
