Are there any 8086 variants of Linux, working on 80286 computers with just 1MB of memory?

well, i heard there was some backport being done...
but it certainly isn't in the vanilla kernel, and i also heard there were so big tree differences that it couldn't really be synced with the linux kernel, and you can't do much with it.
I don't know if that's true. Just search on google.

Definitly not. Linux requires a 386+ processor and has support in optimization for various CPUs (MMX,Pentium Pro,AMD K5/6, 486/586 etc). 1 MB of ram will not be enough.
I think the minimal ram I EVER heard of was
4 MB (the guy used 486DX/4MB Linux box as a router and firewall, he was pretty happy as he had downloads like 60 kBytes/sec or something (German DSL -> T-DSL)). Remember that Linux does not mean graphical environment (that's why he could perfectly use his Linux box as router).
Have a nice time!

The reason why Linux wont work on a CPU older than 386 is that the Linux kernel is pure 32 bit.
fsvara, KaGez, you should know that as the Linux-gurus you are :P

So you call Window$ Palm Edition a Window$ 95+ too?? Man, you should think of whether PalmLinux is Linux or just a Pseudo-Linux! We are talking of Linux.
No PalmLinux will work on a 8086. Palms have a very different architecture.
I heard of some IA64 running Linux lately but NEVER a 16bit-processor. Btw IA64 boxes are used nearly for science only.
Have a nice day.
